Next Match: at home to Pescara, January 27 The new feel good factor around Sampdoria suffered blows both on and off the pitch this week, as a disappointing defeat was followed swiftly by the death of the club's owner, Riccardo Garrone. Samp boss Delio Rossi bemoaned his players' efforts in a 1-0 loss at Siena, saying: "We didn't do well and, paradoxically, we had chances to take the lead. Overall it was a bit lazy and I'm convinced that we can do better." The Blucerchiati may be struggling for numbers in attack but Rossi feels the whole team need to pull their weight. "I am convinced that this problem can be overcome through hard work," he added. "If we're tracking back then obviously we won't score. I don't think the lack of goals depends entirely on the strikers but on our approach to the game." News then broke that 76-year-old Garrone had passed away after a battle against illness. The honorary president of energry company ERG bought Samp from Enrico Mantovani in January 2002. Former Samp striker Antonio Cassano was just one of many who paid tribute to the club's late president, saying: "It's an excruciating pain, today is one of the ugliest and saddest of my life. He will be forever in my heart and I will love him forever." Juan Antonio and Renan will not face Pescara due to injury. Samp lost this fixture 3-1 last season, albeit the fact that both sides were in Serie B at the time. |
