Carpenter and Hill voted comeback players of year

NEW YORK (AP)—Chris Carpenter(notes) has been voted NL comeback player of the year and Aaron Hill(notes) has won the AL award.

Limited to four starts over the prior two seasons because of elbow surgery and a shoulder injury, Carpenter was 17-4 with a league-leading 2.24 ERA for the St. Louis Cardinals. The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner, Carpenter won 11 consecutive decisions from early July to early September.

Hill appeared in just 55 games in 2008 due to a concussion. He hit .286 for the Toronto Blue Jays this year and established career highs with 36 homers and 108 RBIs, the most among major league second basemen.

The awards were voted on by the 30 beat writers of MLB.com.

    Btown-
Sandoval plays 3rd base, and rarely catches so not sure what the argument is there...

His stats compared to other catchers are irrelevant because 1. that isn't even the argument, no other catcher is close to Mauer 2. you posted his season ending stats..sure he qualifies for every stat mentioned, but he still missed a whole month of the year, and played a total of 138 games, compared to M-Cabrera,Teixeira, and Morales for example who all played 155-160 games.

Aside for the last month, Mauer has also had someone hitting behind him who is pretty damn good, and is a former MVP him self, in Morneau, and obviously guys have gotten on base for him, if he has 96 rbis, so saying Tex shouldn't win it because he has talented players around him, is ridiculous. That's like saying Joe DiMaggio shouldn't have won an MVP because he had Yogi.

Again Mauer prob will win the MVP, and he was a beast this season, but it shouldn't be a one man race like in the NL, because there are a couple of other guys who deserve consideration as well.

Ok Mauer haters, your guys' only reasoning for him not being MVP is how he missed the first month of the season. Did any of you bother to look at where he ranks as far as games played by catchers? Tied for 6th with AJP and McCann. Now where does he rank among catchers in stats.

Hits. - Tied for 1st with Sandoval (he'll be leading after today)
    HR's - 1st with 28.
    RBI's - 2nd
    Runs - 1st
    Average - 1st (leading by 34 pts)
    OBP - 1st (leading by 55 pts.)
    Slugging - 1st (leading by 30 pts)
    OPS - 1st (leading by 84 pts)

So based on the games played and the stats, you can't say he didn't play enough games to qualify as MVP because he matches up evenly with other catchers in the league.

Now how does he rank against Tex, who is Mauer's biggest competition.

Hits. - Mauer 189 vs Tex 178 - ADV Mauer
    HR's - Mauer 28 vs Tex 39 - ADV Tex
    RBI's - Mauer 96 vs Tex 122 - ADV Tex
Runs - Mauer 94 - Tex 104 - ADV Tex - It seems Tex is running away with it huh? but wait...
Average - Mauer .364 vs Tex .292 - ADV Mauer (BY 72 PTS!!!)
    OBP - Mauer - .442 vs Tex .383 - ADV Mauer by 59 Pts.
Slugging - Mauer .586 vs Tex .565 - ADV Mauer
OPS - Mauer 1.027 vs. Tex .948 - ADV Mauer by 79 pts.

If you examine the numbers, Mauer leads every INDIVIDUAL category except HR's. If you think about it, RBI's and Runs depend on your teammates, so Tex having 1-2 men on base everytime he comes up, or having A-Rod behind him driving him in don't tell us how good he is, it tells us how good his teammates are. The MVP award should be based on how a players performance helps his team. Mauer got on base more often (in less games) and was more clutch (Mauer with RISP - .367, Tex with RISP - .264, over a 100 pt difference???) and my favorite stat, OPS with bases loaded. Tex had a mediocre .744 and Mauer was king at 1.194. Yes you saw that correctly, a difference of .450.

I could go on all day on how every category favors Mauer, and then remind you that he is a CATCHER, which is unheard of. Mauer is the hands down MVP, and if the writers even give one 1st place vote to anyone else, I will track that voter down and shove these stats down his/her throat.

Mauer is a great player, probably the best catcher in the decade, but Tex was more valuable this season. Mauer missed a whole month of the season, played in only (what will be after today) 138 games and beside his batting average this isn't as great of an offensive season as everyone is making it seem. Many catchers have hit for greater power, and have had a lot of rbi's (think Piazza, Fisk, Campanella). Tex is leading the league in the two other important categories, home runs (tied), and rbi's, completely changed the defense, played 156 games, and has hit many clutch hits through out the season, in big games for the Yankees.

Point is, Mauer doesn't have 100 runs, 200 hits, 30 doubles, or 100 rbi's, and for someone who is having "such a great offensive season", he should have at lest one of those. Too many people are making a big deal of OPS and SLG, but go check his stats from the last month, both have drooped significantly.

He had an incredible season, and will prob win the MVP because so many writers were already naming him the MVP in June, but I don't really agree with it.

