Arizona tribe pitches Cubs for spring training

MESA, Ariz. (AP)—An Indian tribe in Arizona is making a pitch to the Chicago Cubs to move their spring training site.

Members of the Gila River Indian tribe recently traveled to Chicago to speak with Cubs management about moving the training to the Indian nation south of Phoenix.

The team, which currently holds spring training in Mesa, has said its in the market for a new spring training facility.

The East Valley Tribune also reported that Mesa has attempted to discourage other Phoenix-area cities from trying to lure the Cubs. Mesa is also dueling with cities in Florida.

A study commissioned by Mesa showed the state would lose $52 million a year if the Cubs left Mesa.

If the training facility is on a reservation would the state still get money? Aren't the reservations tax free or something like that?

$52 million?? I'd like to see those numbers... it's spring training.... not regular season or playoffs. Come on.

The state will not lose $52 million if they move to Gila River. That was only if they left the state of Arizona for Florida.

This is not a bad idea. There is new infrastructure with the 202 and in the future the bypass thru South Mountain to I-10 West. There is a new high-rise hotel. The facility would be right off of I-10 instead of in the city of Mesa causing traffic problems.

It would tick people of at 1st but it will eventually bring in more revenue for the state.

If the Cubs say no, will the Gila put a 100 year curse on the Cubs? Just curious!
