Golf-Camera-shy Tiger blocks out shattering shutters in Shanghai

By Nick Mulvenney

SHANGHAI, Nov 5 (Reuters) - World number one Tiger Woods made a solid start to the WGC-HSBC Champions on Thursday despite the distraction of being pursued by a huge crowd of snap-happy locals following his every move.

Crowd behaviour has improved since Woods made his first appearance in China eight years ago, when stiletto-heel wearing fans charged across the greens in chaotic scenes at the Mission Hills club in Shenzhen.

It was clear on Thursday, however, that not everyone in the packed gallery following Woods in the opening round of his third tournament in Shanghai was familiar with the etiquette of watching golf.

“There’s certainly a lot of people out there,” Woods told reporters after shooting a five-under-par 67 to stand three shots behind early leader Nick Watney.

“There was a lot of people… moving and things. We had to stay focused.

“I think it’s a disadvantage because there are so many people with cameras here. The other groups probably don’t have to deal with it as much as we do.”

PHOTO SEQUENCE

The problems started at Woods’s opening hole when cameras clicked and whirred as the 14-times major champion played his first tee shot in front of more than a thousand spectators.

“The guy in the grandstand basically did a photo sequence. I flinched on it and hit it straight to the right,” the 33-year-old added.

Despite finding the rough, Woods managed to recover for a par but the problems did not stop there, as Ross Fisher, his British playing partner, explained.

“It took us a while to get into it, because it was very difficult to focus and concentrate because there were so many cameras going off,” said the Englishman, fresh from his World Match Play triumph in Spain on Sunday.

“I think even the first hole, I backed off my second shot twice, three times, and heard cameras go off in swings and everything.

“So it was difficult, it was tough mentally,” added Fisher, who finished with a two-under-par 70 for a share of 21st. It did not really improve until seventh hole, Woods said, but it was something he had come to expect playing in countries where the game was still underdeveloped.

“There’s no history (in China) yet,” he said. “The populous has not played golf long enough to understand yet, that takes time.

“There’s a lot of countries we’ve played in that are the same way, but over time as they get more experience and more people playing the game and really understanding what the game is all about, then it doesn’t happen as much.” (Editing by John O’Brien; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

For those who think they know it all, I have one suggestion, go find a club, any club, a bucket of golf balls and an erea the size of a football field ans start swinging away, then, and only then will you have the knowledge and understanding why Tiger Woods is so good at what he does and why he can buy and sell YOU many times over.....oh, and by the way.......good luck....

I'm Chinese and I agree with Tiger. The crowd needs to adhere to common golf courtesy and shut the @#$% up!

Golf is like every other sport, there is a rhythm and any sudden unexpected noise will throw off that rhythm. Baseball, football, bowling, tennis, golf. If you blew an airhorn close to a field goal kickers position right when he goes to kick the ball, I bet that would throw him off. Golf and bowling are quieter games so a quieter noise is just as startling. You could say this all comes with being famous, but you also could say there is a certain etiquette to each game that is expected.

Go golfing with anyone and make a noise on their backswing and you will get the evil eye, if not more than that. Go Tiger

It's obvious by the comments who and who hasn't played golf. To play at the level of the pros, concentration is key to their success. Those who can consistently strike the ball cleanly without any variance in the angle of attack make the big bucks. The others fade away to their local golf courses trying to pick up some spare change. I admit that I sometimes cringe at Tiger and Steve's over the top reaction to a camera click, certainly much more than any other player on tour. But I understand...don't forget that caddy Steve picks up a cool $1.8 million a year because Tiger hits the ball so cleanly. I'd holler too. So I think that Tiger is handling it OK by not screaming at the unknowledgeable Chinese fans. Education is the key here. Think about the klutzes in the audience that clap between symphonic movements. About all the conductor can do is smile wryly at his orchestral members and quietly shake his head in disapproval.

If you have not played golf or are not familiar with the rules and etiquette of the game it all sounds like players are prema donas. However, all golfers, from young children to the beer belly, tee shirt, having a hell of a good time players, know that there are certain things that you cannot do when playing the game. There is a certain behavior that you have. It is a gentlemen's (or ladies) game. One that teaches beginners how to keep your own score, that you are responsible for being honest in you score, that you behave and dress in a certain way. If you watch the game, you will see (99.9%) of the time, there is no foul language, if a player is in doubt of a rule he will call over a "judge" for a ruling, players are always neat in their appearance, and unlike other sports, very few, if any, are in the headlines for crude behavior, drugs, etc. When it comes to the Olympics, you will see nothing changed.

If you have played golf, you will know that even "regular joes" tend to keep quiet when someone's teeing off. It's just common golf courtesy. Thinking that this is about one person's vanity just shows how ignorant and envious you are. Hit the links, play the game, before you cast your ignorant post...

    agreed with p.
Pro-golfers should practice at the range with their caddies clicking photos during their backswings, so they could get used to it.

I hope as the Olympics roll around and more countries are exposed to the game people will become more educated on the protocol of watching golf. Tiger and whoever is playing alongside him are pros so I'm sure they'll tough it out and do just fine.Good luck Tigerrrr.

I guess there are no comments here, because "what on earth can you say". It sounds like Mr. Woods would complain if he were hung with a "new" rope. If the world does not bow down and scrape to him it it rotten. If the whole worl is taking his picture, that's rotten, too. Get a life Mr. Woods and be grateful that you have a world of fawning fans to adore you.
