PHILADELPHIA — Brett Favre's return to Green Bay might mean that South Philly can't officially be the center of today's sports universe, but it certainly feels that way from inside the Lager-and-pretzel-fed belly of the beast. The Eagles beat the Giants, 40-17, to take a share of the NFC East lead earlier on Sunday and now some of the same fans who watched the dismantling are in Citizens Bank Park awaiting Game 4 of the World Series.
(How lucky have Philly fans been lately? This is the second year in a row they've hosted a NFL game and a World Series game in the same parking lot on the same day.)
I anticipated seeing a lot of back-and-forth between the New York and Philly fan camps, but by the time the game let out at Lincoln Financial Field, it seemed as if all of the blue shirts had already fled for the New Jersey turnpike. They left behind a lot of happy Eagles fans, many of whom returned to their tailgates to watch Vikings-Packers or stood in a long line for McFadden's — the bar inside CBP — to get a good spot to watch the baseball game.
Things overheard at the intersection between the two stadiums included: "Thank you, Eli!" "One more win to go!" "Who needs two?" and, of course, "New York sucks!" The most popular sign was a newspaper placard reading "Beat NY" and with all of the red-and-green being worn simultaneously, Christmas references were in surplus.
Said a guy on a Sunday morning news show: "If the Eagles and Phillies both win today, it'll be waaaaay better than Christmas."
