Devil Ball Golf - Golf

The Presidents Cup is in the books now, and for an event that had almost no buzz going in, it ended up being an exercise in serious star power. Phil Mickelson served as mentor to the youngsters, Michael Jordan co-captained the U.S. team, oh, and this guy:

It's a too-neat storyline to say that Tiger Woods beat Y.E. Yang as revenge for the PGA Championship ... but it's also dead-on. I told you Tiger would decisively take down Yang; I just didn't expect it would be so soon.

More Presidents Cup postmortems coming throughout the day. Tiger Woods, y'all!

Tiger beat kid barely 18 and a guy who admits may never win on the pga again. Think you should be giving more credit to Stricker.

I agree with Kelly G's comment above regarding Stricker. Really, Tiger did not play all that well Saturday...Stricker really carried him in both matches and they really got a huge gift from Mike Weir missing the birdie putt on 17. Even with Tiger's great second shot on 18, that should have been for a halve at best and not to win the match. That was really the match that killed the International team, IMO.
Some other personal observations of mine over the weekend:
    1) Just about everybody seems to like Fred Couples...I love his golf swing, but there's something about him that irritates me. I'm not sure if it's that I view him as a major underachiever during his career; if it's that I find him to be somewhat of a "phony," despite all that we hear about him being such a "great guy"; or if it's that we hear so many people saying what a great guy he is...there's just something about Couples that rubs me the wrong way.
    2) I got sick of seeing and hearing about Michael Jordan, his golf game, and his role on the U.S. Team very quickly. I guess the Internationals should have made Pele an assistant captain so he could have taught them how to dribble the ball onto the green and kick it into the cup.
    3) Additionally, I wonder what some of the U.S. players REALLY thought of having Jordan as an assistant captain. I know there were some positive quotes about Jordan and all, but I wonder what someone like Kenny Perrry, for example, thought about it.
    4) Regardless of points and the outcome, I still think the best player on either side was Tim Clark of the Internationals. He reminded me of what Seve Ballesteros used to be for the Europeans during the Ryder Cup...just played well regardless of the format and the situation.
    5) I enjoyed watching the matches overall, but I still feel that the Internationals need to start beating the Americans semi-regularly or the Presidents Cup will continue to lag behind the Ryder Cup in ratings and quality. The Internationals need to find their Tony Jacklin as a captain, someone who can rally them and convince them that they can and will defeat the Americans, even on U.S. soil. Despite the final margin, I really don't think the Americans were really all that superior to the Internationals in terms of talent and ability. Even yesterday, there for a bit, it looked like the Internationals had a shot to pull out the victory.
    6) Really a great and classy move yesterday by Vijay Singh to agree to halve the 18th hole and his match with Lucas Glover. Great sportsmanship on Vijay's part...made me realize again why I love golf so much!

Steve Stricker played great with Tiger. The two like each other and their games complement each other in match play. There is something to be said about how the number one player in the world can affect the play of a teamates and opponents. Stricker is a great player too.I have yet to hear how Stricker fared without Tiger.Tiger was lights out Sunday. Give a little respect to the number one player on the planet. Great job Americans!! Remember this was a team competition.

The fact of the matter is that Woods only had his B game against Yang. Can you imagine what would have happened if he had his A game? Once Woods gets his drive back on track, assuming that happens, it will kill the theory that on any given day, anyone can win. That just wont happen. Drive on track: Woods. Putting on track: Woods. Chipping on track: Woods. Driving, putting and chipping on track: No point in others even showing up.

What is it that prompts people to try and lower the status of great athletes like Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan? I just don't understand why anyone would want to undermine the great abilities these athletes have. Regardless of how well or not so well Tiger played at the presidents cup, he still gave the American team the final putt to win the match. He and Michael, are human beings who have learned how to tap into a tremendous focus element that you or I can only dream of attaining. They deserve respect and admiration for that, at least. These 2 men epitomize the games they played and achieved goals that put them in the history books forever. I don't believe it is right to worship any human being on this planet, but lets get off our Egotistical behinds, and give them the credit that is due them. I'd like to see the person who "puts down" these 2 great athletes, get out there and do what they have done. Many great men have come into this world who have done many great things to improve this planet. Instead of putting them down, maybe we should focus on doing our part to make this world a better place to live!

What makes me sick is watching the telecast, you thought tiger beat the international team single handed. In fact, the Americans would have won without tiger help at all!