How can they announce the comeback players of the year when the season is not officially over? Michael Cuddyer is an excellent candidate and still has one game left. What if he homers 3 times in the playoff game Tuesday night and the Twins can pull off their amazing comeback for 2009? Wouldn't this outshine the fine seasons of Hill, Bartlett and Martinez... of course if he goes 0-5 with 4 DP's and the Twins lose this is a different story - but the bottom line is a one game playoff is still considered to be a regular season game and this announcement really was premature.

hey how can tex be the MV for the yankees when he didnt start hitting till a-rod got in the lineup. lets face it the real MVP of the yankee team is jeter followed by A-ROD. jeter has been consistant all year batting over the 330 mark again and A-ROD just made the team better by being in the game.

Anyone know if bartlett get nominated cause he had one hecka of a year. Anyone, @ David W C. It's "all three" instead of "both" and won lost should not matter as much as it is sooo dependent on your team. I freagin remember when gio gonzalez got shelled for 7 runs and still WON the game. Yeah.... wins shouldn't be that weighted. If lincecum was playing for the yanks, cards, or dodgers, i bet he'd be the quickest one this year to 20.

Carpenter for the NL Cy Young over Wainwright. Carpenter started four less games, had almost as many wins and the rest of the stats speak for themselves.

I think Cuddyer's name should have been mentioned in this article. He hit 29 more homers this year and had 58 more rbi's. He also was the Twins MVP since Morneau went down and has carried the team this month as they clawed back. I don't have a problem with Hill winning, but I would say Cuddy over Victor Martinez for sure.

    Im going like this:
    NL Cy Young: Adam Wainwright
NL MVP Pujols, though Fielder should get some votes
NL ROY Happ, Hanson, or McGeehee

AL Cy Young: Not as clear cut as saying Greinke!! Maybe King Felix or CC (if he didnt get shelled in his last start)
AL MVP: Can it be anyone other than Mauer??
    AL ROY: Maybe Porcello??

Wainwright should win NL Cy young last year he was just offel, he comes back an wins 19 games, your right when they said the bullpen lost games for him he could have been 21 or 22 game winner.
Pujois should win MVP he is a lot better than any player thats means Howard or Fielder. he is Even better fielder than both of them.

How on earth do you think Martinez deserves this. So what he hit 2 hrs he still had a .278 average. He also played in 73 games last year and he too had a great year the year before and is now splitting time between catching and 1st which is almost like a day off for him :-)

    #20,

I agree, Lincecum should not win the Cy Young....but it has nothing to do with his record in September. The Cy Young should go to the best pitcher, not the 'most valuable' pitcher. A start in April should mean the same as a start in September for the Cy Young (I know it doesn't, but it should).

I'd give Carpeneter the Cy Young over Wainwright as well. So what that Wainwright lost a win or two because of the pen...Carpenter's ERA and WHIP are lower. I know wins tend to get you the Cy Young, but Carp has been the more dominate pitcher this year.

Carpenter was the obvious choice in the NL.....but I'm not sold on Aaron Hill in the American League.

This should have been Victor Martinez's award.

25 HRs in 2007...then 2 last year. Comes back with 108 RBIs (same as Hill) and 23 HRs. Victor put up a better Batting Average and OPS than Hill as well.

Hill didn't really comeback as much as this was a breakout year. Hill never had an OPS over .800 til this year....Victor was over .800 from 2004-2007 til he fell off the map last year with that elbow injury.

HE was the true 'comeback' player this year in the AL.

Victor Martinez also couldn't throw out a runner if 2nd base were 2 feet in front of him. Aaron Hill was coming off a solid season before his concussion. Hill came back, put up some of the best 2nd baseman numbers in history, played gold glove level defence, and all this on a terrible team.

RME. The Jeter fascination still makes no sense.

Jeter's not even the frigging MVP of his own team. Tex is. As soon as Tex started hitting, the Yanks season really turned around.

To all you fools out there still hollering Lincecum.......He went 2-4 since august 23rd. That is two wins four losses. That is FOUR losses in august and September, That is about the same time the Rockies zoomed right by them. What big crunch time game did he win. And sorry all ofd you other Cardinals fans hollering Carpenter, you are shouting about the wrong pitcher. The 8th inning of the game two Saturdays ago all but sealed the deal for Wainwright. I never seen a batter look as bad as Giambi did when he came up with a chance to win it. If Carpenter should win it will be because the bullpen blew two leads and Wainwright lost a 1-0 decision. last month. He could easily have 22-23 wins. p.s. as a public service please adopt a Cubs fan. Let them know that it is okay to watch winning baseball for a change.

    NL MVP: Pujols
    NL Cy Young: Carpenter

    AL MVP: Mauer
    AL Cy Young: Greinke

Carpenter would be the only one worth debating.
Mauer should win in a landslide.
Greinke and Pujols by a slightly smaller landslide.
