Now that American Thanksgiving is over and done with and we’re still sifting through leftovers, the holiday season is upon us. That means it’s time for the best minor/junior hockey promotion there is: Teddy Bear Toss.
The ECHL’s Bakersfield Condors kicked things off on Saturday night during their 6-5 overtime win against the Utah Grizzlies. Just 98 seconds into the game Chase Schaber scored a beauty of a goal and then the teddy bears began to fly:
The furry creatures were counted live on Monday morning’s Bakersfield Now, with the total amount ending up at 7,358 bears. The United Way will be donating them all to nearly 60 different non-profit organizations throughout Kern County, California.
In the 16 years doing the event, the Condors have watched 95,567 bears in all hit the ice during the promotion.
The kings of this event are still the WHL's Calgary Hitmen who saw close to 26,000 bears fly last year. Their 2014 event is this coming Sunday, Dec. 7. Can they top their own record?
