Sale of Cubs, Wrigley complete

CHICAGO (AP)—The $845 million sale of the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field and other assets from the Tribune Co. to the Ricketts family was completed Tuesday, more than 2 1/2 years after the baseball franchise was put on the market.

The family of billionaire Joe Ricketts, the founder of Omaha, Neb.-based TD Ameritrade, takes a 95 percent controlling interest in the baseball franchise, its storied ballpark and 25 percent of Comcast Sportsnet, which broadcasts many Cubs games.

After taxes and fees, Chicago-based Tribune, which owns the Chicago Tribune, Los Angles Times, other newspapers and TV stations, expects to reap about $740 million from the deal. Family members Pete, Tom, Laura and Todd Ricketts will control the team as its board of directors, though Tribune retains a 5 percent stake and will have a seat on the board.

The deal tops the record $660 million paid for the Boston Red Sox and its related properties in 2002.

Tom Ricketts, 44, who will serve as board chairman, said it was time to “go to work building the championship tradition that all Cubs fans so richly deserve.” The Cubs have not been to the World Series since 1945 and have not won it since the second of back-to-back championships in 1908.

A news conference was scheduled for Friday at Wrigley Field.

Tribune bought the Cubs in 1981 for $20.5 million from candy maker Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co.

The company announced on Opening Day in 2007 that the marquee baseball franchise and historic ballpark would be sold at the end of that season. But the process was slowed by CEO Sam Zell’s efforts to maximize profits, the collapse of the credit markets and Tribune’s 2008 bankruptcy filing.

Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection last December and the Cubs followed suit a few weeks ago, a short stay intended simply to protect its new owners from potential claims by Tribune creditors.

The Ricketts family sold 34 million Ameritrade shares earlier this year to raise $403 million for the Cubs deal, but still controls about 16 percent of the company’s stock and two board seats.

Tom Ricketts was a market maker at the Chicago Board Options Exchange and finance executive before starting investment bank Incapital LLC in 1999. A Chicago investment banker, he is a Cubs die-hard who grew up watching the team, once lived in an apartment across the street from Wrigley and first met his wife in the stands at a game there.

Lets see, after bankruptcy the owners still take home 740 million. Creditors got a swift kick.

Is this how bankruptcy really works. Suggest the entire population file tomorrow.

Scandals in the Banking system, now a sneaky paperwork move to avoid paying taxes. We love our sports, and let them get away without paying taxes. Good deal or bad deal, don't overlook the financial manipulations that went on. Why is it that the little man only pays taxes.

I am really happy that the Cubs finally are moving forward. I have been a Cubbie fan as long as I can remember. So Slice says the Cubs are all F.I.BS....I am from TN so what does that make me? I have family in Wisconsin and they are all Cub fans. So do the world a favor, grow up and deal with the fact that the Brewers suck!!

I think it's time wrigley field was brought into the 21st century. We need a modern day ballpark with retractable roof so the weather will cease to be an issue. Since there is a lot of dead weight on this team, our chances of making it to a world series are zilch until we get rid of some of it. Jim Hendry shoud go first as his affinity for overpaying underproducing athletes is making me sick. 168 million for Soriano and Bradley and now he wants to sign Chone Figgins. I guess it's only fitting with the new 3 stooges movie comming out that the cubs have their own version. I'd love to see the cubs trade big z to the dodgers for andre ethier and clayton kershaw. As well as Koske @#$%udome and Mike Fontenot to atlanta for Nate Mclouth.

    bigfoot,

so none of those things you mentioned were paid for using taxpayer funds.

what is it that you want? everyone to give up and just work for the government?

i pay my taxes and have a right to go to a ball game if i want.

i'd like to see your tax returns and find out how you spend you money? opera tickets lately?

All Right! The Country Club is back in the swing of things.........busing Bradley, bringing on a great hitting coach, bringing on powerful new baseball ownership...........yes priceless..........The Cubs Dynasty now is moving into gear........solid infield, solid starting pitching (please stay healthy)....Christmas in the post 2009 season.......ok Santa is going to bring an exceptional power hitter who also maintains good average and can hit in the clutch....a player we do not expect.....cool baby!!! Hoping for middle relief.......and a left handed fireman........We could also pick up Guererro from the Angels for a season or two.....so so many options out there.........good luck to the Ricketts Family!!!!

The Trib has been holding the Cubbies back for years. It's time the game got back to that - a game - and someone with a real interest in it is at the helm. All you closet Cub fans will be peeing your self like new puppies next year when the Cubs win it all and you finally reveal yourselves as "life long Cub fans". Here's a clue: we've been backing the greatest baseball team of all time and will appreciate your support next year in our celebration of a World Series Championship! Until then cork your pie holes and get ready for next year.
