Dodgers’ Padilla shot by instructor in Nicaragua

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP)—Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla(notes) is recovering from a bullet wound in his leg after a target shooting instructor accidentally shot him.

Dr. Eduardo Reguera said Padilla, who signed with the Dodgers in August, didn’t need surgery after spending time at Managua’s Metropolitan Hospital.

Police spokesman Vilma Reyes said Wednesday that Padilla’s pistol apparently jammed during a target shooting session late Tuesday.

Padilla handed the pistol to a shooting instructor, a former police captain, who didn’t realize there was a bullet in the chamber and shot himself in his hand, Padilla’s legal adviser Roberto Calderon told The Associated Press. The bullet also grazed Padilla’s leg.

The account contradicts Padilla’s agent, Adam Katz, who told The Los Angeles Times that it was a “hunting accident.”

Padilla went 4-0 with a 3.20 ERA for the Dodgers the final two months of the regular season. He allowed one run in 7 1-3 innings in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series, but was battered for six runs in three innings in a season-ending loss to the Phillies.

Seems like there is always a controversy with this man during the off-season. Whether it is related to his abuse of alcohol, involvement in vehicle deaths, or shootings. Maybe his contract should stipulate that he spend his off-seasons in the USA so his team can keep an eye on him. Than again, maybe his off-season should be permanent.

Have to love the people here saying this guy should have been shot after a lousy outing. I guess all you Einsteins never had a bad day on your job! Of course, if shooting workers after a bad day caught on we could reduce unemployment.

Never take a gun from another person without checking to see if it is loaded. The NRA taught me that and the US Army re-taught me that.

So, are we to believe that a former police captain did not realize that there was a bullet in the chamber? Anyone with the smallest amount of gun knowledge knows that you are TO ALWAYS ASSUME THE GUN IS LOADED! I would bet this guy probabaly looked straight down the barrel as well.

I can read we will see what the truth is im pretty sure it was not in the article give it a week truth may still come out, started out as one story turning to another truth might come out later im a dodger fan and i am pretty sure he is lying mainly because a supposed instructer knows all guns are loaded all the time. the instructor would tell you the most danger from a gun is the unloaded gun he would never assume a gun was unloaded. ASK ANY PRO !
