White Sox buy out Jermaine Dye
CHICAGO (AP)—The Chicago White Sox have declined the mutual option on veteran right fielder and former World Series MVP Jermaine Dye(notes), clearing the way for him to become a free agent.
Dye will get a buyout of $950,000 instead of $12 million he could have gotten in salary next season.
Dye, the World Series MVP in 2005 for the White Sox, signed a two-year, $22 million extension late in the 2007 season. This year, the 35-year-old Dye batted .250 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI in 141 games.
Dye has also played with the Braves, Royals and Athletics. In 14 major league seasons, he has batted .274 with 325 homers and 1,072 RBIs. In five seasons with the White Sox, he batted .278 with 164 homers and 461 RBI.

Secondly, I believe that there is a fairly good chance that he will return to the Southside for 2010. Of course he will test the open market but after he does so, I wouldn't be shocked to see Kenny re-sign him to an incentive laden contract. And if he doesn't return, well, that's just the way things go sometimes, IN KENNY WE TRUST!
Thirdly, of course it would suck to see him in a scrubs uniform playing in the urinal next year but it really doesnt matter. The scrubs could sign every single free agent out there, they still won't make the playoffs next year.
And fourth and finally, to poster #53, "who cares"? Apparently, you do since you took the time to click on this link, read the article and write a response. Thanks for letting us all know that you "don't care" by going out of your way to tell us that you don't care. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I know 12 million is a lot of money. But Jermaine? Really? #23?
What is it with Chicago teams trading their best away?
We're sure to regret it next year.
Whatever happened to that Swisher kid? How much did he cost us to get? How much did he cost us by making our competition better when we traded him?
With Dye, it's about both sides. Is he worth 12 million in performance for the Sox? Is he worth 12 million not to watch him make some other team that much stronger? I'm guessing the math should really go something like, is he worth 9 million as a White Sox & 2 million not to have to face him & one million not to risk him being a factor in another team to let some competitor really get their rhythm & dominate thanks to his filling an essential spot on their roster.
Though, admittedly, I don't understand why AJ isn't paid MUCH more. Looking at his salary, there are some fundamental things that I'm just not getting about how it all works.
Just please don't let him become a Tiger, a Twin or a ...Cub... If he leads the Cubs to a pennant...
Can't we trade Ken Williams?

Texas might be an interesting place for Dye to DH, than you have Boston who loves right handed sluggers.
Should be a good offseason with some fun moves for all.
