Did Rahman get screwed or screw himself?

This is a tough one to swallow for Hasim Rahman. His fight against James Toney was stopped after three rounds because of a cut over Rahman's left eye. Toney was handed a TKO victory. The cut didn't appear to be in a terrible place and wasn't bleeding too badly. Rahman told the Baltimore Sun that the loss was bogus.

Watch for yourself.

Did Rahman say he couldn't see after the round or did the doctor say Rahman couldn't continue? It sounded to me around 3:05 on the video, that he said he couldn't see. But it's not clear audio. If it's a Rahman decision, it's a TKO. If not, it's a no contest.

What a shocker, Rahman's camp is saying Toney benefitted from homecooking.

"I heard the doctor tell the referee the fight couldn't go on for medical reason and the ref said, it'll be [no decision]," Rahman's trainer Marshall Kauffman said.

"Then all of a sudden we start hearing its going to be called a TKO [because Rahman was said to have quit] ...I think there was something funny going on there in all honesty. James Toney is from California. He has fought there nearly a hundred times. He is their house fighter. For them to break the rules like that, well, you can't change the rules like that."

Another sad night for boxing. I can't wait until for Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito on July 26, a breast free night. Even in slightly better condition, Toney was sporting some B-cups.

Canseco knocked for a loop in boxing debut

How many times will former athletes get into a boxing ring before they realize the sport is NOT easy? Not every big guy can be a boxer. The 6-foot-4, 248-lb. Jose Canseco, a former baseball slugger who has been at the center of the steroids controversy, found out quickly that you don't mess with someone who has legitimately worked on his fight game.

Former Philadelphia Eagle Vai Sikahema, 45, definitely has skills and showed them while pummeling Canseco in 97 seconds.

Sikahema, a Golden Gloves champ before his football career with more than 80 amateur fights, was giving away seven inches and 43 pounds. The size disadvantage had zero effect on what looked and sounded like a very angry Sikahema:

"He's a very impressive-looking guy. But the guy is a walking corpse, because he's rotted inside out. He's a pathetic figure."

Not only did Canseco (pictured with ex-wife Jessica) insult boxers with this stunt, he actually had the gall before the fight to mention a mixed martial arts career. Canseco, 44, claims that he is a black belt in Kung Fu, Taekwando and Muay Thai:

"I wanted to get involved with MMA (mixed martial arts) and this is first step to it. Let's see what happens, how I do, how the fans like it. I'll have to see. If I go anything further than this I'll have to train a lot more, really take this serious. I really didn't take this serious at all. Hopefully we can have some fun."

Sikahema clearly wasn't on hand to have "fun" and Canseco learned that he'd better get serious if he ever tries it again. He may also want to stay away from Philly opponents:

"He came out here in first-class, (and is) flying home coach. That's how we roll in Philly," Sikahema said.

Canseco told Channel 10 NBC in Philly that he'd like to fight Sikahema again. If Sikahema won't do it, there's a line five miles long willing to challenge the former MLB slugger the next time around, according to Bernard Fernandez of the Philadelphia Daily News:

(Fight promoter Damon) Feldman said he has received nearly 2,000 e-mails from people who'd like a shot at Canseco, including, he claimed, third-party representatives professing to represent former champions Mike Rossman, Ray Mercer and Bobby Czyz. Canseco wisely has said he'd prefer not to mix it up with real pro fighters, at least not initially.

Canseco went through this public humiliation for just $35,000. Better yet, Canseco may have fought for free. He owes his former lawyer Robert Saunooke $342,000 in overdue legal fees. Saunooke, who said he would double Sikahema's winnings, actually played football at BYU in 1988 shortly after Sikahema ('80-'85).

Sikahema will donate $5,000 of his $25,000 purse to the widow of a Philadelphia police sergeant who was killed in the line of duty earlier this year.

Cortez defends controversial ruling

LAS VEGAS — The Francisco Lorenzo Saga continues.
Referee Joe Cortez, who is on vacation in Hawaii, defended his actions in Saturday's bout for the WBC interim super featherweight championship at Mandalay Bay between Lorenzo and Humberto Soto.

Cortez disqualified Soto for an illegal blow to the back of the head of a downed opponent in the fourth round, giving Lorenzo a controversial win. But the WBC refused to recognize Lorenzo as the champion because president Jose Sulaiman believed the Lorenzo overdramatized the effects of the blow.

Cortez said Thursday the rulebook provides no leeway and he had no choice to disqualify Soto and give the win to Lorenzo. Cortez said he felt the punch in question that landed was a solid blow.

"But it wouldn't matter, even if it were a tap, an illegal punch to the back of the head is an illegal punch and I have to enforce the rules," Cortez said.

After the punch, Cortez called time and ringside physician David Watson examined Lorenzo. Cortez said Watson told him that Lorenzo had received "a concussive blow to the back of the head" and could not continue.

"What am I going to do, overrule the doctor?" Cortez said. "If the doctor says it's a concussive blow, I can't overrule him."

