Phillies pick up Lee’s $9 million option

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Philadelphia Phillies have picked up Cliff Lee’s(notes) $9 million option for 2010.

The team announced the expected move on Friday, two days after losing the World Series to the New York Yankees. Lee’s contract expires after next season, though general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the team is open to signing the star left-hander to a long-term deal.

Lee, 31, was acquired from the Cleveland Indians on July 29 for four minor leaguers, and quickly became Philadelphia’s ace. Lee posted a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts for the Phillies, then went 4-0 with a 1.56 mark in five postseason outings, including 2-0 in the World Series.

Lee might command a deal similar to the seven-year, $161 million contract the Yankees gave C.C. Sabathia(notes).

Lee told MLB.com on Thursday that he’s interested in staying with the Phillies but had not given much thought to his contract.

The Phillies have until Monday to decide whether to pick up a $5 million option on third baseman Pedro Feliz(notes), who batted .266 with 12 homers in 2009, hitting mostly seventh in the lineup.

“He had a solid year for us,” Amaro said. “I like the man personally. He’s a great person, a great teammate, but I also believe in trying to improve and change can be for the better. It doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to, but it’s something that we’ll look into.”

Not picking up Feliz’s option doesn’t prevent the Phillies from re-signing him.

With Lee in the fold next season, the Phillies have $104.5 million committed to 12 players, and are expected to give raises to four salary-arbitration eligible players: Shane Victorino(notes), Joe Blanton(notes), Carlos Ruiz(notes) and Chad Durbin(notes). Amaro suggested that the team’s 2010 payroll will be similar to last season’s, somewhere between $130 million and $140 million.

If the Phillies decline the option on Feliz, they will have eight potential free agents, including Pedro Martinez(notes), Brett Myers(notes), Scott Eyre(notes), Chan Ho Park(notes) and Matt Stairs(notes).

Amaro wouldn’t rule out bringing any of them back. Martinez will be an interesting decision for the Phillies, who have five starters under contract— Lee, Cole Hamels(notes), Blanton, J.A. Happ(notes) and Jamie Moyer(notes)—plus young pitchers such as Kyle Drabek and Kyle Kendrick(notes) waiting for their shot.

Martinez helped his prospects by going 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in nine regular-season starts.

“We’re still assessing what to do on our free agents,” Amaro said.

NOTES: The Phillies announced that Eyre, 37, had surgery to remove “floating bodies” in his left elbow. The left-hander pitched through it in the final month of the regular season and the postseason. Eyre has said he will either pitch for the Phillies or retire. … Closer Brad Lidge(notes) had his right elbow examined by team doctors, who also examined Raul Ibanez’s(notes) troublesome groin and abdomen. Ibanez spent nearly a month on the disabled list earlier this season, and batted .232 in the second half of the season. He may need surgery.

    271. I won't go as far as to say Manuel is a poor manager, he just has short comings that get overlooked due to his success. If he were to read Proverbs he would need to understand a wise man will listen to instruction. His team and individual morale based managing is extremely effective it is what keeps his players playing at a high unselfish level.

However when you stand beside people to a fault and to the destruction of your team morale will fail there as well. He should have switched Werth and Howard or pushed Howard one more rung down and switched Ibanez and Ruiz. This would have motivated Howard not hurt him, given the Phillies a HOT clean up man and avoided many of the missed opportunities. The series was so much closer than it appeared and a few more runs here and there could have changed everything.

    270. He did say Giants fans, but I do agree(with you). Sportsmanship needs to extend into the fanbase as well as the players I believe that ideaology is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

This is really great. I have never saw such great writing's by a gaggle of sorry I'm not going that low. Have they fired Charlie the no managing manager? He lost the series by mismanaging his pitchers. Charlie shouldn't be allowed to buy a ticket to see a game let alone manage a game. He should have went with what got him there., Instead of what he used. The Phillies will be back.

"To all phillies fans, dallas beat the Eagles" ???? Thats like me saying "To all Yankees fans the Giants are worthless and lost again". Both these statements are totally void of logic, and require assumptions that are just as ridiculous.

Ok let me repeat the Yankees have had the highest payroll like the last 8 or 10 years and now have 2 titles. Your logic of buying a World Series makes no sense. If its money your teams are crying about tell your cheap ass owners to market there team better and own there stadium so that they get all the revenue. Haters.....More titles more problems! Hey Phillies fix that pourous middle relief and clone Cliff Lee so you really have a starting rotation...... see you guys next year.

this is my first time on this sight and it is sooo funny. All of you are funny. New York Yankee fans, your team one good for you enjoy it. Why are you on hear argueing one point and then another. You should be happy so why are you still trying to prove yourself. Why is ur confidence still so low. In Philly last year at this time we just partied it was fun. I didn't feel the need to defend the who the what and the where, cause that ruins it. The same team your dogging this year can shut you up and beat you the next so why give them any more reason to smile big about it. From a philadelphia native to NY fans congrats. To the philly fans on this forum. Philly is unique and so are it's fans. In Philly you wouldn't even know they lost cause every where I still see phillies hats and jerseys just as much as I did last year when they won. That is special, that is team support. That is the kind of representing that makes me proud to be from Philly. A Great team comes from it's heart and the heart of people behind it . Philly got alot of heart. And we are always considered the underdog but in history it was always the under dog who became the true heroes. After all isn't that where we started as a country. But we had more heart and purpose. We fought and won from the would be champs england. And reminder philly fans that began here in Philly. We are this nations Daddy. To the philly fans you are the best in the world. Let's just enjoy our league victory and continue supporting all our teams. And again to the Yanks. Great year for you Congrats:)

Special message for all the haters: Wang will return to his 19-wins per season form and Joba will go to the pen where he belongs. Best pitching staff in the majors, hands down. You can just give us the 2010 rings along with the 2009s. Thanks for playing. Come back again soon.

"A Yankees Fan would never be satisfied wearing last years shirt" should you not be posting 2009 over and over then instead of 27, obviously you feel they hold merit and are worth mentioning, were they 27 in a row...no. So therefore at every non repeat season, according to your logic you would need to start over and disregard the rest. Hypocrite. Yankees and Phillies were the same team, each had the 1 game where they decided to not show up offensively Yankees won all the toss ups and the Series. It was not a blow out, a loss and dissapointment, yes. What we wanted or even worth settling for, no. But we are one year removed from a Championship returned to the Series again and gave no reason to doubt we have good shot to get there again, and since it's not the mid 1900's you need to realize YOU just beat the team to beat right now, and you will most likely have to do it again next year if you can hold off everybody else you struggle with.

No Mascots, No Names on the Jerseys. Just 27 World Championships out of 40 tries.

The Phillies had a chance against the Yankees with Richie Ashburn and the Whiz Kids in 1950. Lost 4 straight. Looked more like Cheese Whiz. Had another chance in 2009. Lost 4-2.

Puck the Fillys. And a very special Puck you to the very, very emotional Jazz. Remember under your beloved 2008 shirt, your heart will always remind you of the 2009 World Series and your insane remarks that made you feel stupid and ignorant of the game of Baseball!!

    Guess who said this;

"The Yankees are at a dis-advantage going back to N.Y. with a 3-2 lead in the World Series."

"Matsui cannot speak English." (And Chen Ho Park?)

"They won't pitch around Utley because Howard will make you pay." (Yeah, 13 times KKKKKKKK)

"The Yankees forced A-Rod to play third base."

"Next year the Phillies need to have both right and left handed closers that can each go 3 innings."

"Pedro will be fine he just needs to build stamina."

This is a person to argue with? I left out about 100 other insane statements
