Devil Ball Golf - Golf

There's a well-worn but still true saying in poker that if you can't spot the sucker at your table in the first half-hour, you are the sucker. I don't doubt Greg Norman has played a lot of poker in his life, and probably very well, but he still strikes me as the kind of guy who'd go all in with a great hand but forget that a flush beats a straight.

Which is why I'd like to see Norman captain the International team again in Australia. No, not because I think he'd shoot himself in the foot -- although I do -- but because I'd like to see Norman finally get his shot at redemption.

Look, it's tough to feel sorry for Norman; the guy owns property and businesses that have brought him a nine-figure fortune. His "job" is playing golf. Even so, he's got to be Exhibit A for why golf's a cruel, heartless mistress. We don't need to even give his Masters disaster more than a passing reference, but he was in the hunt at last year's British Open until the last few holes, another of the many times everything has aligned for Norman ... and everything has fallen apart.

This Presidents Cup, Norman had the opportunity to transition smoothly into an elder-statesman role ... and, unfortunately, he dropped the opportunity as if it was greased. His captain's pick of Adam Scott was strange but, in some backward way, defensible if you figure that maybe he was trying to restart Scott's career.

But then came the matches themselves, and Norman appeared completely overmatched. The U.S. built a strong lead, and Norman responded by sending out some of his weakest players to both start and wrap the Sunday singles matches. It was a peculiar move, but utterly characteristic of Norman.

Here's the thing. I don't bear the guy any ill will; hell, I'm jealous as heck of the guy. Still, I'd like to see him finish his career as something more than a punch line, something more than just the guy who gets brought up, along with the 2004 Yankees and Jean Van De Velde, whenever "choking" gets mentioned.

So I want him to get another shot at captaining the Internationals. Learn from your mistakes, Greg. Bring on some lunatic golfers that nobody's seen on these shores, and throw in a few celebs to get the blood pumping. You can do it, Shark. Just don't think too much about it.

I think you guys give a lot of credit to someone like Norman who is a confirmed choker. When Tiger lost to YE at the PGA, everyone were quick to push the "C" gear forward. And now, this fawning for an "Australian" International Team captain!!! There were already 2 Australians in the team, why did he have to pick the lousy Adam Scott? Would it not have made sense to pick someone like Jeev Milka Singh and have a Singh-Singh foursome/four-ball? Oh, but I forgot that Australians hate India and Indians. Something to do with race, maybe?

Simple fact is - that the US would have won no matter what Norman did. They simply have the better players at the moment.
I have a better idea. Let's have YOU captain the team -- and we'll see how things work out.

You're right #2 - Norman is a racist. That's why he had Singh, and two Asian guys on his team. I'm certain now that you're right. You've probably even met Greg in person.

HOLLER..I think you have it right...Let some of the posters here, captain the team...That would at least identify those who really know golf, and those that just like to think they do whilst in their favorite position...Prone on the couch balancing a beer can and chip bag on their stomachs.. Sudha...why bring in the hate card? we're talking important stuff here, and you go and ruin it...boy, that sucks...now that thats cleared up, lets give Norman another chance...Hell, everyone deserves another chance...Didn't Michael Vick just get one???,,,STUB

Not that i agree with comment from #2 that Greg Norman is a racist.... but YE Yang and Vijay Singh qualified on their own... so even if Greg was a racist... he couldn't have thrown them off the team
Poster #2 - First sign of someone being a racist is when they bring "race" into conversation where it doesn't belong. You injected race into your comments without cause or relevance. What is happening to Indians in Australia should not happen but has no relevance in Golf.

#6 I agree it has nothing to do with golf. But race is a huge issue in Australia. You can not comprehend how bad the situation in Australia is for Indians. Norman picking Adam Scott also had nothing to do with golf. He seemed like the odd man out, it was pathetic watching him play.

Greg Norman is a diva of the worst kind. He's rude, selfish, greedy and incredibly ego centric. He quit the tour early to seek his fortune, has given nothing back and you want to give this guy another chance. Take it up with his sonn-to-be-ex.

I can't believe half you chokers are giving responses like you know the guy personally and know what he does in return for the game. Before Tiger the shark was by far the interesting player on the tour and I'm sure he attracted his fare share of sponsorship. As for choking I bet if any of you had to play only a few holes with only 1 grand of your own money on the line you and your shaky hands would take the gas in a second... i'd even bet you've all choked on a 3 footer over 5 bucks at you local goat track!!.... passing judgement like a bunch of noble kings.

He simply picked the wrong players the first time. If Greg Norman ever gets a chance for redemption, he should pick Roger Federer and Raffy Nadal. They probably play better golf than some of those international guys... LOL!!

I just read all 19 of these comments and the only one that should even be allowed to be posted is number 9 by DF. His posting is to the point with some facts. To hold the #1 position in the world for 331 weeks, 6.365 years, I would not be calling that person a choker. Jack Nicklaus came in second place an awful lot of times. Would you call him a "choker" ?

Norman had a couple of majors stolen from him. He didnt choke. With that said, what was he thinking about picking Adam Scott. He had a terrible year and Greg thought he would come out of it this week.. I could be wrong but I have a feeling that his daughter is dating Scott. Only logical reason.

Norman is a class act, super successful on so many fronts. You are an idiot. If you were 1/100th as good a sports journalist as he was a golfer and businessman you might write some interesting analysis from time to time. If you are going to pick on somebody focus on Rush Limbaugh or somebody who deserves it.