Cortez also disputed a contention that he had made a mistake earlier in the round by momentarily jumping between Soto and Lorenzo as Soto was going for the finish. He said he jumped in because he believed the fighters were about to clinch, but when he saw they did not, he spun away and let the action continue.

Cortez was unhappy that he was being singled out for blame when he was doing his job and enforcing the rules.

"The fighter is the one who threw the illegal punch to the back of the head, not me," Cortez said. "The doctor ruled it was a concussive blow to the back of the head. And when I have a situation where it's an illegal punch and the fighter can't continue, the only choice a referee has is to enforce the rules and call the disqualification."

James Toney finds a fatter heavyweight to laugh at

But since he became a spokesperson for the bro and the manziere, he's become a heavyweight circus act.
His floppy breasts and lack of gas made for laughable performances against Samuel Peter and Hasim Rahman.

But because boxing has no shame, we're getting Toney-Rahman II on July 16 at Pechanga Resort Casino in California. The fight will air on FoxSportsNet's Best Damn Sports Show.

Toney, 39, does sound like he's taking training more seriously according to Robert Morales with The DailyBreeze.com:

James 'Lights Out' Toney sat in a small banquet room inside Sisley Italian Kitchen in Sherman Oaks on Thursday. I like running again, believe it or not. It's a great thing."

"I got lazy and lackadaisical," Toney said. "I can't blame Dan Goossen, I can't blame Freddie Roach, I can't blame my wife, I can't blame my kids.
Golden Boy is abusing boxing fans with a Mosley-Mayorga pay-per-view fight

The rise of those corrupt, pay-for-play, bodies made real matchmaking nearly impossible. That meant a consistent flow of lousy 'big' fights.

De La Hoya has done a lot to change the old pillage and plunder mindset put forth by King. He also ended his cold war with old partner, Bob Arum, ushering in a new era of big matches.

But recently Golden Boy is showing some of the old guard's garbage matchmaking tendencies.

It started with April's promotional failure, Bernard Hopkins v. Joe Calzaghe (sold less than 10,000 paid seats in Las Vegas), then continued with De La Hoya's own fight against Steve Forbes in May. Fight fans could swallow those duds saying, 'at least we didn't have to pay for it.'

Now Golden Boy could really stick it to the fans by putting a Shane Mosley-Ricardo Mayorga fight on pay-per-view, October 11th at Staples Center.

The mindset behind this fight is described by ESPN.com's Dan Rafael:

Before Mosley signed to face former undisputed champ Zab Judah on May 31, a fight canceled because of an injury to Judah, there had been talk of Mosley-Mayorga. Now, the junior middleweight fight is close to reality.

'This is a fight that we tried to make instead of Judah,' Jin Mosley, Shane wife's and told ESPN.com. 'Things happen for a reason. Don King is a legend and we always wanted an opportunity to work with him. Mayorga is one of my favorite fighters to watch, so it is a great matchup and will be an exciting night. We are hoping that this will be Shane's next bout.'

Carl King, Mayorga's manager, told ESPN.com on Sunday night: 'We are talking. We're ready, willing and able. This is the fight we want. It's a fight we've been wanting for five years. Shane is one of the most decent guys in the sport. He's always been a class act. I think it's a good fight for both guys. It's a better fight for Ricardo than some of the other fights out there for him.'

Are we serious? Who is going to pay $45 or $50 for Mosley-Mayorga on PPV?

Mayorga always makes the pre-fight entertaining by making a clown of himself. If you have to make this fight, wouldn't it benefit boxing a lot more if you gave it to fans for free?

The Mosley Camp was initially looking for a fight against Sergio Mora but that fell apart quickly because The Contender champ is bound contractually to other fights.

Arum blames Bush for slow sales

Bob Arum, the Hall of Fame boxing promoter, will have none of the suggestion that ticket sales for middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik's first title defense are slow because he's facing a weak opponent, Gary Lockett, who is unknown in the U.S.

Arum said that not as many of Pavlik's fanatical followers from Youngstown, Ohio, will make the trek to Atlantic City, N.J.'s Boardwalk Hall for the HBO-televised bout on June 7 than did last year for his title-winning effort over Jermain Taylor.

But Arum said that has nothing to do with Lockett's considerably lower profile than Taylor.

"It's not all left hooks and jabs," Arum said Wednesday during a media conference call.

Arum has a culprit he's blaming, though: President George W. Bush.

"He's (expletived) up the economy so bad, people can't afford to buy tickets," said Arum, who was a staunch supporter of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson in the race for Democratic presidential nomination.

"People are hurting. There won't be the same number who came to the Jermain Taylor fight. It's not because they're not back Kelly. They're hurting. Gas is over $4 a gallon. Wake up and realize what is happening in this country."

Arum said Pavlik will earn a $2.5 million purse for his first title defense (his win in a February rematch with Taylor was a non-title fight). Lockett, who is from Wales, will make $250,000.
Someone asked Arum if that's Lockett's biggest purse.

"The dollar is so (expletive) weak now, who knows?" he boomed.
