Phillies’ bid for repeat falls short against Yanks

NEW YORK (AP)—One look from the dugout at the celebration on the field was all the incentive the Philadelphia Phillies needed for next year.

“We want that trophy back,” Brad Lidge(notes) said.

The defending champions fell two wins short in their bid to become the first NL team in 33 years to win consecutive World Series titles. Their quest ended with a 7-3 loss to the New York Yankees in Game 6 on Wednesday night.

While the Yankees were soaking in champagne, the Phillies already were looking ahead to 2010. Considering all their key starters are under contract and most of their star players are 30 years old or younger, the future is bright. November baseball could become a fixture in Philadelphia.

“I told them that I loved the way they played, and we definitely were fighters and we never quit,” Manuel said. “When you play in the World Series, somebody is going home. I’m proud to have the guys on our team with the makeup and the fight that they have, determination. We’ll be back.”

Chase Utley(notes) tied Reggie Jackson’s record for homers in a Series with five, and Cliff Lee(notes) earned two wins. But the Phillies couldn’t overcome poor performances by three players who played crucial roles in helping them win the franchise’s second championship in 2008. Cole Hamels(notes) was MVP of the World Series last year against Tampa Bay. Lidge got two saves vs. the Rays and Ryan Howard(notes) had three homers and six RBIs.

None of them will have fond memories of this one.

The Phillies gave Hamels a 3-0 lead in the pivotal Game 3. But after tossing three scoreless innings, the temperamental lefty fell apart. He allowed five runs over 4 1-3 innings in an 8-5 loss that gave New York a 2-1 lead.

Lidge, who led the majors with 11 blown saves in the regular season, made one appearance against the Yankees. He entered with the score tied in the ninth inning in Game 4. After retiring the first two batters, Lidge gave up three runs in a 7-4 loss. He hadn’t allowed a postseason run in five prior appearances.

Howard, the MVP of the NL championship series against Los Angeles, set a record with 13 strikeouts in a World Series. Willie Wilson fanned 12 times for Kansas City against Philadelphia in 1980.

Howard hit a two-run homer Wednesday night. But the All-Star first baseman finished with a .174 batting average (4 for 23), one homer and three RBIs.

“I feel cool,” Howard said. “The only thing I can do now is go home and relax and come back for spring training.”

The defending champs cruised to their third straight NL East title with 93 wins and breezed through the first two rounds of the playoffs, beating Colorado in four games in the division series and the Dodgers in five in the NLCS.

Still, the Phillies were 2 to 1 underdogs against the Yankees, who had 103 regular-season victories. The Vegas oddsmakers had it right all the way. No one was going to deny the best team that money can buy—New York’s payroll was $201 million on opening day—its 27th title.

Howard, Hamels and Lidge weren’t the only problems for the Phillies. A potent offense that led the league in runs went into a collective slump at the worst time. Jimmy Rollins(notes) (.217), Shane Victorino(notes) (.182), Pedro Feliz(notes) (.174) and Ben Francisco(notes) (.000) couldn’t produce at the plate.

“They were the best team in the Series,” Rollins said.

Lee was masterful on the mound in Game 1 and helped the Phillies avoid elimination with a strong outing Monday night. Pedro Martinez(notes) was superb in a 3-1 loss in Game 2, but the wily 38-year-old right-hander failed to match that effort his second time out Wednesday night. The rest of the pitching staff was shaky.

Defensively, a mistake by Victorino proved costly in the final game. The Gold Glove center fielder misplayed Derek Jeter’s(notes) line drive into a single with one out in the bottom of the third. Hideki Matsui(notes) then ripped a two-out, two-run single to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.

The Phillies were trying to become the first repeat champion from the NL since the Cincinnati Reds did it in 1976. The Yankees were the last team to capture consecutive titles when they won three in a row from 1998-2000.

“We’re going to be a better team next year,” Manuel said.

the yankees only won the series because of the umpires. they gave them the win with all their bad calls. you might as well say the third game was handed to them.

