Andre Ward leaps atop super middleweight division

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—Andre Ward left Oracle Arena hoping for just a normal Sunday in the Oakland suburbs, including plenty of church and family time with his wife and children.

Yet he also realizes life will never be the same after what he did to WBA champion Mikkel Kessler on Saturday night in a victory that turned the super middleweight division on its head.

“I think I’m the most underestimated fighter in the game,” Ward said, before adding quickly: “I don’t know about after tonight.”

Ward’s unanimous technical decision shook a division packed with talented fighters who all thought they were chasing Kessler (42-2), the power-punching Dane who had reigned for most of the past five years. Instead, Kessler was overwhelmed by Ward (21-0), whose speed and discipline reduced the division’s dominant fighter to an excuse-making sore loser.

Ward’s victory in front of a rollicking hometown crowd also injected a new wave of energy into the Super Six tournament, which began last month with two victories by European fighters over Americans. With this seismic shift, Ward (21-0) has finally broken onto the international stage five years after winning Olympic gold in Athens.

Ever the cool-headed calculator, Ward already had considered how his career would change with this win.

“This is the more dangerous place to be than being at the bottom of the mountain,” Ward said. “There’s a lot more coming at you. Just stay focused, that’s the key.”

The innovative, Showtime-backed Super Six tournament takes on a whole new tenor when it continues early next year with Andre Dirrell’s bout against Arthur Abraham. Ward is expected to fight Jermain Taylor in March, likely in Oakland.

“This is going to put a lot of steam into the Super Six tournament,” said Ward’s promoter, Dan Goossen. “Andre is like a boulder rolling downhill right now. We’ve got a lot of believers after this, and he’s just going to get bigger and bigger.”

Until Saturday, the two main knocks against Ward were his seemingly unimpressive level of competition and his ability to take a punch. He firmly answered both questions by trouncing the best 168-pounder around and barely even getting hit in the process.

Ward and Virgil Hunter, his longtime trainer and mentor, both acknowledged feeling some redemption after the criticism of Ward’s deliberate pro path since the Athens games.

“They minimize my style, they minimize me, and then when they get in there, they think, ‘This is not what I signed up for,”’ Ward said. “Up to now, that’s been an advantage for me. By the time they figure it out, it’s too late.”

Kessler’s excuses, including complaints about Ward’s head-butting and holding, held no water with a crowd of more than 10,000 gathered to watch Ward’s first major title shot. Kessler’s utter ineffectiveness seemed to be due more to Ward’s elusiveness and power, which put Kessler firmly on the defensive nearly every minute after the first three rounds.

Ward deflected the praise for his victory onto Hunter, the architect of yet another clever game plan against an opponent taking Ward lightly. Hunter felt Kessler started to quit midway through the fight when it became apparent Ward wouldn’t wilt under his pressure, saying he saw a similar quitting instinct in Kessler’s only previous loss to Joe Calzaghe.

“When you fight like that, year in and year out, you can’t change,” Hunter said. “Pressure is going to really make it come out. When (Kessler) is on top, when he’s pushing the issue, he’s a great fighter, but I knew it would change when he started getting hit with punches he’s never been hit with before. I give Calzaghe all the respect in the world, but he’s a slapper. I knew (Kessler) had never been cracked.”

After a second major success in Oakland, Goossen plans to keep a hometown advantage. The promoter expects Taylor to travel to the Bay Area in March for another Oracle Arena bout, with Goossen hoping to open the capacious arena’s upper deck this time.

Taylor’s brutal knockout loss to Abraham last month had some wondering whether he would continue in the tournament at all, but Taylor apparently already is in training, according to his Twitter feed. Ward welcomed the challenge, saying, “I don’t think they can make Jermain exit out of the tournament, so it’s his decision.”

The trip to California also changed the mindset of Kessler, who accepted the villain’s role for a big payday, only to emerge feeling burned by the home-state referee.

Kessler said he wouldn’t agree to fight Carl Froch in England for his next tournament bout, as many had expected, instead insisting on fighting back home in Denmark.

“I think this will make the tournament more exciting,” Kessler said. “I don’t want to be the favorite.”

Looked to me like Ward didn't need to do the intentional head butting, he would have won anyway.

Looked to me like he didn't need to "quick punch" on the breaks either, he would have won anyway.

    But, he did.

He looked like a Billy Goat. He did quick punch on the breaks. He did hold with the hand opposite the ref's view, ala Mayweather vs Hatton. He did hold behind the head and pull down.

