Big League Stew - MLB

Don't look now, but another name from Mark McGwire's past is dragging the former slugger back into the spotlight by tying him to steroid use.

According to a report on Deadspin, Jay McGwire, Mark's estranged younger brother, has started shopping a tell-all book proposal to New York publishing houses. Currently titled The McGwire Family Secret, the book reportedly details how bodybuilder Jay introduced Mark to steroids in 1994, a time when injuries were threatening to derail Big Mac's big league career. McGwire's career experienced a revival in '95 and he hit 345 home runs over the next seven seasons, including a then record-breaking 70 in the summer of '98.

Jay says that Mark started using small doses of Deca-Durabolin to help with recovery and that he switched to the now-infamous andro in '98 because it was legal and he didn't need to add any more muscle mass.

He also claims that he's only airing out the dirty laundry because the rarely-out-in-public McGwire is busy passing J.D. Salinger as America's top recluse and that helping him clear the air will help the country "forgive" his brother.

Jay's reasoning for "coming clean" (via Deadspin):

"Mark is a man I think most would like to forgive because his reason wasn't nefarious — it was for survival. My bringing the truth to surface about Mark is out of love. I want Mark to live in truth to see the light, to come to repentance so he can live in freedom — which is the only way to live. "

No one has yet bought Jay's proposal and it's worth noting that his act of wanting forgiveness for Mark is laced with hypocrisy — the two brothers haven't talked in years. Accordingly, the New York Times reported on Friday that the book proposal has not attracted very much interest. One publisher specifically expressed distaste over buying a book that centers around a "brother ratting out a brother."

From the New York Times:

"There are so many things about it that I find suspect," said David Hirshey, the executive editor of HarperCollins. "If Jay McGwire is to be believed, he says he is setting the record straight out of quote love unquote for his brother, although a cynic might say it's out of love for a big payday."

Since we probably have a better chance of finding Osama bin Laden than getting Mark McGwire to go on record, the confident guess here is that Mark will stay silent on the whole story and  Jay's book will either stay in the round file or it'll be picked up by a risk-taking publisher who will get less-than-impressive sales results. In other words, Jay McGwire's buzz and impact on the baseball world may have already reached its apex this week.

I think this is pretty much a dead issue as other than in home-runs McGwire does not have HOF numbers and I am sure he is not planning a comeback. He hasn't been involved in baseball for seven years!!!!!!

I went to high school with him and his name is JJ, not Jay...he's the youngest of the McGwire's. He was into body building in HS from what I recall.

Jay's bull$hit excuse for wanting to publish this book is right up there with " this is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you ". Obviously honesty and decency weren't high on the list of traits that the McGwire parents tried to instill in their sons.

Steroid use? Mark McGwire?? Really, truly?? I am shocked......An estranged brother trying to make bucks off it, gee, REALLY......Sad story, what else is there to say.......The only person in America who believes there weren't enhancing drugs involved is the man himself, however we aren't here to talk of the past...........

Travis, saying McGwire "doesn't have HOF stats except for homers" is kind of like saying dolly parton ain't much to look at naked except for her boobs

So are there any more cheating douchebags in the McGwire family? Funny that one 'roid addled brain thinks ratting out his brother whose 'roid shrunken 'nads keep him from fessing up is helping him. I for one am not ready to forgive the dirty numbskull and I don't think HOF voters are either.

Let the past die already. Jay needs to keep his 'roid' ridden dumbass outta Mark's life already. He is just tying to make a name for himself. That's usually what happens to people with such a low self asteem. They start looking for outlets for attention. Androstein is not a steroid. It is just a juiced up workout supplement that aids the workouts. Leave the man alone and let him live his life with his son. Jay just needs to shrivel up and go away once and for all.

McGwire saved baseball, and he cheated in the process. After the strike, interest in the game was down, and the chase for Maris got people watching again. Juicing aside, THAT should be hall worthy.

We all have that brother or brother in law or other relative that's always got their hand out for a hand out. If and when your brother rats you out it only speaks volumes about him. It says nothing about you.

In the aftermath of another sports scandal several years ago, a columnist wrote, "A fish stinks beginning at the head." In this case, the head is Bud Selig. The tail would be the likes of Jay (JJ?) McGwire and other bottom feeders. The monumental greed, arrogance and stupidity manifested in MLB has completely turned me away from the sport. The "Soap Opera" atmosphere surrounding all major league sports has become tiresome. It seems you have to go to Page 4 or 5 of the Sports Section to find news about the actual games, after stories about alleged steroid use, contract hassles, players yapping about not getting enough "touches" or playing time, etc., ad infinitum. Sometimes I'm glad to live in a city that has minor league baseball and hockey. The players on those teams are several steps away from stepping up to "The Big Show," waiting for their turn to become greedy, arrogant and/or stupid.

apparently you read and absorb all o dat stuff that you claim to hate. I think you be lying when you say you
are turned away from the sport.
Anyway, I'm confused why some of you think Big Mac is hard to find. He has been criticized for answering the way
that he did during the hearings. However, if everyone would have been so wise, this would have all went away
a long time ago. All athletes should answer the same way about anything that is not illegal. Citizens are actually
expected to answer for something that was not illegal, simply because it is later illegal? Dangerous.

JJ does have credibility, but I'm not sure why he would want to expose Mark in a hurtful way except for his own personal gain. My father said years ago when watching the Mark take off that he thought JJ got Mark into steroids, everyone in our hometown knew JJ was a bodybuilder and did steroids. My brothers played HS football in the mid-80s with Dan and he was a very nice guy as were his parents. JJ played sports, but he wasn't as successful as his brothers.