I an tired of hearing "the best team money can buy"! Money does not make a player great and it has been proven that maoney does not buy a championship. It has been 9 years since the Yankees last won a World Series despite the high payroll. If an owner wants to spend his money on a player thats his perogative. Ask any player in the majors and see where they dream of playing. Not for the money but for the chance to play on a team that is legendary and fights year aftert year to maintain its level of prestige. Many owners just want to make whatever profit they can and minimize what they spend. Thats their choice.

Salary cap and then parity in MLB. Yankees won't win without paying a huge luxury tax. 200 million dollar payroll and buying the best players in the league and it still took 5 years to win one...LOL...back slap yourselves to the poorhouse, delusional Yankee fans...

continuing on from my post in 489,

Phils will not land Halladay if they cannot pay him what he wants. It would be dumb for them to trade all that talent for a pitcher they perhaps think that they may not be able to sign since he'll be a free agent at the end of 2010. And considering that Toronto was in a better position to make demands at the Trade Deadline this past season to get more for him, I still don't think that Philly has enough to offer while the Yankees might. So in a nutshell, I will not make a bold prediction and rather would leave it as Remains To Be Seen.

Repeat.....The Yankees will make it back to the Series in '10. Whether they win remains to be seen and is dependent upon how they behave in offseason 2009-10. Like I said earlier, obtain a 4th legitimate playoff starter so that both the Joba Rules and the 3 day rest risk gets put to bed.

    Good luck!

    486 Mikey D,

You are correct. The NL Pitching for the msot part but not all Poor. If it was, then Cliff Lee, despite al lthe success he had vs. NYY, would have lost and as a result, the World Series would be 2 games shorter than it ended up being....Yankees would have swept! But oh well, far be it for morons to understand. And to this point, I was just saying that Cliff Lee's position in this current Yankees Rotation would ahve been as a 1 or 2 starter but not backend, that's for sure!

@ 486...sunil, I just think the comment by the one person that the National League is poor is a a bit over the top. The pitching by the Phillies in this series should not be used as the determining factor for how good or bad the pitching in the NL is. Certainly the Phillies had their struggles but there are plenty of NL pitchers that could transition to the AL and dominate.

It will be interesting to see what the Phils do in the offseason. Toronto will (or already does have) a new GM, a smarter GM. The Phillies still have the prospects. Can you see this rotation next year for the Phils? Halladay, Lee, Hamels (from 2008 not 2009) Happ, Blanton.....pretty scary!

Yanks will definitely benefit from this year in regards to their pitching. Their young guys (Hughes, Chamberlain, Coke, etc.) have gained some experience and will definitely come back next year stronger than this year.

Repeat.....not yet Sunil....but they certainly have a great shot. I can definitely see them and the Phils in the fall classic again in 2010....and why not...ratings were the best they have been since 2004.

    @ 483 Mikey D,

Seriously, Cliff Lee would be a 1 or at max a 2 starter for the NYY and it would look something like this if Lee was traded to the Yankees instead: CC, Lee, Burnett, Pettite, Wang/Joba/Aceves. A Great rotation nevertheless. Girardi made good use of Aceves for the most part out of the pen but I can seriously see him in the rotation in the future as opposed to Wang or Joba. For Wang's future, it all really depends on how he heals from his current injury. If he heals really well, then ofcourse I'd have him 3 over Burnett in a hearbeat considering he's won 19 games twice already for us. Just imagine how sweet it'd be to have potential 19 game winners 1-3 in your SP Rotation? Can you say "Repeat"?

As a Yankee fan I'm happy to see Matsu get the MVP. We started an MVP chant in the bar during his last at-bat but I thought we were just being over exuberant. In my mind I thought Mo would've gotten the nod, but I'm sure it'll be long forgotten when he gets inducted.

Yesterday I wrote on here that Howard and Utley would hit homers in a 7-3 loss (or did I write 7-4). Well, almost got it right. Phils gave us a good series and I know if their pitching and bullpen were a little stronger this series goes 7 games.