Which makes him a cheat, and the win look cheap. He didn't need to.

And yet with all that, he couldn't seem to punch hard enough to stun the much slower Kessler.

Guarantee, Abraham will cover up, turtle up, and will hurt Ward with counters if they meet.

Guaranteed. Let's see if Ward can run AND hide for 12 rounds with King Arthur. Otherwise, he'll be looking up at the ceiling....

Congrads to Andre Ward and his team! I knew he had the best talent in this tournament and the
know-how, when he did away with the Black dude in his last fight! Kessler WAS the man that did
most of the HOLDING! Everyone knows that whenever a champion comes into the ring, he comes
to win, so it is up to his opponent to TAKE IT AWAY! I'm so proud of Ward, because thats ex-
actly what he did. HE TOOK IT! Go Ward! You're the man!!!!!!

Win you come to fight, you come to fight! Kessler came to fight but he only brought one plan because it was all he thought he needed.. Straight head fighter, no movement, and he couldn't adjust to what he didn't expect. Those butts were as much a part of his coming forward unable to adjust, as the saying (styles make fights). Ward didn't just beat him, Ward attacked & jumped on him and the butts were just a part of the whipping. When you start looking for excuses you already lost! Douglas kept punching Holifield below the belt and the ref wouldn't say anything, so he took care of it like a champion should He whacked him back! End of that... Kessler was made for Ward....

Fellas, as good as Abraham is he is definitely beatable and probably get beat by Ward or Dirrell because he's a slow starter and their speed can make him look bad. But if he's in Europe fighting, he'll win by decision because if you watched the Froch vs. Dirrelle fight, you'll know what I mean!

Andre Ward is a sensational Fighter but after the third headbutt a point should've been taken. Now I know accidental butts aren't suppose to count against you but the fight could've been called after the third one. Okay now that I've said my peace on the butts, Andre Ward completely beat Kessler in every facet of the fight and he is not a dirty fighter at all. Kessler whined because he lost his belt and I understand his disappointment but he better be glad that he didn't fight "Dirty" Carl Froch............ Now that's a dirty fighter!

I just saw the fight and 2 things were clear 1. Ward has good hand speed and 2. 5 accidental head butts ! Come on how many do you need to give before they are intentional ? I mean I think Ward would have won but it wouldn't have looked suspect the way it did. If you look at Ward on the head butt that cut the right eye lid that ended the fight he gave a look as if to see how bad it was. I am not taking anything away from him but just that it would have looked better minus that many head butts. Great fight even thou it ended soon and I think Kessler would have went through the whole 12 rounds but then maybe it would have been a closer fight.

One more thing the announcer after the fight said "Yes there was 5 head butts & holding by Ward but that wasn't a factor in the outcome"! Is he retarded I mean if you get cut obviously you will have trouble seeing & the holding just gave Ward chances to rub against the cuts. Once again not siding with anyone but fight wasn't as fair as it should have been. I know not everyone will agree but thats my opinion and what I saw.

Ward IS legitimate. Gold medal. New champion. He was not a battering ram. Kessler just got out matched. Ward has more talent. So stop under-estimating this man. Kessler was not robbed, not cheated, just beaten.

I didn't think Manny would beat Oscar. I wasn't sure he would beat Cotto. He whipped both of them. I'm not sure he can beat Williams. Williams is such a pressure fighter and soooo long for Manny. I have a hard time even seeing them in the same weight class. I like Williams alot. I'm not sure I even want to see that fight. Looking forward to Manny vs. Mayweather. I'll give Mayweather the edge.

I think Pavlik would be a good alternate. He beat Talyor. His only loss was Hopkins who schooled him. Just a bad matchup for Pavlik. I still think he could win the Super Six if given the chance. Could, not would.

Andre Ward was NOT impressive against Kessler, and has yet to truly convince boxing fans that he is a legitimate pro fighter period.
Is he better than average. probably slightly.
But he has a LOT of work to do, and a LOT of improvements to make.
He should have had Kessler knocked out after using his head as a human battering ram, intentionally too, i think to disable Kessler.
    Ward is not impressive.

OK, Paul Williams is good, but lets be serious, he is not whipping up on all the 168lb fighters in the Super 6, definitely not Ward or Abraham, You all are making him out to be this guy no one can beat, just like they did with Margarito. It's a whole different game up at 168. And Paul Williams is not beating B-Hop or Dawson at 175. And whoever mentioned Chavez Jr. has got to be kidding, he is terrible. His record is deceptive, he has not fought anyone of note.

