Big League Stew - MLB

The way the 2009 postseason is going, Yankees skipper Joe Girardi should plan on accepting his Overmanager of the Year Award come the off-season.

Baseball managers should be like doctors — first, taking an oath to do no harm. But, rather than letting the game play out a little, Girardi put on his wizard's cloak, consulted his talking magic 8-ball and went to his bench and bullpen over and over and over (and over) in Game 3 of the ALCS. Several of his moves did nothing more than lengthen the time of the game.

And put the Yankees in position to lose, 5-4 to the Angels.

Girardi officially jumped the shark as a manager when he removed reliever David Robertson(notes) after the right-hander retired the first two batters he faced in the Angels' half of the 11th in a 4-4 tie.

You see, Howie Kendrick(notes) was coming up; Howie was 1 for 2 — one for TWO — in his career against Robertson. While that does compute to a menacing .500, it's not exactly a large sample size with which to work. But Girardi just had to do something, or else a .500 hitter was coming up. He couldn't sit by and watch (which is exactly what he should have done).

Alfredo Aceves(notes), the Yankees' seventh reliever of the afternoon, had never allowed a hit to Kendrick — in zero at-bats — for a much safer-seeming .000 batting average.

Why, Joe, why?

"It's just different kind of stuff against those hitters," Girardi said. "And we have all the match-ups, and all the scouting reports, and we felt that, you know, it was a better match up for us."

As perhaps you already know, Aceves faced two batters and the game was over. Kendrick singled and he scored, one batter later, on Jeff Mathis'(notes) RBI double for the Angels victory. Just like that. Instead of a 3-0 series lead and a near-knockout punch by the Yankees, the Angels are back in the series.

Great job, Mr. Wizard!

And it's not the only example of Girardi's meddling. We got a list!

• Putting the steal on, when the Angels were looking for it with the pitch-out, with pinch runner Brett Gardner(notes) in the eighth. Gardner was out easily at second, right before Jorge Posada(notes) hit a tying homer. Hit-and-run at some point in the inning, maybe, but running Gardner with no outs was reckless. Sometimes, Earl Weaver, you wait for the home run.

• Joe also swapped rag-armed Johnny Damon(notes) in left field for designated hitter Jerry Hairston when the Angels threatened to score in the 10th. Bold, kinda, except the Yankees forfeited the DH from that point, which led to ...

• Girardi removing Rivera from the game after just one inning because the pitcher's spot had to bat in the top of the 11th. Oh, Girardi says Rivera was good for only one inning because of his 2 1/3-inning romp in Game 2. It was only 25 pitches for Mo.

• Inefficient bullpen management all night: Joba Chamberlain(notes): three batters faced; Robertson: two; Aceves: two; Damaso Marte(notes) one; Phil Coke(notes) 1. Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse notes: Girardi has made 29 pitching changes in six postseason games. Those relievers have thrown a total of 22 innings. Wasteful!

• Even if Aceves wriggles out of the 11th, Girardi left the Yankees with one pitcher — Chad Gaudin(notes) — in the bullpen. In a tie game, on the road, when there always will be a bottom of the inning, even if you go ahead.

Maybe there's more. But it's enough to make the Angels and Yankees play to at least five games.

Great piece -- absolutely on the money. I'd add that while some managers do get too cautious with using their closing, if Girardi knew in advance that Mariano only could be used for one inning, he HAS to suck it up and hold him back for a closeout situation with the lead.

Don't forget that had the game gone longer, Girardi would have had only one pitcher in the bullpen (like you said) but with the pitcher's spot also hitting in the 2nd spot in the order! Can you imagine needing that big hit in the top of the 13th and having to bat Gaudin? He's luckier the game ended when it did!

LOL @ Ari seriously are u a bum whose posting on yahoo through the library computer? Talk about buying players last i checked no1 in the majors is playing for free. As far as winning the WS...Yanks 26 vs how many WS do the Angelas have? And last I checked we're up in the series 2-1 and had the best regular season record in the majors since u claim the Angels to be the hotter team. Just a reminder the Yanks hit 4 HRS in the game.

    Ari,
You don't buy your players? Are you serious?
The guy who hit the tying home run was bought. So was the CF, closer, etc.

NaJaM, i'll agree with you that Ari probably needs to leave the rap alone (but hey, to the victors go the spoils, and today the Angels were the victors), but to equate buying players to 'no one in the majors is playing for free' is just stupid. The point, which is ridiculous that someone has to explain this to you, is that the Wanks (see how I can change a letter in the team name and act like a 5 year old?) have outbid the rest of baseball to buy the vast majority of their talent. As for the the 26 rings, keep enjoying all those titles from the 20's - 50's! What have the Yankees done lately? I know: Not win a World Series this century. The Angels have.
Torre is 10x the manager Girardi is (not to mention Sciosia). See you tomorrow!

I think once Vlad showed in that 2 out at bat that he was fighting off what Petitte was throwing, they should have cut bait and passed him to first to pitch to Rivera. There was no reason to let Guerrero hit.

Totallly agree, how many times now has he unloaded his entire bullpen to leave just Gaudin available? It's like he's managing an all-star game and trying to get everyone into the game! lol

excellent point sheila! Guerrero's not been reliable to say the least, but there was much more a danger of him going deep than Rivera.

absolutely terrible bullpen management. the announcers had just finished saying how amazing robertson had pitched to morales. thank you for correctly identifying this mistake as the most important.
the decision to remove damon and lose the DH is somewhat questionable. but rivera simply isn't accustomed to pitching so many innings anymore. 2+ on saturday and then 1+ today and some more tomorrow? nah. in the press conference girardi explained that he may have let rivera bat in a save situation (i.e., if jeter had got on base so that mariano could bat - and bunt him somewhere). this is OK logic and only serves as a 'mistake' to those people who don't understand people.
one thing though... the outfielders were playing at the wall... so why didn't jerry hariston jr. catch that ball? he badly misread and misplayed it. damon isn't much better. but hariston should catch some blame here. watch the replay.

Yankee's do buy titles. How big is to win when your payroll is 70 million more than the closest team. With their payroll they should win the world series every year. If the win 9 titles out of 10 they are still a failure. Baseball is a joke till they figure it out. The Yankees 26 dont mean crap till every team is playing by the same rules. With out all the LITTLE teams the Yankee's dont mean anything. You have to have a real league to have value in your team. You cant play by yourselves(maybe the Yankees think they can). Maybe some day the Yankee's will get a clue and maybe some day their fans will too. But then again those are the same fans paying 2000 a month for an apartment in the city....Do you have any clue how big and nice of a house you could buy for a morgage of 2000 a month in most parts of the country....dumb asses
