Top 10 NHL team rivalries as of right now

The new EPIX Road To The NHL Stadium Series put forth the idea that the Los Angeles Kings and the San Jose Sharks were one of the NHL’s greatest current rivalries.

This got us thinking: What are the NHL’s greatest current team rivalries? Which two teams, should they meet, are mandatory viewing?

So we bounced around some lists through the Puck Daddy and Yahoo Sports editorial offices and came up with the following countdown.

(Apologies to NBC, but Bruins/Wild did not make the cut, despite being featured on RIVALRY NIGHT.)

What are the top 10 biggest rivalries in the NHL currently? Agree, disagree … OK, mostly disagree in the comments!

And here... we ... go.

10. Los Angeles Kings vs. Chicago Blackhawks

These two burgeoning dynasties have had their clashes, but also have other long-standing feuds that trump this one. There’s no question that the two most successful teams of the last five seasons play ultra-competitively against each other. This series was pretty OK.

9. Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers

When will both of these teams play well in the same season so this rivalry can rightfully take its place in the top three? Is it synced to the arrival of a comet? Do we need Joel Otto to come out of retirement to hound Nugent-Hopkins?

8. Anaheim Ducks vs. Los Angeles Kings

OK, admittedly this is a tough call. Both Ducks fans and Sharks fans call dibs on having a blood feud with the Kings. Case in point:

Those tweets were pretty much made in two different places at the same time. So confusing!

But overall, it seems that the Ducks don’t have the same level of bile-fueled feuding that the Kings have with that other California team. Which isn’t meant as a diss for this matchup, because they straight up hate each other too. Or at least Ducks fans hate Kings fans, but Kings fans can't hear them because they've got rings in their ears.

In the sense that they're gold-cased iPhones keep ringing during games.

7. Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens

This is still the granddaddy of them all, and has only lacked relevance because the Leafs have turned into a tire fire inside of a dumpster fire outside of a manure processing plant. But when they’re on the ice, bragging rights for the true Centre of the Hockey Universe remain on the line. Nothing else touches this rivalry's history or potential.

6. St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks

“Wakey, wakey.” That should be all we need to say here, but to further state the case: Norris Division hatred that’s continued through the decades, with every Blues fan knowing where the path to their first Stanley Cup goes through.

5. Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Now that the Capitals look like contenders again and Alex Ovechkin is in the Hart Trophy conversation, the simmering feud with Sid and the Penguins is back in the forefront without it needing to be forced by the NHL. Brooks Oprik laying the boom on ex-teammates in the postseason? Delicious drama right there.

4. San Jose Sharks vs. Los Angeles Kings

As stated earlier, the opinions are really split on who the Kings’ arch rival really is now. The EPIX series put over this one, and it’s hard to argue that it has just a little more juice than the more localized rivalry with the Ducks. Not only because of the traditional NoCal/SoCal hate, but because of their recent playoff wars. Although blowing that 3-0 lead might make “San Jose Sharks vs. Themselves” the actual choice here.

3. New York Islanders vs. New York Rangers

While the Devils have descended onto a Czech Republic old age home on skates, the Islanders are back and contending in the East. This still feels a little one-sided given that the Rangers have been very good while the Islanders, well, haven’t. But give us seven games in the first round to potentially close out Nassau, and the city will stop to watch.

2. Philadelphia Flyers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Both of these teams have other dance partners as far as rivalries, but no one brings out the hate like their cross-state enemies. Every game brings the drama. Our favorite new twist? It’s the PENGUINS that are bullies, obviously.

1. Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins

It’s got that Original Six-tory. It’s got recent battles in the postseason. It’s got a coach who used to coach on the other side. It’s got hatred and hated players. It’s got roughing and diving. And it had a member of one team threatening to murder members of the other team. Winter Classic 2016 ... there will be blood!
