Cal played SHORT STOP - the hardest and most important defensive position BY FAR!!! He had the best arm- most accurate and strongest and one year he made only THREE errors the entire year!! That defensive record will NEVER be broken!! Oh, and besides great perfect defence at the hardest position. He was ALSO the most clutch hitter in the game even with no protection in the lineup after Eddie Murray left. Any hitter that is better played first base or right field. Cal is by far the best all around everyday player. If you can draft an athlete at 17 yrs old who will from 18 to 38 play 2600 + consecutive games at shortstop, and play the best defense with the best arm and be the best offensive player at the position and start 15+ str8 all star games- you would draft him number 1 in a blink!! Cal is so far better than any baseball player of the generation. And he didn't need Steroids! He did it the Ripken way!! Hard work everyday!

#23: Wow, do you not know your baseball history. From the 1960's through the 80's, the Orioles were one of, if not the most successful franchises in all of sports. True, Ripken was never in a HR chase like McGwire/Sosa were, but 431 career HR's for a shortstop is nothing to scoff at.

Comparing two guys from two different generations has me thinking. If you idiots on here are getting so worked up over the fact that Ripken and Gherig (career shortened athlete) are both hero's to both generations of fans. What all you knuckleheads fail to realize is that both men played at times when there were differences in athletes. These guys faced different expectations. The Orioles with the exception of Ripken's rookie season were pretty much what they are now. Laughing stocks there was really no pressure on Ripken to do anything but, show up. Not to take anything away from him but, did you see him in any homerun chases? Did you see him playing in adversity of NYC for his entire career? To #18: First, Gehrig was an incredible player. To those of us who are historians of the game, his .340 average, 493 homers, and 1995 RBIs are numbers that look impossibly exaggerated. Ditto Babe Ruth (How on earth can John Sterling casually bandy about terms like "Giambino" or "Bamtino"? Doesn't he realize that such inane comparisons are so far off the mark as to be ludicrous? Maybe the Os DID screw up and not trade him for prospects, but to suggest such a thing in Baltimore is like walking into the Vatican and speaking ill of the Pope.
