Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Here's a little thought exercise for your Monday. Just imagine what would happen if:

Kenny Perry had drained a par putt on the 18th at Augusta.

Phil Mickelson hadn't misfired on the 15th at Bethpage.

Tom Watson had curled in a putt on the 18th at Turnberry.

Y.E. Yang hadn't cleared the tree on the 18th at Hazeltine.

Imagine what would have happened if Perry, Mickelson, Watson and Tiger Woods had captured the majors this year. Has there ever been a greater cross-section of major winners in a single year? Could you imagine a year in which a Tiger major would have been, at most, the third-best story of the year?

Here's my take on what would have happened. Kenny Perry would have become a hero to weekend hackers everywhere, proof that golf stardom can come even to those in their late 40s. Then Mickelson would have followed up with the most touching story of the year, perhaps the decade, with a U.S. Open win for his ill wife. After that, Tom Watson would have delivered the best sports story in years by winning the British Open. And finally, Woods' win would have been an anticlimax, but after his British Open cut a reminder that nobody should doubt Tiger.

Alas, it wasn't to be. The story of golf is always the battle between star power and a good tale, and in 2009 we got plenty of good tales -- but at the expense of star power. We'll almost certainly never see this star-crossed collection of potential major winners all together again.

Many observers are saying this was the worst season for majors in recent memory. Not so; this was as good as it gets. But sometimes the ball doesn't quite go where you want it to, and sometimes the story doesn't end the way you want it to. Still -- and taking nothing away from Angel Cabrera, Lucas Glover, Stewart Cink and Yang -- it's kind of cool to imagine what could have been, yes?

It was a good year for golf. Four unexpected winners who played great and deserved the wins. Was really hoping Tom Watson had won his 6th Open though.
    2010 Major Winners,
    Tiger (2)
    Stricker
    And
    Phil or Vijay or Furyk

Jay I think IMHO, Kenny Perry has the most touching story of this decade in golf (right now). Both parents with long term illnesses and he just, (loss his mom)!

Nah, Akeen/Post #2, you got it wrong; I'M the guy who likes men, you homophobic, ignorant, two-toothed inbred trailer trash hillbilly...
The only thing we know about Go Chargers is that he's a knowledgable golf fan.
The only thing we know about you is that you're still living in your mommy's/sister's basement and fellating your grandpa.
    Now, back to this column
I generally enjoy Busbee's writing, but this particular column seemed pointless, and somewhat boring.
I think that it'll be Woods, Stricker, Harrington winning majors next year...yeah, I think that one of these guys (maybe Stricker?) will win two.

After this year, who knows for sure what next year will bring in the majors? Please- no more WHAT IFS- they don't mean squat. It would have been absolutely wonderful to see Watson win the British again. 2010 should be a great year. Hopefully, the tour will retain sponsors, and will be successful overall. Looking forward to the competition.

The season was what it was and the best players for those rounds won. At the end of the day, it's about quantity and while Y.E. Yang has done a lot to pump up Asian interest in golf, he won't be global until he grasp the english language (not bias, reality), and more importantly, due to all the unsuspected winners in 2009, I look forward to 2010 with relish.
If TIGER like's nothing more it's being counted out and NAYSAYERS.............gotta love it

    Akeen -
Successful people don't compare their accomplishments to that of others....they evaluate what they have already accomplished and then determine what measures need to be taken to improve the next time around.
I thought like you once. I equate your comments to the actions of a 5 yr. old wetting his/her mattress during nap time. Messy, a little uncomfortable to the one at fault but harmless in the end.
Usually I don't respond to comments posted on these blogs. I just enjoy reading them and getting a good laugh. But that is when I think there are adults dishing it back-and-forth. If your truly 15 yr old, you don't have enough experience in life to know what it takes to be successful. Concentrate on passing your driving test and getting your homework done and stay off the internet....
I'm sure your parents are proud of you.

What really would have been the story of the year, maybe century,. If I, a 20 handicap, won a major!! All of the major winners are professional golfers who have won before. They were good enough to have won again when it happened to be a major tournament.

Had Mickelson won the US Open, I don't know who would have had a dry eye in the crowd or from watching it on TV. And to think he was on his way to a record low Sunday round at Augusta as well. We can only hope.

I'll give you one more "what if". What if David Duval doesn't triple the third hole on the last day of the US Open?? Then he wins and it is a glorious story of never giving up and fighting your way back to the top!
