Big League Stew - MLB

The NL Cy Young title is staying in the Land of Lincecum.

After a classic photo finish that saw the third-place pitcher get the most first-place votes, San Francisco's Tim Lincecum(notes) still garnered the highest vote total (100) over Chris Carpenter(notes) (94) and Adam Wainwright(notes) (90) to repeat as the Senior Circuit's top pitcher on Thursday.

Tiny Tim is the first back-to-back winner since Randy Johnson(notes) won four straight between 1999 and 2002. He's the first pitcher in history to win with only 15 victories.

All three hurlers presented convincing cases, but BBWAA voters ultimately decided to look past "High Young's" 15-7 mark and reward his league-high 261 strikeouts and four complete games. His 2.48 ERA was only second to Carpenter's 2.16. (Lincecum, though pitched over 30 innings more than the St. Louis ace, who spent time on the disabled list).

My gut feeling is that most voters didn't think Lincecum did anything to lose the title, while the Cardinals duo stole votes from each other. Defenders of both St. Louis pitchers will have a case to make with Giants beat writer Henry Schulman — gasp! — providing a great roadmap for why he cast his ballot for Carpenter, a resilient pitcher who dominated down the stretch.

(Lincecum can't hold a grudge against Schulman, either. Back in October, the Giants pitcher said he'd vote for Carpenter if he had a ballot.)

In the end, the award will stay in the Bay Area and Lincecum will finally have to go in front of the media to answer questions about his recent marijuana run-in (though it's being said he'll release a statement about his charges after answering baseball questions).

Over his two dominating seasons, Lincecum has often been compared to Henry Rowengartner, the kid pitcher from the movie, "Rookie of The Year."

But given the two Cy Youngs he'll be carrying under his arm while he and the Giants talk about buying out some arbitration-eligible years, perhaps a new comparison would be more apt.

Congrats to Timmy. He is clearly the most devastating pitcher in baseball (okay, so Greinke is close). His change up should win a Cy Young on its own.
Hopefully the pot issue dissipates (substitute joke about the pot smoke dissipating here) and we can focus on what an outstanding talent and great person Tim Lincecum is.

Eh, I think this one will ultimately be regarded as an accidental Cy Young. As Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch pointed out, Lincecum came in second in first place votes (Wainwright had more), second place votes (Carpenter had more), and third place votes (Wainwright had more). A situation where 2 plus 2 plus 2 equals 1 sounds more like the BCS than the Cy Young, but there you go.

Looks like more National League pitchers should start using a "dopey" change-up. When to go Timmy, just do the speed limit when driving through Vancouver, WA.

Giants need to A) pay timmy his money and B) GO GET THIS MAN AN OFFENSE. The Giants have squandered 2 cy young winners in a row. Stop being cheap skates, sign some talent, and make a run at the crown!

BS award decision. Right up there with the Nobel Peace Prize after that choice. Congrats to "High" Young Award recipient. Wainwright was far superior with 19 wins. Cards bullpen cost him his 20th win and award.

Lincecum is a great pitcher and all, had a great season. And probably is the best pitcher of the three.... but I dont think he had the best season. The award should go to the pitcher who had the best year, it doesnt necessarily mean its the best pitcher. Which is how they messed up. My vote would've went to Wainwright, he was consistently good all season and led the league in wins and would've actually had a lower era and 20 wins if the cards bullpen didnt blow it on his last pitched game of the season. The voting this year was a mistake. But I do give my congrats to Lincecum he is an amazing player, he just simply didnt have a better season than Wainwright.

Congrats to Timmy! I think voters realized that Timmy was handicapped by his team, evidenced by the number of no-decisions he received. Wins and losses are only a small indication of a pitcher's skill. You have to look at factors like: WHIP, ERA and opponent's batting average. In such case, Timmy is deserving of the award.

Even though I tend to agree with them on this debate, I am already tired of hearing crybaby Cardinals fans whine about how their two guys got screwed over in the voting. While they might be right, it's hard to hear their point over their sobbing.

Lincecum wins 20 in the St Louis lineup. Don't get me wrong, Wainwright is legit and could have easily won the award, but wins shouldnt have anything to do with this award as the Cardinals have a far superior team to the Giants.

i can't call this a steal being even being a Cardinal fan. But, i would like to hear justification of Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus (which is a baseball bible if there ever was one) and Keith Law of ESPN for leaving Carpenter off their ballot all together??? Carpenter was statistically the most dominant---and missing 5 starts is not a reason to not vote for him at all. You can't say Lince wasn't deserving----but as Wainwright said himself "if Carp hadn't missed those starts are we even discussing who the winner will be?" The best WHIP and he best ERA deserves some recognition. Shame on Carroll and Law!!!!

Thats bull [profane], when you look at a pitchers stats wins should be the determining factor not era, even though it should also be considered. But wins are most important, Wins help your team the most, and help them get into the postseason which Wainwright did. Then he pitched 8 innings of one run baseball in the playoffs then Holliday and the bullpen again blew it for Waino. Wins should be the determining factor in voting because when it comes down to it. The most important thing to the team is getting the big W

Chris Carpenter got robbed! Better Wins to loss ratio, better era, and made the playoffs.

And besides that, if you were even going to say that era is the determining factor then Carpenter should've won the award because he by far had the best era. Voting this year was all around very very screwed up
