Rays trade 2B Iwamura to Pirates

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)—The budget-conscious Tampa Bay Rays saved some money and added some promising bullpen help Tuesday night when they traded infielder Akinori Iwamura(notes) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for right-hander Jesse Chavez(notes).

The Rays held a $4.85 million option on Iwamura for next season, but did not intend to pick it up because of the depth they have at second base.

“We’ve got areas we really need to try to address,” Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said, specifically mentioning the bullpen and catcher as priorities this offseason.

Iwamura hit .290 with one homer and 22 RBIs in 69 games during the final season of a $7.7 million, three-year contract he signed after playing for the Yakalt Swallows in Japan. He signed with the Rays as a free agent in December 2006.

The 30-year-old missed 81 games this season after sustaining partial tears of the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee. Once the Rays determined they were not going to pick up his option for 2010, Friedman listened to offers for a trade.

“Pittsburgh has been all over us for about a month,” Friedman said.

Chavez led Pittsburgh and all major league rookies with 73 appearances in 2009, going 1-4 with a 4.01 ERA in 67 1-3 innings. He was taken in the 42nd round in 2002 by Texas, and made his major league debut with the Pirates with 15 appearances in 2008.

The Rays believe the 26-year-old has the potential to develop into an outstanding reliever.

“This year was a good year,” Friedman said. “We feel like he has the tools and ability to have an even better year.”

Iwamura was a five-time All-Star and six-time Gold Glove third baseman in Japan. In three seasons in Tampa Bay, he batted .281 with 14 homers, 104 RBIs and 29 stolen bases while playing third base for one year and second for the past two.

His unselfish transition from third to second base in 2008—a move that opened a position for All-Star Evan Longoria(notes)—was one of the keys to Tampa Bay’s transformation from a perennial last-place team into AL champions.

“It is hard to put into words what Aki has meant to the organization,” Friedman said.

The Pirates badly needed a second baseman after trading NL All-Star Freddy Sanchez(notes) to Giants before the trading deadline.

“He is a good athlete with above-average speed and is a tough out with a solid career on-base percentage,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. “Additionally, he played Gold Glove-caliber third base for years in Japan and has made a smooth transition to second base.”

Pittsburgh takes on Iwamura’s option, which the Pirates can pay because their already low payroll was trimmed when they dealt Sanchez, Adam LaRoche(notes), Jack Wilson(notes), Nate McLouth(notes), Njyer Morgan and Eric Hinske(notes) during the season.

Coming off a major league-record 17th consecutive losing season in which they lost 99 games, the Pirates also needed to make a move to at least appease a dwindling fan base that was angered by yet another season of player departures.

Former Dodgers utilityman Delwyn Young(notes) filled in at second base after Sanchez was traded, but struggled defensively and slumped badly at the plate late in the season. The Pirates’ top second base prospect, Chase d’Arnaud, isn’t close to being ready for the majors.

@50, although I agree with your sentiment, your facts are wrong, the Pirates went to the World Series 7 times, but only won 5.

@51 we should get together and go to a Pirates game this year, don't you think? I mean what a better way to show your support for a struggling franchise than to go to the games or if you can't afford to at least watch them on TV. I meanwith all the young players on the team, if the attendance and ratings were up instead of down, that might build morale and help them play better.

#50 you are correct. Having said that this franchise has become one of the laughing stocks of MLB. As long as Bob Nutting owns the team nothing, except the firing of front office personnel, will change. Nutting is only in it for the $. The only hope is for people to stop showing up for games and hope the franchise gets sold to someone who will make less profit and field a team that has a CHANCE to win.

They will NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER BREAK .500 EVER AGAIN!!! Baseball needs to move or contract this franchise which is doing nothing less then KILLING THE SPORT !!!

I'm thinking that the Pirates did OK with this trade: Iwamura is a great ball player. And no, I am not a Rays fan.

Good pickup by the Pirates, just wishing they could have subbed Hill or Dumatrait for Chavez, but what is done , is done.

If Aki is healthy, he is a solid player, good speed, and bat, and will take the Pirates to the next level.
I guess the La roche move to 2b is no longer feasible , huh?

Does anyone remember in 2002 or so when the league voted to eliminate the Minnesota Twins and the Montreal Expos, but couldn't because of legal issues with the Twins? I wonder why they don't try to dissolve the Pirates and the Nationals now. It would give both leagues the same number of teams and get rid of two pitiful franchises. The only problem is that Washington just build their nice new stadium... maybe they can move some other team there.

Man, sorry to see Aki go. He is a class act, always plays hard and came back from an injury early so he could contribute down the stretch run. ( while it lasted ) A solid .280 -.300 hitter with a good OBP and not too many K's. Unlike BJ "Cancer" Upton, he didn't gripe when asked to change positions for the good of the team and became an above average 2nd baseman.

It was a pleasure to watch him play in St Petersburg....I'm hoping Friedman pulls another Garza/ Bartlett trade here instead of a Burrell. So sorry about him going to Pittsburgh. Nice city, I'll be the first one on the plane there if I need a new kidney or liver, but just a god awful baseball town. Good luck Aki...GO RAYS !!!!

I'm heartbroken. I waited a long time this season to watch Aki play. I thought he was gone for sure if he didn't recover from his injury. I knew the Rays wouldn't want to pay extra if he's less than 100%. While Zobrist did a good job while Aki was injured, I believe Aki was great the year before. I wish the Rays management would invest in this team more. It's difficult enough to compete with the Yanks and Red Sox. Maybe keeping the essential members of our team who won us the pennant should be a priority.

I love the Rays, but Burrell is a bust, and now they have to cut bucks because they're stuck with this guy. 2B will be okay for them, but they have got to get rid of Burrell and that big check. Nobody wants him, though. Good luck, Rays. You're in a tough division, but I think you can repeat 2008.
