Kelly Pavlik Looks for Redemption Against Aaron Jaco: Fan Reaction
Youngstown, Ohio native Kelly Pavlik shocked the boxing world back in 2007, winning the WBC and WBO middleweight titles with his seventh round TKO of Jermain Taylor. He then proved his win over Taylor wasn't a fluke, winning their 2008 rematch via unanimous decision.
Unfortunately for Pavlik, he ran into problems against Bernard Hopkins two fights later - losing to the crafty veteran via unanimous decision, prompting some to question his skills.
Pavlik's titles weren't on the line when he faced "The Executioner." But he ended up parting ways with them in 2010, losing to Sergio Martinez via unanimous decision. He didn't look good in his last fight either, barely walking away with a majority decision against Alfonso Lopez.
Pavlik has also had a few legal problems over the years, getting arrested for a DUI several months ago. Shortly after his arrest, Pavlik split ways with his long time trainer Jack Loew, choosing to go to California and train with Robert Garcia.
At only 30 years old, Pavlik's career is far from done, and he plans to revitalize his reputation when he faces Aaron Jaco on March 31. His decision to part ways with Loew seems like a smart move, and it'll be interesting to see how the change of scenery affects his abilities inside the boxing ring. Luckily for Pavlik, Jaco isn't exactly the most dangerous opponent out there.
Pavlik certainly seems confident heading into his bout against Jaco, and he plans to take a step closer towards title contention.
"Changing trainers was very hard," Pavlik said about preparations for his upcoming fight. "But so far, this has worked out real well with Robert Garcia. … I'm working on counter-punching now - a whole variety of new things we are working on. I am totally focused on boxing. … I sparred 10 rounds the other day and in the eighth round, I had more bounce in my step than I had in second round."
Lem Satterfield, "Pavlik: 'I am totally focused on boxing'"
