Ultimate Jersey Foul: Getting arrested wearing your personalized Maple Leafs sweater

One of the most hallowed regulations in our ongoing Jersey Fouls series is that one does not place his or her own name on the back of one’s hockey sweater under most circumstances.*

It can only lead to confusion, ridicule and derision. Plus, it makes it very easy for police to identify you if you’re charged with an indecent act in a subway station.

The Toronto police reported on Tuesday that they arrested Nardeo Samlall, 47, of Toronto on Sept. 3 and charged him with an indecent act and failure to comply with probation. Police say he approached a group of females at the Kennedy subway station, sat down on a bench and “performed an indecent act.” He later “brushed up against” a second group of females.

A woman called the police and kept the man under observation, which was quite easy considering he was wearing (a) a bright white Toronto Maple Leafs jersey with white shorts and white shoes and (b) that jersey had his name on the back of it.

No Leafs No!

As if putting your own name on a jersey wasn’t indecent enough. Color us surprised this wasn’t also a ‘69’ jersey. Then again, the arrest wasn’t made in Florida.

* Jersey Fouls regulations state that one can wear their own name on a jersey if it was bestowed upon them by the team, or if they played for the team themselves. While we can neither confirm nor deny that Nardeo Samlall received a jersey from the Leafs, we can confirm that he never skated wearing No. 55 for the Leafs. And thank goodness for that, because this guy on a bench (allegedly…)
