Webb’s $8.5 million option exercised by D-backs

PHOENIX (AP)—Brandon Webb’s(notes) $8.5 million option was exercised Friday by the Arizona Diamondbacks, the team counting on the former Cy Young winner coming back successfully from shoulder surgery.

The 30-year-old right-hander was the team’s opening day pitcher last season, giving up six runs in four innings, then did not take the mound again the rest of the year, eventually undergoing surgery on his pitching shoulder on Aug. 4.

Arizona would have had to pay a $2 million buyout if it had declined the option.

“He’s worked very hard since the surgery,” general manager Josh Byrnes said, “and we’re confident that he’ll return to be a very healthy, effective pitcher.”

A three-time All-Star, Webb won the 2006 NL Cy Young Award and was second in voting the next two years. He is 87-62 with a 3.27 ERA in seven seasons. He ranks second in franchise history to Randy Johnson(notes) in wins, starts (198), innings pitched (1,319 2-3) and strikeouts (1,065).

Webb’s 15 complete games rank behind Johnson and Curt Schilling(notes) for the Diamondbacks.

Byrnes and Webb spoke on a conference call shortly after the announcement was made.

Webb said he knew that the Diamondbacks picking up the option “was up in the air I think for awhile and rightfully so.”

The successful surgery and subsequent good reports on rehabilitation had made it probable that the team would pick up the option.

“We did want to use the time we had but once we got out of the surgery all signs had been positive,” Byrnes said.

Asked about the risk of the move, Byrnes said, “There’s a risk in everything.”

“I think there’s a lot of reward,” he added. “You’re talking about one of the best pitchers in baseball.”

Webb plans to throw for the first time since the surgery next Wednesday, some soft tosses before shutting down and beginning his normal buildup to spring training.

He’s confident that he will still have the nasty sinker that made him one of the league’s best pitchers.

“Even when I was throwing and I was still having some pain, the life on the ball was still there,” Webb said. “I can’t be too sure, but I’ll probably always have that sinking action.”

Webb had pitched more than 200 innings each season from 2004 through 2008 and won 56 games from 2006 through 2008. He went 22-7 in 2008, tying Cleveland’s Cliff Lee(notes) for the most victories in the majors.

Before last season, Webb had only been on the disabled list once as a major leaguer, missing 15 days with right elbow tendinitis in 2003.

“It’s been tough,” he said. “I’m usually used to being out there as much as anybody. It’s tough to sit on the sideline and see the team struggle.”

Webb tried to work his way back from the injury without surgery but after getting opinions from three doctors outside the Diamondbacks organization, he decided to go ahead with the operation.

Texas Rangers physician Dr. Keith Meister performed the surgery.

Webb thought he had a three-year contract extension with Arizona in 2008 but the club withdrew the offer, citing insurance company concerns regarding the shoulder. Webb disputed the findings, then came the shoulder problems this year and any new deal became out of the question.

His future with Arizona beyond next season is uncertain.

“Obviously it’s going to depend on how the season goes for me as well as for the team,” Webb said. “Hopefully it goes well for both of us and we can maybe start some talks toward the end of the season next year.”

8.5 million for Webb is a serious bargain, regardless of him missing '09. He'll be dominating again in '10, no doubt about it.

salary cap would suck the life out of baseball.

so whoever thinks that salary cap would be good is either retarded or plain dumb.

If Webb only pitches 4 inning in '10 like he did in '09 he'll make the Pavano/Yankee deal look good.

Maybe he could use some of Andy Petite's HGH

bendgod you ignorant bastard. Obviously you are a disgruntled fan of some team that's wallowed in mediocrity. You need to open your eyes and you will see that the Yankees are good for baseball. 1st, they sell out in most stadiums they play in (on the road) giving many teams an opportunity to actually play in front of a crowd that they usually don't have and bringing in more revenue for those teams. 2nd, they pay millions in luxury tax which goes to the smaller market teams in which they could use to buy better players (but most often don't). 3rd, they have not only a very large fan base but a continually growing one which generates much revenue for not only the Yankees but MLB. The claim that they bought the title is absurd. by your line of thinking, any team that has purchased a free agent essentially bought whatever team they have (and also bought whatever place they finish). So you hate the Yankees for being more business savvy? Instead of crying about a team that was bought and marketed to generate revenue in which much of goes back into the team to not only get good free agents but to pay the great players that have come up through their farm system and make a great, competitive team, you should only wish that your teams owner was as dedicated to his team as Mr. Steinbrenner has been. Look on the bright side, at least it's football season now, oh wait, you're a stinking raiders fan, sucks to be you.

Fuhk that. The crankees may have bought the title again, but not everyone wants to belittle himself that bad as to go play for the evil empire. If MLB had a cap, like they surely need, the crankees would be celler dwellers and the evil empire would crumble. As I said...fuhk the crankees and all of there ignorant fans that live in denial when it's clear that the cranks bought another one.

Well, if he going to stay with a celler dweller team, he mays as well get paid for it. Surprised the crankees didn't try to buy next years title by picking him up. I'm sure they will find a way to ruin baseball next year as well. No salary cap so we get stuck with the evil empires title purchases crap.

If arm injuries were cancer, an elbow surgery would be like prostate cancer (may take surgery, but a high recovery rate), but a shoulder surgery is more like brain cancer for pitcher (not good news, and you never get over it 100%). That area needs complete immobility for an extended amount of time to "fully" heal, then tons of baby-step rehab processes before you even think of picking up a ball. You lose snap on your pitches, velocity, command, and stamina. It is a major hit. This injury is something that could take 2 full years to fully recover from, and that's just to get back to being a somewhat effective big league pitcher again - not being a Cy Young contender. Webb is a fine pitcher, and AZ must think he's progressed well to throw that kind of cash on the table to a guy who's seriosuly hurt, but I am skeptical to say the least. I would be surprised if we ever see the Webb of the previous 3-4 years again due to this injury. Shoulders are bad news. I hope I am dead wrong.

Geoff D obviosly you know nothing about pitching your arm only has x amount of throws in it before it starts breaking down. When a team over uses a pitcher such as the D- backs did to Webb in 2008 then it takes time to rehabe the arm. So for you to say you are tired of pitchers breaking like fine China is comment only a fan who knows nothing of the game would make, and maybe you are not a fan maybe just a mark for these comment sections and you just want to see your posting on the site.

KNowing AZ, they'll be dumb enough to buy him out. Then he's an unexpected FA that a lot of teams (ANGELS...Are you there..?) might pounce on.

Webb's contract has a team option for 2010. That's probably why both the DBacks and Webb want to see if he can pitch again.

the way I see it, given that the d backs are no contendors at all this year, stay in birmingham talk to Doc Andrews and get the surgery done and then go to Kevin Wilk for PT. Brand new pitcher for 2010.
