Deportivo La Coruna missed the chance of securing a place in the Intertoto Cup after suffering a narrow defeat at Atletico Madrid last weekend. The Galician side is still in pole position for Spain's sole spot in the competition, though. Deportivo is two points clear of fellow applicant Athletic Bilbao with just one match remaining and will secure a place in the Intertoto with a tie at Villarreal on Sunday, thanks to a superior head-to-head record in the two games played against the Basques. However, should Mallorca overtake Racing Santander which has also applied for the Intertoto to finish sixth, the Cantabrian side will advance to the Intertoto instead of Deportivo. Antonio Barragan is sidelined for the rest of the season, but Andres Guardado is fit following a long spell on the sidelines and could feature against Villarreal.
