Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Welcome to the fall season, friends, where we're so starved for good golf news and info that a mindless popoff by a frustrated golfer has become a major news story.

After getting waxed on Sunday in the singles matches of the Presidents Cup, Robert Allenby accused Anthony Kim of being a boozing party hound who's living a wild life unbecoming of a golf professional. (How Allenby justifies getting beaten by a guy he claims was an all-night raver remains unanswered.)

The PGA Tour took the unusual step of issuing a statement decrying the kerfluffle (how's that for a journalistic term?), which only served the purpose of adding more kindling to the fire:

"Concerning the reports published after the fact with unfortunate comments attributed to Robert regarding Anthony (emphasis added), we understand that both players have since spoken and have put the incident behind them," said Rick George, VP/COO of the PGA Tour. Combined with Allenby's contention that his comments were "taken out of context," the implication here is that this is the fault of the writers who initially reported this story, and not Allenby just being a sore loser.

Nice try. Geoff Shackelford did some digging and found that four reporters heard the comments, and one has them on tape. Allenby was given the chance to confirm that he meant what he said -- which is rarely done, and is an exceedingly gracious offer to Allenby -- but Allenby stood by what he said, including the part where Allenby compared Kim to John Daly.

I agree with the prevailing sentiment that everybody should've just let this one die, and it would've been forgotten within hours, particularly with Balloon Boy dominating the next few news cycles. I'm on record as saying golf could use a little more life in it, and Allenby's quotes certainly qualify. Anthony Kim seems like he can handle himself just fine, both during the nightlife and in the media.

It's interesting to note, as SI's Gary Van Sickle tweeted, that there have been no denials that Kim was actually out that late. And what's even more interesting is that nobody's bothered to apologize to John Daly. Now that's just rude.

I play golf about twice a month, in my foursome we have one hack (115 avg) myself (98-105, still rather hackish) and two middle-80's guys.
One of the better golfers hits the booze with a passion on the golf course, to the point where he is no longer aloud to drive the cart (he hit a tree once). Guess what? I don't blame my inability to beat him on the booze and I don't act like a freaking child when I love $30 bucks a month to him (we play for $10 a round and an additional $5 for straight-up winning)...
Its a shame that a Professional such as Allenby can't do the same thing. His comments make him look like a fool compared to what he was going for, embarrassing Kim.
Smooth Allenby, hopefully you play in the Byron or the Colonial next year (I go to both) so I can ridicule you in between holes...

You are right, Jay. He should show a little love to JD. JD was home, nursing his rib injury and never trashed Allenby. Seems that Allenby got all upset when people said unkind things about him in Australia. I don't see the logic in turning around and doing that to someone else. Then again, he did get waxed by a guy who may have been out at a rave all night, may have had a lot to drink, may have been walking sideways and still won with what I would guess is a terrific hangover. Hopefully, nobody actually takes any of it too seriously and they can all get back to work.

Allenby isn't even liked in his own country because of this type of immature behavior. I know AK struggled this year and maybe it is attributable to alcohol abuse. Who knows? The point is, if he is so concerned with how Golf pros are supposed to act, he should just remove his hat, shake AK's hand, and congratulate him on a great round. Sore loser P.O.S.!

Why all of a sudden to defend A. Kim ! ?
He ought to tell the truth about the whole affair instead of being
devious. ! As for Allenby 's comments about A. Kim being like
' John Daly ' is a bit unfair and unkind . If I were at my age at 25 to 27,
I would go to an hotel bar and down a few beers ! And then go straight
to bed . What is wrong with that ! ? NOTHING ! But the inference to the
John Daly went a BIT TOO OVERBOARD ! Once more the Golf Channel
recently said that the parents had verified that they took their son to the hotel room !
So here is the story getting all TWISTED UP and making the gossip web pages
unfortunately ! It is a very sorry and sad affair between one young KID and a wise ass VETERAN !

The reason this is still an issue is that the media will NEVER let anything run its natural course. In all likelihood, this was NOT newsworthy to begin with, much less capture attention enough to hang around this long. It is a little like 6th grade antics.

Anthony Kim has nothing to defend , and if you don't like the guy just say it , but if you don not know who he is personally just keep your comments to yourself , and besides he beat the crap out of the sore loser Robery Allenby , the Tour should fine the loser for making such false statements , so if you don't know what really happen keep quiet !

In my mind, the two most touching moments in golf are Crenshaw breaking down after winning the Masters the week after Harvey Pennick's funeral and John Daly doing the same into Mrs. Bush's arms after winning the Houston Open. If John's good enough for Mrs. Bush, he's good enough for me...
Not too long ago, the tour players were being criticized for being a bunch of clones. You just can't please everyone and it's futile to try. Have fun and be yourself and if that's not good enough for someone...screw 'em...

You guys are all getting a good laugh out of this. However, there is one obvious difference between Anthony Kim and John Daly. Anthony Kim keeps himself in top athletic shape. There seem to be few extra pounds. It seems unlikely he is as much of a booze hound as Allenby said. It seems more likely that Allenby was upset about being beaten by a guy who didn't even care enough to get what Allenby considered the proper rest before his match.
In Kim's defense, he had been playing badly most of the week. Couples benched him on Saturday morning. He may just have been a bundle of nerves because this was his first President's Cup. Couples may have even suggested that he needed to loosen up a little. He may have suggested a few drinks couldn't hurt. Whether Couples suggested it or not, it is clear that Kim played better after he "loosened up" the night before. Saying he's now John Daly seems a bit over the top.

We need the good old days when half the pro golfers were big fat guys. No one cared about physical
fitness except Ben Hogan & Gary Player. After all, half of golf is just rolling a ball across a nice short
piece of lawn. There were guys like Billy Casper, Bobby Locke, and going back to Walter Hagen....guys
who were great players and on the fat side. How about Jack Nicklaus in his 20's, or Ray Floyd, you know,
guys who were a little chubby. Give me some time and I could come up with many more. Like I said, half of
golf is rolling the ball in the hole and the ball and hole don't care if you're fat or if you stayed out all night.
Come to think of it, Ben Hogan smoked like crazy....so that leaves Gary Player.

Every body likes to cut lumber out of a fallen tree. this is nothing out of usual stuff, there are some grievances that aren't worth the ink, rememeber the Lefty, Tiger issue of winnnin while using ingerior equipment, that didn't go far, did it? So why all this garbage, leave them guys to settle their grudges by themselves, no need to be aireing this any further.

Has anybody other than me noticed that Kim seems to have lost a considerable amount of weight recently? I didn't watch the President's Cup coverage wire-to-wire, so if one of the announcers mentioned it, I may have missed their comments. Anyhow, the kid looks like a ghost of himself. His face looked half the size it was a few months ago and his sweater appeared to be hanging off his thin frame. If this weight loss is intentional, I can't say it looks good -- actually kind of scary. Is there some medical issue we haven't heard about?

So, why didn't anyone call out AK when he bailed out of being the unofficial host of the Bob Hope because he was out completely sh!t f@ced the night before with all of his Desert buddies. He'd been throwing his diamond watch in the air, fell while standing on a table, and withdrew. Where was DevilBall then? All year the golf media makes excuses for this 'kid'. Well, old habits dies hard and JD also was f'ing around at 24. As far as the weight loss, well he bragged about how much he ran when he weighed 25 lbs heavier, so what changed? Well, he's from L.A. and his fired caddie has quite a history. Even in my college days the only guys I knew who could stay out 'til 4 AM, then get up for anything were dipping their beaks in nose candy. *Purely speculation, of course.
