Devil Ball Golf - Golf

You know what women's golf needs? Right, rock-star intros for every player as they approach the first tee and the 18th green. ("Oh my God, that's ... that's Christina Kim's music!") Silly idea? Not if you're Anna Rawson, who offered up that and several other plans for saving women's golf in last night's ESPN: 360. Here, check it out:

Awesome! I love watching ADD-inducing shots of lady golfers! Anyway, Rawson -- not surprisingly -- tries to push hot n' sexy as the be-all, end-all of women's golf as part of her five-step plan to save the game:

1. Rock the tee -- the aforementioned baseball-batter-style intros. Yeah, that'll go over well.
2. Bring on the men -- Run men's and women's tournaments simultaneously on the same course. This is actually a pretty cool idea, and one that would help spur interest in the women's game without compromising the men's. No way in hell it'll ever happen, but it's a good idea nonetheless.
3. Fashion to the fairways -- Don't just play good (or "play well," to be grammatically correct), look good too. Nah, I like the burlap-sack man-shorts look. That really works.
4. Marketing is the boss -- True dat. Anybody who does anything in the LPGA without an eye for how it will play to the larger market isn't going to be long for a job.
5. Ready for our close-up -- A camera crew with every pairing? It's so crazy, it just might wo -- nah, probably not. But it's a nice idea anyway.

Crosscourt Birdies takes a comprehensive look at Ms. Rawson's proposals (hat tip: Waggle Room). Now it's your turn. Will any of these save women's golf, or are they just five more steps on the path toward stripper poles on every green?

Jay, you should use your contacts and create a new ladies golf tour to compete with the LPGA. Make it a worldwide tour with twenty stateside tournaments and the rest around the globe. And do not get the input from a single player. If they want to be 'independent contractors', allow that. If they wish to become investors, that is a different giraffe...
Commissioner Busbee. Has a nice ring...

LOL!...And Gene Simmons will use his fire breathing to bring some life back into them. :O
What the LPGA needs right now is a new commissioner that has vision, one that can not only save existing tournaments, but bring new tournaments in the fold.Sponsors are very hard to come by at this time, and the new commissioner has to be able to deal with this, because it is probably the first thing on his or her plate.
We all really know what is wrong with this tour, although it is improving, and that is exposure to the public.
Most people know who Michelle Wie is,but there are other good American players out there also, and they should be given the equal light as far as the coverage goes.
...And it is not that sex sells in this case...What you want to watch is good golf shots being made.. :)

What women's golf lacks is the excitement generated from great shotmaking skill such as booming drives and great escapes etc. But there is a way around this lack of excitement; more team match play events. The Lexus Cup, an annual Ryder Cup Asia vs The Rest of the World style event is the most exciting ladies event each year, not from unbelievable shotmaking, but from the drama of team match play. So the way to turn this into a regular and successful format is the creation of an LPGA Women's Golf League (WGL). Teams representing different cities compete to determine the national champions through league play, the same can be ongoing in Europe, Asia, and South America simultaneously, and then the winners from each region meet to determine the world champions. THis would be exciting and successful and sponsors would get on board!

If you want bigger pursues, more interest, play better golf or have better players. Hell, I drive the ball 270 and I'm a fifty year old man and shoot in the 70's without doing it for a living. I wouldn't come out to watch myself play, I watch the men play because they can do things I can only dream about. I watched some of the Evian tournament this past weekend and there are quite a few ladies that still fit that old image Anna got into trouble for speaking out about. It's hard to look at your own orgainzation, company without distortion, the LPGA needs an outside, impartial, objective observation. Good luck.

I think what you are getting here from Rawson is the European or Australian perspective on sexuality, on sport and on the human body. Everywhere in the world, except here, the human form is celebrated and look upon as a positive. You have a great body and great talent, show both because you have worked hard to get both. In America a woman is demeaned for being beautiful, women are demeaned by men for just about everything. Being a housewife is good and bad, being a career women is good and bad. You can't be just a housewife and marry a man that takes care of the financial responsiblities because then you're just someone looking for the money. You can't be a career women because men feel threaten and the first thing they ask is why haven't you had kids, whats wrong with you. The worst thing about all of this is that women are dumb enough to make the same arguments to each other! Why would a women on the LPGA tour say something to the effect of, "well, at the end of the day, are people respecting you for your game or for your looks and can you look at yourself in the mirror?" C'mon, are you kidding? The women that said that at the end of the segment was someone who probably hung her hat on one thing - her game, because she looked like hell. Well, Mrs. Rawson, could hang her hat on both and there is nothing wrong with that. If the LPGA were smart, they would start to look at women like those overseas look at women and say, "wow, she is so gorgeous and 90% men on the PGA Tour can't hold a candle to this kind of gorgeous, lethal beauty" In my opinion, there is no way the PGA should get more attention the LPGA and its the LPGA fault that they do. Sometimes, Women in America make no sense.

