Big League Stew - MLB

Even if the actual game remains in limbo, at least there's already been one winner declared from Monday's suspended World Series game.

With temperatures plummeting and a cold rain falling at Philly's Citizens Bank Park, some of the Phillies and Rays players opted for the "Elmer Fudd" look, wearing specially made caps with built-in ear flaps.

As one might have expected, the team from Florida leaned toward the warm comfort a little more with Carl Crawford, B.J. Upton, Jason Bartlett and Evan Longoria sporting them on the field and manager Joe Maddon (right) wearing one in the dugout. Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins, meanwhile, wore them for the Phillies.

The caps are manufactured by New Era, baseball's official cap supplier. They came out during this year's spring training but weren't used on the field until Monday — on baseball's biggest stage, no less. (Fun fact: In the Midwest, they're called "Stormy Kromers.")

With a curious national audience looking on, there's no doubt in my mind they'll be a hot winter-time item, especially in Philadelphia (though not as much in St. Petersburg). New Era's website has no details on how to order one, but it's most likely only a matter of time until we can.

There are, after all, only 59 shopping days left until Christmas.

What do you think of baseball's "Elmer Fudd" hats? Yay or nay?

I dont like them, be men, tough it out. I played so of my college games while it was snowing. Just like two years ago at the begining of the season, there will be some cold games, but it doesnt mean there needs to be a new dress code.

I thought Joe Maddon was an old, Elmer-type guy anyway. It's amazing he's only 54. He looks like he's at least 64. Probably what contributed were the years Tampa Bay was in the basement. That probably could stress anyone out and if you don't act it out on the field you tend to take it home with you or allow it to manifest itself. Thank You, Dr. Phil.

I think Joe Maddon is a classy guy. The Phillies could take a few lessons from the Rays when it comes to being good sports. We lost and lost big but still hope to come back and finish it in Florida. I love baseball but the fans can reallly be hateful. It just shows that they are acting like spoiled children. So Phillies, cheer for your team because you have a great team but don't make the other team and their families feel like dirt. After all they got just as far in the playoffs as you did. Grow up, so we can respect you as a great team and great fans.

Depends on where and how you wear it. In Arizona it would be a big no,no, cause its hot. But back in Philly when its cold out I don't see why the players, coaches, or fans need to get sick....so for back east I say yeah if you really do get cold.

Hey, let's call these things what they really are, "stormy kromers" out in the midwest, but "Wussy hats" when they're worn out on the ball field. What a bunch of overpaid wussies ! Thank God I was never good enough to become an MLB player, er uhm, WUSSY. Hey look, I'm not saying that about all the players but come on, imagine if Manny Ramirez was in the world series this year ! They'd probably invent some female lookin headband rain hat thingy to protect his overpaid locks ! what a joke. I draw the line there and not wearing these hats seperates the boys from the girls. ! LOL

Heck yes. I can't believe a bunch of "men" are complaining that it looks stupid. Since when do "real men" care how they look? Anyway, these don't even look that bad. It's funny to see some people's aversions to change. And good point by bella-cheat hater. Especially considering baseball is not a winter weather sport, and they are way up north, I say why not? And I freaking hate cold ears.
