Big League Stew - MLB

In anticipation of either the Phillies or Yankees winning the World Series over the next two days, the Associated Press has moved a feature on the topic of baseball players wearing goggles during clubhouse champagne celebrations.

It's mostly full of fans complaining that if you're going to pop the bubbly, you should man up and avoid the damage with a time-honored flinching and a closing of the eyes that will come too late and do nothing.

But writer Jocelyn Noveck also took the time to call up a doctor to get an interesting medical explanation — past the usual "it's alcohol in your eyes, dummy"  — for why baseball players don protective eyewear while engaging in various title parties.

From the Associated Press:

"Talk to an eye doctor, though, and you'll be converted to the pro-goggle side with the speed of one of (CC) Sabathia's fastballs.

"Champagne has a high alcohol content, high enough to damage the surface lining of the cornea, says Dr. Matthew Gardiner, director of emergency ophthalmology services at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. (For those medically inclined, the lining is called the epithelium.)

"'A corneal abrasion like that usually heals within two to three days, but it can be extremely painful while it's healing," says Gardiner.'"

The Corneal Abrasions. Sounds like a great name for a punk band.

I can't say that I blame ballplayers for protecting their multi-million dollar eyes from the dangers of the champagne spray. Hitting a fastball in the World Series is tough enough ... why make it tougher with burning epitheliums from an ALCS postgame scrum?

digg delicious

I have a feeling if the Yankees win, Jeter and A-Rod will wear their respective goggles home to pop each other's champagne bottle.

You know, J ta the P, those who say psychologists have determined that people who constantly use homosexual references as put-downs are either bigoted homophobic racist-types or closet homosexuals themselves, either are little ignorant pious pricks or openly homosexual.

You go Yankees! Way to spend nearly a half billion dollars to win a world series. Great season Phillies, thanks for playing with heart. (Phillies payroll just under $145 million)

Sorry BRIAN, but if you had your payroll like the Yankees, I'm sure you wouldn't spend it like we did. Besides, the Yankees played with more heart than I've seen this season. They deserved this because the player's really did play like world champions.

To all the fans that hate the Yankees, let me say this, what are your owners doing to bring a World Championship to your home? Do they care about you as a fan to put out the best team possible at all cost? The Yankees do, what about yours?

and andy pettitte is one of the classiest guys in all of baseball. i may risk being called a pious homosexual but i chuckled at the comment by TCM, and would only ask derek and A-rod to go easy on mister texeira - he may still be a virgin. chase utley tieing reggie's world series HR record still has me in awe.

To John A. I don't think the Marlins are crying about their World Championships with their small payroll. As for the Pirates, Padres, and Nationals, nobody told them to squander their money on mediocre talent, pocket the money they received from the luxury tax (thanks mainly to the Yankees as a matter of fact), fail to develop top-flight minor league talent and deal them for only half their value, and not doing what they can to bring in wins, because all that matters to them are profits not victories. You reap what you sow. You get what you give. The Yankees earned it by investing back into their product, and putting in the best possible product for their fan base. If other teams and owners are willing to do that, it would be a more level playing field than what it is now. Teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Dodgers, and Angels shouldn't be ashamed for wanting to spend to spend to produce a winner. It is teams like the Pirates, Royals, Nationals, and Padres should be ashamed and embarrassed for the product they produce and little investment they take to bring them a winner. You should be screaming at your owners saying, 'The Yankees are doing everything they can to win, what about you? Where's my money going?' Demand better, demand for higher expectations.

Congrats to the Yankees organization, their families, and their fans.
As a New Yorker and a Yankee fan I'm ever amazed at all those who are not satisfied with just cheering for their team, but must concurrently hate another team.
It must be low self esteem on the part of these individuals; possibly even a sense of failure in their life.
All of this toxic talk about the Yankees' player compensation is quite foolish; folks this is capitalism.
The last time I looked, although not perfect, capitalism is much better than any alternative.
Please review what the Yankees ownership paid for the team and what its worth today; quite the ROE (that's return on investment).
So if you feel, in your heart of hearts, that you must hate a team, then seek professional help.
Also, congrats to the Phillies on a great season.

Love, Love, Love them YANKEEES! You go Guys, I don't know why the Phillies thought they had a chance against the YANKEEES. Then again I have to say that they tried, they can try again next year, didn't they know, NOT IN THE YANKEE'S HOUSE, WERE NOT HAVING THAT!