The idea that the men's and women's tournaments could run simultaneously is do-able. Look at women's tennis. All of the grand slams have women and men playing at the same time. That has done wonders for the women's game because it sends out the message that women's and men's tennis is of equal importance. I think ignoring or diminishing any women's sports is really stupid, because there's so much revenue to be made there, which brings more attention to the sport. You can create more stars, which brings in more endorsements, and more popularity to the sport. And I know that beautiful female athletes can create resentment or criticism, but hey, they do get more people watching. Look at Anna Kournikova.

WTF? Is this a joke? Sure, use sex to sell golf. Why not. But... wouldn't it work a lot better if you had someone sexy? What's the point of using one of those scrawny runway models? Especially one with a face on the homely side of plain? Who are they trying to attract to the game? Fashion designers? If you're trying to use sex appeal to sell golf, or anything for that matter, at least use someone with proper curves, and ideally someone who's also cute or pretty.

Women sports is for women and if women can't watch women play, well too bad. Every women sport is unwatchable: WNBA, Women hockey, baseball, boxing, rowing, curling, bike, tennis, athletics... everything. Besides gymnastics and maybe figure skating, everything else is plain bad.

Its about time women's golf got someone that is good looking and can help that sport. Most women I have seen in that sport have fat asses and boring plain jane looks! Maybe now Playboy can do an issue called "The Women of Pro-Golf".

The sports world are rules by a bunch of out dated men. They have no sense of style and grace and yet they all acting like they have lots of manners ( all fakes ). Why they make women dress in mens clothes when women play sports ( i.e. soccer, golf, volley ball etc.) and the worst is golf, they just don't dress up like low class men walk around Walmart stores, they also dress like ugly women in cheap T-shirts tuck in shorts that are buffy, fluffy, over the knees length. And the men dress up like some dude from the late 80's. And the stupid thing is they don't let you play golf if you dress more hip than that.

She turned to sports to deal with her feelings about her mother's suicide - but has she gotten professional help to deal with her inner feelings? Medicating with sports is not the solution. Anna ... you are a great female golfer looking towards a professional golf career. You have brains - not just beauty and will do well int he sport of golf.

What's the big deal. Another plain jane white girl playin golf. She's not so hot that i should be seeing her pop up on a headline while im trying to check my e-mail. Win a major tourney and then get a headline. 90% of Arab, Persian, Indian, and Latin women look hotter than her when they get out of bed in the morning, before they put on the make up and have their photos airbrushed.

'All sports are male dominated and still are.' The LPGA as well as numerous other sports (eg.Tennis, Track and Field) have moved forward to a point where people are slowly coming to the realization this is statment is NOT true. However until all sports are seen of equal value nothing will change. If a championship in any sport is played the format should be the same for both sexes (eg. Wimbledon) but the prize money MUST be the same for men and women. As womans sports grows I believe this will happen and the sooner the better. I am 'sports fan' and that should not come with a any gender distinction.

Look do not let strangers get inside your head. We all loved Micheal Jorden for years and we all understood he made more from endorsments then basketball. Do your best with both careerrs, have fun , live life, and good luck to you. (please ignore my spelling no spell check here), -- people are always envious of others, _ _ ............. do what makes you happy and gets you through this life. When it comes to any sports, bloke them out, concentrate, and in your case hit the ball......good luck. Dan Gamble

People should see this for what it is, she is not trying to raise the profile of the LPGA, but just trying to raise her own profile and further her own career by adding an extra-dimension to the game that she knows she can beat her opponents at, since she knows (and even admits) that she cannot beat them at golf alone. That's why so many other female golfers oppose the idea. I appreciate that she is honest about it though.
