Riva has record 42 carries as Mustangs beat Golden Hawks 26-16
WATERLOO, Ont. - Nathan Riva ran for a record 42 times for yards as the Western Mustangs advanced to their third consecutive Yates Cup with a 26-16 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in Canadian Interuniversity Sport action Saturday.
The Mustangs will face the Queen's Golden Gaels, who defeated McMaster 32-6 in the other semifinal.
Riva's 42 attempts set the OUA single-game record. He scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter for Western against a Laurier defence that came into the game ranked second the OUA against the run.
Western amassed 547 yards of total offence and held the Golden Hawks to 252 yards.
Western quarterback and CIS all-time passing yardage leader Michael Faulds had an uncharacteristically modest day,but still put up 238 yards of passing, going 14-of-29 and leading Western to 25 first downs.
Darryl Wheeler added four field goals in the win.
Rookie Laurier quarterback Evan Pawliuk threw touchdown passes to Josh Bishop and Dillon Heap.