    @ 480 MikeyD,

Your points of view are truly respectable but I just have this to say: A respectable person or athlete will and should keep his desires for his team to succeed TO HIMSELF/HERSELF as opposed to making a public AZZ CLOWN out of himself/herself. While in reality Jimmy Rollins might be a classy fun-loving respectable individual, for the sake of this one incident he wasn't. When one goes on the media airwaves with the words like Rollins did, that is perception, which then transforms into reality.

Nevertheless, great post MikeyD, keep it comin'!

@482....dsnyder100872, yes the Phillies pitching struggled, but lets not say the National League is poor. I think there are more than a dozen pitchers the Yankees wouldn't mind having from the NL for the back end of their rotation. Cliff Lee being one of them.

OK, so I'm a Phillies fan. A few observations:
    • Jeter should have gotten the MVP - he played every game.
    • I'm curious which team the Mets fans were cheering for. Are they happy now? Or did they want to see the Yankees lose (not necessarily the Phillies to win).
    • And finally, I hate to say this, but: Big Daddy grabbed the Phillies by the ear, bent them over his knee, and gave them a spanking. OUCH!

    This sucks…

@474...sunil, it was a stupid comment on Rollins' part. I think all of Philly thought he needs to stop with the predictions and proclamations before it bites him.....and it did. But it was all in fun. Even Jeter said that because he knows Jimmy from the WBC. Let's not go to the extent you are going and say Rollins has no class. I think majority of players around the league would agree that Rollins is one of the classiest guys in the game. He plays hard and likes to have fun. Thats all he was doing when he answered Leno's question. Him and Jeter are probably the top two SS's in the league and equally classy.

    478 omorales 36,

That was a very respectable, one of the few handful coming from Philly Nation. Good luck with the Eagles-Cowboys game Sunday night. It should be a good matchup and a lot closer than how last season's game in the final week ended.

It would be good to see a reatch again next year and maybe the Phils can improve but more importantly, Rollins needs to SHUT UP. I'm sorry but he's annoying more than Philly Nation Fans are. :-|

To all of the whining Philly fans. Give the Yankees the respect they deserve. I'm a die hard Philly fan, but all of the senseless whining has gotten annoying. You can buy all of the players you like, but they have to gell as a team. That's what the Phillies have done and look how far it has gotten them, back-to-back WS Appearances, one being a WS Championship. The Yankees have brought in numerous player to help them win the WS, but it took them nine years to put the right group together, and they will only be getting tougher going into next year. They have the right nucleus and a pitching staff that will be solid for a few years. Expect them to be back in the WS next year maybe. As for our Phightn Phils, they have some major decisions to make.

Brett Myers and Pedro Feliz are free agents. And then there is our minor league quartet of players looking to come up ( Kyle Drabek, Joe Savery, Domonic Brown and Michael Taylor) NO doubt they will be ready at some point next year. Then there is the bullpen, with eyre possibly retiring and Myers leaving, there will be a void. The offseason rest for Madson should do him some good, same for Lidge. The future is bright for this bunch, but that future is about a three year window, notice Werth, Utley, Howard, Ibanez and Hamels are all due for FA three years from now. GO Phils and Eagles.

@ 475...yankstorm, you're right. I meant to say that. Yanks had the better record and home field was theirs regardless. I just think moving forward you dont want to have a guy from a team like the Pirates or the Royals being perhaps the final out in a win or lose situation in the All Star game and that determines home field. Guys from those teams are usually only there because at least one player from every team needs to be there. That guy likely doesnt care either way because he knows his team isnt making the playoffs come July when they are already 25 games below 500. They have no incentive to perform in that situation. I guess you can counter and say it is up to the manager of each team (Girardi and Manuel next year) to make the right decision too in that situation and determine if the guy is half a$$ing it. I dont know? It just seems like such a bad way to determine home field. Let the records determine that.
