It appears that Singh, who usually does not take more than two weeks off during the season, is going to have a three-week break before playing in the British Open at Royal Birkdale. The big man from Fiji decided not to play in the AT&T National this week after finishing in a tie for 12th last year at Colonial. There is a chance he could play next week in the Barclays Scottish Open, which he played six consecutive years through 1995 when he was a full-time member of the PGA European Tour, but he had not committed as of last weekend. Possibly that's because he missed the cut twice and never finished better than a tie for 20th at Loch Lomond, posting final rounds of 77 and 79 the last two times he played in the tournament. If Singh is not going to play competitively until reaching Royal Birkdale, he will be coming off one of his best performances of the year, a fifth-place finish in the Travelers Championship, where he posted four rounds in the 60s for the first time this season. That gave him his fifth finish in the top 10 and 10th in the top 25 this season, but he still is stuck on 31 PGA Tour victories. Singh has not won since the Arnold Palmer Invitational more than a year ago but has finished second three times since, including a playoff loss to Steve Lowery in February at Pebble Beach. |
