Grabow gets $7.5 million, 2-year deal from Cubs

CHICAGO (AP)—Pitcher John Grabow(notes) became the first of the 171 free agents to reach agreement on a new deal, getting a $7.5 million, two-year contract Friday from the Chicago Cubs.

The 31-year-old left-hander combined to go 3-0 with a 3.36 ERA last season in a career-high 75 relief appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cubs.

“I pretty much let everyone know before I left there that I wanted to come back. It’s a good situation for me and my family,” said Grabow, who said he has a house in Arizona where the Cubs conduct spring training.

Staying in the NL Central and being with a veteran club were also appealing for Grabow.

“It was kind of a no-brainer,” he said.

He pitched 30 games and had a 3.24 ERA for the Cubs after he was acquired on July 30 along with left-hander Tom Gorzelanny(notes) for pitchers Jose Ascanio(notes) and Kevin Hart(notes), and minor league infielder Josh Harrison.

Selected by the Pirates in the third round of the 1997 amateur draft, Grabow is 20-15 with six saves and a 4.03 ERA in 420 major league relief appearances with the Pirates and Cubs.

As one of the Cubs most experienced relievers, Grabow said he has no preference what his role might be.

“If it’s the sixth inning or if it’s the ninth inning, it doesn’t matter. Your job is to go in there and get guys out,” he said.

Grabow said he’d been pitching with bone chips in his elbow for about three years, but it hasn’t been a major issue.

“Throwing a baseball for all these years your arm is going to develop different things that are just part of the wear and tear,” he said. “It’s something you learn to manage and I got a routine I do every day before the game starts to prepare my arm to be able to pitch that day.”

Average of $3.875M per for a lefty-specialist! This guy doesn't even qualify as a set-up man. No wonder the Cubs haven't won a WS in 101 years!

No more middle of the road players!!! How do they think they can win a title with what they have ,,Time to spend some money on some true talent . Half of the players they pick up were let go from a team for a reason, you really think milton bradley is the answer? Then you let derosa go? rich harden is a great start, along with z and dempster , lilly..I'd like to add the name of halladay in that mix...move soriano back to second and pick up some better outfielders( Matt holliday)...soriano was really never meant to be an outfielder ( can't catch pop-ups ) and looks lost out there. The cubs are just a few players from really being a great team, but unfortunatly they will pick up guys who are one throw away from injury or retirement.......then give them millions to be average.

die hard cubs fan here. and the cubs need to sign a couple starters this off season and need to do sumthing with this outfield. granderson wud be a wonderful pick up if they cud sum how manage to pull that off. wishful thinking sayin i hope soriano can have a good season for once where he is a consistent hitter. if the offense can stay healthy though the cubs have a shot at the playoffs. i believe injuries is what did us in. injuries and the @#$% ass man ppl call kevin gregg. hopefully sum good signings cum this offseason. go cubs!!

reese/jewtown- maybe one of u could educate me on where milton/skin color were mentioned? i don't quite get ur "battle". reese, i just wanna say that (tho i fancy myself pretty MLB knowledgable) many ppl visit here "to become more informed/share opinions". i for my part, try never to "duke it out" w/ a fellow cubs fan, thats just me... anyways, i don't remember reese from past couple yrs, but it should be a pleasure talkin cubs w/ u this yr. good luck w/ ur son, but its a very difficult path he's on. many, many youngsters try, very, very few actually make it into the farm system, much less mlb. even if he never makes da bigs, the lessons learned (hard work, responsibility, teamwork, respect etc.) can be taken and used in a great many of lifes challenges. peace

Hey jewtown, that was a pretty lame comment as my first post includes you. My son, who's 7, you wil see in the majors. He's a young jeter in the making. Anyways, with adding Granderson, he can sit against lefties and we can play Reed Johnson against lefties becuase he his well over .300 against them. Both have speed and decent arms. Soriano will come around,we hope and I would trade @#$%udome and start Fox is right. I was hopong the cubs would get Holiday for center but he's gona want Soriano type money. We will land an OF and the other thing we need id a starter. Marmol i think wil be great this season as a closer. We have the best hitting coach in baseball that will help us score more runs and i see 90 wins this season. Go cubs.

I like a lot about what you said, but as a Tiger's fan, I think you have made a small error. Now, this is completely my opinion, so no need to jump down my @#$%, Cubs fans. but Granderson is not a true leadoff hitter. He hits well at leadoff, and can give you a spark with an extra base hit or leadoff homer. BUT he is not a TRUE leadoff hitter. His On base and BA speak for themselves, and are even closer to Alfonso's than to what i think are a prototypical leadoff hitter's(Chone Figgins) I think in Granderson the Cubs get an upgrade in defense, (though not much of a throwing arm, but thats gotten better last year) and not much else in terms of finding a guy who can hit where Soriano does. Soriano can steal more bases, (Granderson self-admittingly does not like to steal, and when told to get bigger leads, he gets picked off and doesn't get great jumps) Soriano can hit the same number of HR and strikeouts are similar between the two.

Ithink if the fans just be fans and let the ballplayers play ball like we are paying them the game will be much better for everyone. Leave the bad comments at home or keep them to your self, the color of Milton skin do not have anything to do with his baseball skills . Now if you went to school maybe you could be out their in right field playing for the Chicago Cubs right hahahaha.

reese, what u say about the knowledge here may be true. i agree we needed grabow, i just question what he cost (i was thinkin 4-5.5 mill for 2 yrs). that said, we do need pitching: Harden all but gone, Lilly will be recovering/getting up to speed into late april, no proof wells can repeat '09, Demp proved zip in '09, Jeff S is an "experiment in progress"...thats just SPs. Hieleman is gone, hopefully Gregg to follow him, Marmol is great but not consistant, nothing certain bout Gorz yet... grabow can fill SP, RP and maybe closer (limited) roles. As for Z, too tuff to call... at 91mil, will he ever win 16-20 games? i think ppl question the fianances of his deal, and if he's a true "ace" that we associate w/ that type of $$. As for trading Sorryano, not happening, under (an overpaid) contract. He's also part of the reason Jaramillo is now here. as always, good luck to our cubbies, but i can't predict/forsee a WS or even a Div Championship in 2010...yet. Too much unfinished biz to work thru in one offseason. Tho i'd like to see Granderson in cubbie blue!

It's clear to me that most people in here don't know anything about baseball. PITCHING wins championships. GRABOW has talent and he's a lefty. BIG Z is a must keep because he can hit, run, pitch, and he has great enthusiams when he's out there. As far as money goes, how much are we paying sry a$$ Soriano???????? Trade him to Detroit and get Granderson(a true lead-off hitter) and trade Bradley as well. Jake Fox can play right or sign Holliday.

WOW! Another mediocre middle reliever! That goes great with our below average first baseman and our overpaid and underachieving outfield. Now all we need is a shortstop, second baseman and some starting pitching and we will be able to compete in our own division! I guess we are "rebuilding" again. How about getting a real closer, getting rid of Z and finding some WINNERS!!!

Ok now that he has his money he'll be like the rest and claim the bone chips were bothering him and forcing him to have elbow surgery and not play all season. I hope not but it sees to be a growing trend in Chicago.

Some dumb comments in here. A good lefty in the bullpen is a must. He and Sean Marshall will be important pieces in the Cubs pen in '10. You can argue that they paid him too much, but signing him was a good move. Next, they've got to get a right fielder.

he claims thats the team for him if so cool because pitching in chicago is no easy task signing early shows commitment to a team not just desperate to get a job. To bad has 2 more years on a non playoff team won't be too bad if milton the team killer is gone,at least they will not be embarresd on espn once a week.
