Tim Thomas on Obama snub: ‘Not about politics or party’ but ‘right as a Free Citizen’

    Getty Images

Tim Thomas was the only Boston Bruins player from their 2011 Stanley Cup championship team that chose not to attend a White House celebration of their achievement. Cam Neely, the Bruins' team president, cited Thomas's "own opinions and political beliefs" for that absence.

On the official Facebook page for Tim Thomas — his other page is for his hockey camps — the Bruins goalie and playoff MVP clarified his absence from the White House event:

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

"This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

"Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

"This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT"

Something tells me that with Thomas slated to appear in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game this weekend, this might not be the only public statement he'll make on this controversy. It's overshadowed the Bruins' visit to the White House. It'll likely do the same for Thomas's participation in the midseason classic.

UPDATE: Cam Neely with a statement from the B's:

"As an organization we were honored by President Obama's invitation to the White House. It was a great day and a perfect way to cap our team's achievement from last season. It was a day that none of us will soon forget. We are disappointed that Tim chose not to join us, and his views certainly do not reflect those of the Jacobs family or the Bruins organization. This will be the last public comment from the Bruins organization on this subject."

We should all exercise our "Free Rights" and never vote for an incumbant past 2nd term for all levels of government. It's time the people take back their country.

He is so right! It's refreshing to hear him mention both parties are at fault. Why do we keep voting for these criminals?

I agree. Most people have realized that both parties no longer represent the people but special interest groups where the special interest groups pay them under the table one way or the other. We the American people have to start demanding and protesting the government of today. Limit terms will control how long politicans can be in office would be a great help

Hey, it is still a free country. He can do whatever he wants, if WH invites him, he is free to go or not go..... His choice.... So lay off him folks....

Interestingly enough wasn't one of the NBA champion team members denied access when his team visited? It is Tim's choice. Let it go.

The media has grown out of control too! Why does it have to be labeled a "snub"? I think this is great! The President is supposed to work for us. Not the other way around.

Right or wrong is not up for us to decide. I applaude his convictions and his willingness to stand up for them even though he knew it would bring negative attention his way. The freedom that gave him the right to opt out of this celebration are the same the same freedoms that give us the right to express our opinions here on this site. Bully for you!

"By their actions, not their words shall ye judge them".Mr Thomas saw the government that way and took his stand,if this is still a free country and society, then you cannot fault his decision.

I'm glad the size of the masses is increasing. When "celebrities" start opening themselves to ridicule you know that it's going to get attention. So thank you for speaking a plain and simple truth. My question is; Why aren't more celebs doing the same? Is it just like the politicos, worried about the bottom line only? The more we debate the faster we will move in a new direction. Be that the totalitarian fascism or a better democracy. Everyone must FIGHT for the future you want. Let the revolution begin.

I don't see how this is a "controversy"... He made a choice.. one that he is aloud to do.. #$%$ is wrong with that!?

The man has a choice to go or not. I have no problem with him exercising that right. I do have a problem with the way this government is going because if this government keeps up, we will not have the choice to go or not.

I may not agree with his means of protest, but he should not be penalized or criticized for his actions. This America and every American has the right, under our Constitution to express his pleasure or displeasure for our government with out fear of retribution. It should not make a difference if that individual is a player of a NHL team or a cab driver. Their opinion and protest carries the same weight. Like I said, Mr. Thomas, I disagree with how you handled your protest but will stand right beside you defending your right to do it. Not that you need my help!!
