Next Match: away to Juventus, January 26 Davide Ballardini became Genoa's third head coach of the season as he returned to the Marassi to replace Luigi Del Neri this week. The ex-Sampdoria paid the price for a run of nine defeats from 13 games and Ballardini knows the club well having guided the Rossoblu to a 10th-placed finish in the 2010-11 season. Things have changed, though, leading the 49-year-old to say: "The situation is different, compared to the past. There are members of the squad who have shown what they can do in the past but they need to show me more in the future. The goal is simple - play well as a team to get results." Ballardini has been presented with the challenge of guiding Genoa out of the relegation zone, where they currently occupy 17th place and lie three points from safety. "I don't know if this is 'mission impossible'," he added. "I will work that out in time. I must admit I'm ignorant as I've only seen Genoa play on TV. I'd like to point out that unless we play as a team and are solid, we will struggle to get results." Bosko Jankovic and Juan Vargas are unlikely to feature at Juventus due to injury, but Ballardini has an otherwise fit and suspension-free squad, with Chilean midfielder Felipe Seymour being allowed to join Chievo until the end of the season. Genoa lost the reverse fixture 3-1, with Ciro Immobile scoring the consolation goal, and the Grifone have not beaten Juventus since April 2009. Their last league victory away to the Bianconeri came in 1991. |