As for the 154lb division, that is the weakest division in all of boxing. There are about 10 guys at least fighting at 147 that can win a title at 154 so if anyone wants to pad their belt count they could do it pretty easily...

The Pacquiao-Mayweather winner wouldn't fight Williams, so don't even mention that. It would be nice for him to fight Mosely though.
Chavez, Jr. isn't ready to fight the top level of competition. His conditioning has to get better, his defense has to get better, and he has to get more confident. But they said the same thing about Andre Ward and look what it got him!
Pavlik is a real threat in that class. I don't know what this dude is talkin' about! The only dude to beat him is Bernard Hopkins, a Hall of Famer, and that was at a weight he should not have attempted to go to and fight the best ... you gotta have tune-ups! But he is ready fot those cats. And him and Paul will go at it early next year. Should be a good one.

@ # 15 - Please tell me you didn't mentoin Pavlik and Chavez Jr. as viable American Super Six options... Heck - those two aren't viable for any country (Aside from the fact JCC Jr. isn't american...).
The only thing Pavlik is the champion of is ducking opponents... and Jr. has fought more hand picked tomato cans than Mike Tyson did...

Good call on Williams though - he would be tough to handle in that tourney - thats for sure.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that would like to see Williams go back to 147 for a shot at the Pacquiao/Mayweather winner...

    Lev,

It would not have mattered where the fight was or who the ref was. It was clear that Kessler could not deal with the hand speed of Ward. He would of lost the fight if it was in my back yard. It is like most European fighters once they get exposed that they are overrated they start to cry about unfairness and people being crooked. The funny thing is that more robberies happen overseas than in the US. There is no way you can tell me Frock beat Dirrell even with the point deduction. He got a hometown decision. It is the only reason why they dont come to the US to fight. They know that they are not going to have bought judges and refs. Overall that has been the case throught the history of boxing. European fighters come with blown up undefeated records by beating bus drivers in their country, then they come to the US to get beat down. The only exception was Lennox Lewis. The best overseas fighter ever. Besides that it is the same old story. And if any one mentions Calzaghe as great they need to be slapped. He fought nobody during his career. When he finally did they were old. When he was being forced to defend the title against Chad Dawson is when he decided to retire because he did not want to lose. He will be the only undefeatetd champion to reitre and not make the hall of fame because all he beat was cab and bus drivers. lol

Ward cheated, where were you after the Froch/Dirrel fight. Dirrel got a point deducted but Froch didn't get any deductions for the elbows, punches behind the head, holding and hitting, and all the wrestling Froch initiated. Froch admitted to doing these things at the post fight interview. So if you didn't complain about that fight don't complain about Ward. Did any of you guys complain about Hatton's rough house tactics? Didn't think so. Just admit it, Kessler went to England to fight Calzage and choked. He went to America to fight Ward and choked.

Ward was wining the fight and looked like he would finish Kessler before the 12th but the turning point in the fight came when Ward went head first @ Kessler like a ram. I don't know how anyone (Andre Ward & his camp) can look @ that replay and say that was not intentional. The actions by Ward clearly show that he & his camp were afraid of Kessler's K.O. power that can change a fight @ any time so they needed secure the victory by stopping the fight @ the right time so it would go to the scorecard's when Ward was clearly ahead.

American's only hope Ward was favored by referee. Despite Kessler's promoter protests and this event rules, referee was from California that was ridiculous. As a person with two decades in boxing judging, I can say that for referee no problem to turn a fight in favor of anyone, so he did exactly that. Shame on America that it needs such a dishonesty to promote its own fighters. And this a country of Robinson, Ali and Tyson? Shame!

Any of you watch the fight? Kessler was dominated but the referee didnt even hide who he wanted to win. The referee should be banned from ever refereeing a title match again. Regardless of the ref Ward would have won but the way clinches were seperated or werent seperated and there were two intentional headbuts one was ruled as unintentional and the other was ruled a cut from a punch both b.s. The referee sucked plain and simple and its not right that it in someway big or small depending who you ask an American or a Dane affected the outcome of the fight Kessler has legitimate beef with the way it turned out and all the American writers patronizing him for being a sore loser need to check themsleves.

What's going to happen with Kessler when he fights Froch in nottingham, england? Let's hear Kessler and his promoter complain about refs in england, about Froch rough housing. Look at what happened to Dirrel in england, and Froch was outlanded 3 to 1.
