Papelbon, Ramirez, Delcarmen agree with Red Sox

BOSTON (AP)—The Red Sox and closer Jonathan Papelbon(notes) agreed Tuesday to a $9.35 million, one-year contract, the highest salary for a reliever with four years of major league service.

Boston also agreed to one-year deals with relievers Ramon Ramirez(notes) ($1,155,000) and Manny Delcarmen(notes) ($905,000), leaving outfielder Jeremy Hermida(notes) as the lone Red Sox player remaining in arbitration.

Papelbon’s salary surpassed Mariano Rivera’s(notes) $7.25 million contract for relievers with four years of service time. Papelbon would earn an extra $50,000 if he finishes 60 games.

He also avoided arbitration last year by agreeing to a $6.25 million base salary, and earned an extra $50,000 for making the AL All-Star team. His new agreement was reached after agents Sam and Seth Levinson asked for $10.25 million in arbitration and the club offered $8.45 million.

Papelbon had a 1.85 ERA with 38 saves in 41 opportunities and a 1-1 record last season but struggled more than in previous seasons. In the final game of the Los Angeles Angels’ three-game playoff sweep, Papelbon allowed three runs in the ninth inning and the Red Sox lost 7-6. Until then, he had thrown a record 26 scoreless innings to start his postseason career.

Since becoming Boston’s closer in 2006, Papelbon has a 1.74 ERA with 151 saves in 168 opportunities and an 11-10 record. In his career, which began in 2005 with 14 relief appearances and three starts, he has 346 strikeouts and 77 walks in 298 innings. But last season he issued 24 walks after allowing just eight in 2008.

Ramirez was 7-4 with a 2.84 ERA in 70 relief appearances last year, and Delcarmen was 5-2 with a 4.53 ERA in 64 appearances. Delcarmen would earn a $15,000 bonus if he pitches in 65 games.

Replicans are gay. You hear what they are charging for a speaker at the tea party? About $100,000 per ticket. I dont know why you republicans are trying to be democratic, trying to steal a page outta our book, but democrates never charged 100k at the tea party.

Huge Red Sox fan. Keep the nation stirring in California. Very frustrated with Paps though. I'm ok with him signing one year deals until Mariano retires and he goes there, thats fine. I just wish he could learn to keep his mouth shut and discover that you can do more with your arm than your mouth. He's a great pitcher, with the potential to be a hall of famer, but without the right attitude and direction, he will amount to Brad Lidge. Maybe its Tito's fault, but Papelbon is a grown man and should hold himself responsible for his actions/words and do what every player is in the pros to do. Make tons of money and win championships.

Colt**** you make valid factual points and good arguments. Clearly a sports fan but your abit bias when you start talking about PMD and A-ROD. You being a self declared red sox fan wants to point fingers and blame to arod that actually did admit to use and how bad that is. Dont think for a minute there arnt red sox players that havent juiced. Sorry David ortiz cant admit his wrong(doesnt know what he took...b.s!). I personally think more highly of players that have admitted it. Like there is no question mcguire or bonds didnt juice. The only difference is one has admitted it and one hasnt. You do you have more respect for? If your going to post and keep your credibility in check then you really shouldnt be biased.

I'm glad the Red Sox signed Papelbon, Delcarmen and Ramirez. All are effective in spots and all are not effective EVERY time out and then enhance an already great pitching staff. Ditto Bard and Okajima. The Red Sox may not win the pennant but they will be very good. I would keep Lowell who is still a good fielder and a clutch hitter. He would be great insurance for Beltre and Ortiz; in fact I'd platoon Lowell and Ortiz if Ortiz can no longer hit lefties. Why get rid of him if you're going to pay his salary and lose his productivity? He's still too valuable to just let go for nothing in return. I think Jason Bay will regret leaving this team.

Alright I have to chime in here...

    First...Real R. Shut up. You can't even spell right so your points are invalid at the get go. Also your comment of, and I quote;

**"i see the yankees winning next year playing the last game of the world series in the 9 inning against the redsox papablon giiven up a home run with 2 outs ballgame wait till next year.real.r." **

If you were an actul baseball fan and not a Yankees wannabe fan you'd know that the Red Sox and Yankees can never face one another in the World Series because not only are they in the same League, they are also in the same divison. You're an idiot. World Series is the Best of the AL vs. Best of the NL. It's not the Top two teams in the AL East. But I digress...

I am a Red Sox fan, always have been and always will be. However, I do have to agree that Papelbon will never be a Mariano Rivera. They are vastly different pitchers with vastly different styles. You can only compare them in position. Rivera has offspeed and finesse. Papelbon is just heat and overpowering. As we saw this season when he wasn't using his 99-101 mph fastball he was giving up walks and hits. That can only last how long? I mean yes of course there is potential for him to mature and venture with his offspeed, heck he'd be twice as good with a good slider. I hate the Yankees with a passion but you cannot compare these two, Rivera has been in the league twice as long as Paplebon. It's just not realistic to think these two are the same. It's comparing a Granny Smith Apple with a Red Delicious Apple...Generally similar but vastly different.

Arty Lunch...when has Papelbon tested positive for PMDs? I think you meant A-Rod who tested positive AND admitted it. Try again.

Steely McBeam...We appreciate the thanks. In 1775 the nation called Massachusetts reckless and upstarts in the battle of Lexington and Concord...A year later the Nation declared independence. As we all shoudl know Change can happen both ways. Epic Win for the Republicans!

I love the posts that say Papelbon will never be a Rivera. The question is what other reliever is and the 2nd question is how do you know? How olds Papelbon? I will say I'm not a big Papelbon fan but if he can throw another offspeed pitch for strikes then this guy "could"(remember what I just said-the operative word being could) be another Mariano. Papelbon has the makeup of a great closer but without that 2nd pitch he'll always be prone to fastball hitters who are just sitting on his stuff.

    Pete,

Though I am neither a Yankee fan nor a registered voter in NY, I echo your sentiment that the old stadium should be maintained. But trying to sell people on the concept that the old stadium is just as much a part of our history as the Alamo or the USS Arizona far exceeds the boundaries of insanity. How can anyone in their right mind try to equate a baseball stadium (albeit a historic one as it relates to baseball) to places where men died in combat? Since you mention the Arizona, let's talk about that....are you aware that 1,102 US servicemen are entombed in the Arizona (which was sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 for those who do not know)? So, let me get this right....a stadium where baseball games were played by famous players is JUST AS IMPORTANT as a memorial to those who died in service to our country?

You should probably rethink your position.
