Howard breaks record for strikeouts in a Series

NEW YORK (AP)—Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard(notes) struck out swinging against Yankees reliever Damaso Marte(notes) in the eighth inning Wednesday night, setting a record with his 13th strikeout of the World Series.

Howard, who was MVP of the Phillies’ NL championship series victory over Los Angeles, passed Willie Wilson’s old mark. Wilson struck out 12 times for Kansas City against Philadelphia in 1980.

Howard went 2 for 5 in the opener, but got two hits the rest of the Series, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning in Game 6. He fanned four times in Game 2 and three times in Game 3.

Howard has been a hack for years and has been a hinderance to the Phillies since 07. Clearly Fielder and Albert are the best 1b's in baseball and all other players are fighting for a distant 3rd. The strikeouts are indicative of flaws in his swing. He will quickly become another Adam Dunn; lots of power but strikes out too often to be useful.

Like I said when the Anaheim series started. Yankees in 6 over Anaheim, then Yankees in 6 over the Phillies! Go Yanks! See ya tomorrow at the Parade! Oh, and someone please tell JRoll he's welcome to come watch.

Both franchises suck. The Yankees/Phillies fans are all classless. Phillies fans actually KILLED another Phillies fan and Yankees fans swear they have been around to see all 27 championships. Your loyalty means absolutely nothing, you are simply rooting on the right team at the right team, were you this happy last year, no. So the team changed but you are still idiots.

While we are talking about strikeouts, consider that in his entire career Joe Dimaggio hit 361 home runs and struck out just 369 times.

The only other player close is Yogi Berra, who had 387 HR and 414 Ks. I had the pleasure of mentioning this stat to Dimaggio in 1983. He was thrilled. He didn't care that his lifetime batting average was .315 in Yankee Stadium and .339 on the road, he just said that he wished he had been left-handed.

Has Ryan Howard reached 369 strikeouts yet. He's a good guy, but for a cleanup hitter this performance was a little ridiculous. Agree? Disagree?

First I feel bad for those kids. Ryan Howard is a star player in the league, who had a bad series. Look at your 180 mil 1B who hit about 130 in the series.
You are a true Yankme fan who rather root for cheaters like Aroid and Petit, was that a syringe I saw in Petits ass or Clemens .
Aroid is kissing his Avatar right know, probably blowing it since Kate bailed on him for Jeter.

Ryan Howard is not a bad player, and slumps can happen to anyone. At least, he did hit one monster shot in the series. It might be a case of too little too late, but he did his best. No member of the Phillies needs to hang their head. They played well. Maybe they did not play as good as last year, but that's life.

There is always next year which is what the fans of all the other teams have now.

I realize now how the Yankthese got all those championships. They just go out every year and buy the best players because they have more money then any other team. Babe Ruth is playing great for Boston? Ok lets go buy his contract out. CC is pitching great for Milwaukee? Ok lets go buy him out. A-Rod is the best hitter in baseball? Ok lets go buy him out. Just throw ungodly amounts of money at the best players. What small market team can compete with that? Is baseball fair then if one team can do that and others cannot afford too? I think not! We definitely need a salary cap in baseball to level the playing field.

Keep swinging and missing fatso. Maybe the breeze from your bat will knock over your overrated shortstop and finally shut his big mouth.

I do have some advice for Howard...use some of chase utleys hair gel instead of pine tar on your bat---you'll get a better grip.

Ryan will learn from the experience and move forward next year!
Don't forget, he's still one hell of a hitter!
    Go Ryan!
    Go Phillies in 2010!!

P.S. I'm sure Yankee fans remember the name Babe Ruth, he struck out many, many times too!
