Michael Sim has been playing this year's Nationwide Tour like a man among boys -- and not the kind of boys that can outdrive Tiger Woods, either. He won himself a battlefield promotion to the PGA Tour after winning three Nationwide events, and so it's no surprise that he's running away with the Nationwide Championship, too.

Okay, "running away" may be a little premature -- we're only one day in, after all -- but what else can you say about a guy who runs off eight straight birdies? Sim set a course record and now has a three-stroke lead on the field at the championships, held at Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. And he very nearly tied the Tour's record of nine straight birdies, set by Omar Uresti at the 1994 Shreveport Open. Sim's putt on 12 stopped just inches short of the cup.

It's a fitting capper to a memorable 2009 for Sim, once the No. 1 amateur in the world and already the Nationwide Tour's all-time single-season money winner. Adios, Nationwide; it's PGA next year for Sim.

A second major storyline of this tournament is the fact that the top 25 money winners for the season get their PGA Tour cards for next year, which means that the guys on the bubble will be looking to make a charge. It's going to be a nervewracking weekend for a lot of folks, but with his Tour card in hand and a championship in sight, Sim looks like he could be free and clear from all the drama.

It seems unfortunate that a 'battlefield promotion' and a top 25 on the money list have the same result. I would think that the promotion would mean we would have seen him for the remaining tournaments of the year. I suppose that the list of players may have been set already, but they should have a provision in place for someone who does get promoted.

He has played in some PGA events. Unfortunately, when he won his 3rd tourney, which got him the 'battlefield promotion, the Fed Ex Cup playoffs were starting. Since he wasn't eligible for that, he couldn't play in any of the Fed Ex Cup events. He played in the Turning Stone event 2 weeks ago, finished tied for 55th, and he is in the field for the Viking Classic next week and Children's Miracle Network Disney event the week after that.

We were just commenting in another article, of the seedy way some of the players are starting to look...I think I have at least one answer...they play so many weeks in a row, that when they take a week off, they sleep right through their hair cut appointments..remember the days when only women had pony tails?? How much do safety razors cost these days??? I have used an electric for over 65 years, so I have no Idea...Does anyone else besides me remember the old Burma Shave signs along the highways with those one liners ?? When traveling with the parents as a kid, we always were on the lookout for them...that and the old RED BARNS with tire ads painted on the roof...ahhh, the good old days...shave, get your hair cut and shine your shoes...STUB
