Big League Stew - MLB

Score and situation: Yankees 7, Phillies 3  Yankees win Series 4-2

Leading lads: Stone-faced Hideki Matsui(notes) went 3-for-4 with a homer and six RBIs to almost single-handledly (or double-handedly, since we're talking swinging) make the Yankees offense go in Game 6. He made the most of his limited plate appearances, clubbing three homers and driving in eight runs in just 13 at-bats to win Series MVP. He also might have played in his final game with the Yankees; he will be a free agent.

Mariano Rivera(notes) was the Yankees' rock at the end of the game as usual, going the final 1 2/3 innings to close it out for a save — in spirit.

Head hangers: The Phillies went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and most of it hangs around the neck of Pedro Feliz(notes), who left five runners stranded.

Key play: The Phillies' best threat of the night came with them down four runs in the seventh, but left-hander Damaso Marte(notes) struck out Chase Utley(notes) with two men aboard to sink the rally. Marte had an awful, injury plagued regular season, but he was unscored-upon in eight playoff appearances.

Key stat: Pedro Martinez(notes) threw 77 pitches but 31 were outside of the strike zone. His inability to command, plus a lack of zip made it amazing the Yankees didn't score more.

What they're talking about: The Yankees won their first title since 2000, which seems like a couple of lifetimes for the Bronx Bombers.

What they're saying: "You never know where you're going to get back here." — Jorge Posada(notes).

What's next: A parade for the Yankees. Then spring training in about 3 1/2 months.

Well can we now say it`s only a matter of time before Jeter, A-Rod and Rivera are inducted into the HoF? The biggest payroll in baseball does it again!

Every year the World Series seems to become less and less important to the sports landscape. Why is that? Personally, it just doesn't *grab* me like it used to. Perhaps I'm tired of listening to the same jargon and cliches spouted forth by announcers and pundits, or maybe it's the mental lethargy of having to sit through 6 months of meaningless games before finally getting to watch something that matters. Or maybe the steroids scandal has affected me more than I thought it did. It irritates me that something I used to enjoy so much now feels like an option, and the pull to watch every pitch and mind-numbing throw-over to first doesn't hold the same magical allure. I didn't come on here to rain on anyone's parade, and I hoped you enjoyed watching your team, but I can't help but shake these feelings that the World Series, and maybe MLB and baseball in general, just don't matter like they used to, and I'm not so sure that is a good thing.

Is it really something to be proud of when you bought it instead of really earned it? It took a billion dollars to pay for this world series title and it still wasn't easy. Today, the Yankees beat a pitcher who was well beyond his prime and nobody wanted in their rotation after scouting him.

Matsui should be re-signed. Who else are they going to replace him with? I can't think of a better DH/OF player in the upcoming free agency pool, and Matsui is proven.

Well I tell you what. Yeah they did buy it. But to every small market fan out there (including my Minnesota Twins), the only reson you hate the yankees is that they can afford it. The real devil in this whole issue is the Players Union. I love the players, but their Union has too much power. We need profit sharing and a salary cap if we EVER want to fix this Fiasco that Mr Selig calls "Major League Baseball"

to many haters on hear...the yankees play within the rules, the mets, dodgers, angels, redsox all have double the payroll as those small market teams!does money make yuor chances greater ..yes,but does it guarentee chips??no cause in that case we would win every year!!!!the mets bought k-rod,johan,beltran,delgado,piazza...how many have they won????it's who you sign with the money...and our owners want to win every year and don't worry about market sales and profit as other gm's....so chill out with the sour grapes we play within the rules and pay the luxury tax at the end of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
