Red Wings will reward Todd Bertuzzi with 2-year extension as trial looms this fall

Getty ImagesThe key date for Todd Bertuzzi now that he's apparently decided to remain with the Detroit Red Wings on a 2-year extension: Sept. 24.

The trial over former Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Moore's $38 million lawsuit against Bertuzzi, for that career-ending attack in 2004, would have started on Oct. 12 if Bertuzzi didn't have an NHL contract after this season; now, it begins on Sept. 24, as the legal wrangling continues over who will be liable if Moore wins the case.

Can you think of another franchise in the National Hockey League that would offer more support, comfort and insulation for a player in Bertuzzi's spot than the Red Wings? No one will whisper a word about distractions or disappointment or personal opinions on the incident.

We don't want to say Detroit runs a tight ship, but it would have plowed through that iceberg in the Atlantic back in 1912 without a leak.

All of that aside: Bertuzzi's been one of the best reclamation projects in recent memory.

He plays within his abilities at 37 years old, potting around 18 goals and posting around 44 points per season. He's a plus-21 this season, playing 15:46 per night and a bit on the power play. Just an effective role player.

Helene St. James of the Freep has his deal, which hasn't been formally announced, at $2.2 million per season, and Nick Kypreos has it in the "ballpark of $2 million."

But Amerinadian of Winging It in Motown isn't digging this deal:

I get that people are excited for this signing, but I'm not that big of a fan. I don't like a $2.2M per season deal for a guy who last year scored 2 goals in his final 21 games and scored 3 in his final 30 the year before. I also don't like a 2-year deal for a guy who has had a questionable injury past. There's also the uncertainty of the CBA and what the terms of that are going to be. Overall, I would have preferred to see the Wings see what Bert brings the rest of the season before deciding to award him with a multi-year deal, because I think there are younger guys ready to step up and take his place on the team.

Age and injuries are legit concerns. But the price is OK and Bertuzzi fits well in Detroit — whether it's as a big body or the occasional master of the shootout spin-o-rama. He's a good soldier that does what he's told.

But then, that's always been Bertuzzi, for better or really, really worse.

As a Canuck fan my feelings about Bert are similar to those of a special old girlfriend, maybe from my youth...I know I can never go back nor would I want to but considering how things ended I am happy that he is doing well and flourishing somewhere else. Go get em Bert!

"because I think there are younger guys ready to step up and take his place on the team"

Like who? Emmerton? Mursak? I think Kypreos has been watching different Wings games than I have, because I haven't seen THESE kids challenging for 3rd or 2nd line duty and Holland and Co. see a lot more in their own system than I certainly do.

i don't think that quote was from Kypreos, it was from the blog i think
      • Ron 2 months ago
Emmerton and Mursak aren't expected to turn into top 6 forwards. I think he was referring more to Nyquist/Tatar or Jarnkrok/Pulkkinen a few years down the road perhaps.
      • Michael Suggs 2 months ago
Nice try, but that blogger is not talking about Emmerton or Mursak. He was most likely talking about Nyquist and Tatar, both of whom have the talent to be top 6 players. Or, as Ron mentioned, Jarnkrok and Pulkkinen a little later on.

Maybe actually try doing research on ALL of their prospects, not just the ones who have been relegated to 4th line duty, due to an abundance of depth. For the Wings, their best young players are not in the NHL yet.

Happened in 2004, trial in 2012. No, our courts aren't a joke at all.

You're the joke idiot. These things take time.
      • tyler 2 months ago
It was moved around alot, not only that but I think Moore failed a few times already in other courts.

bert did a bad thing yes but he is paying for it do you think he was thinking ok once i do this its gonna injure this guy and take him out of the game forever no he did it it was stupid but he never meant for that to happen

Try that in court when you run a red light and hurt someone else. "I didnt' mean to" doesn't hold up ... he MEANT to inflict some hurt.
      • Mike 2 months ago
on the ice has always been different than real life.. otherwise courts would be bogged down with assault charges, dick.

Good extension... Bert is a big guy, and hard to move when he's in front of the net, yet still has soft hands... his dekes/dangles aren't nearly as good as Datsyuk, but they're a lot better than most players in the league. Sure he's 37, but Detroit likes the experience, and they know how to keep their players in shape for the long run. Good deal, not a bad cap hit either.

I agree with you. I have always thought that piling on by the other players caused the injury.

Funny all this sudden support for Bertuzzi.....as a Canucks fan who was actually at the game when he suckered Moore I don't remember too many fans outside of Vancouver who were willing to cut him a break. Now that he's in Detroit instead of the League's 'most hated' team there's a big love fest.

With that said, I always like Bertuzzi, still do and hope he gets through the civil case without taking too much of a haircut.

i dont this this bert support is sudden .. majority of my friends feel the same as i .. unfortunate circumstance, freak accident, etc .. this never would have happened if moore would have just fought bert like a man instead of skating away and pretending to not hear him yelling at him ..

VAN is "the league's most hated team"? Hardy har har. Tell that to HNIC

38 million? Is Moore's argument that he was going to play in the NHL until he was 140 years old??? Seriously, the guy was barely a 4th liner. He wouldn't even be a star in the AHL!!! I'm not condoning Bertuzzi's actions, but come on!

Clearly Moore isn't capable of making money in hockey - he's been cleared to play LONG ago and isn't.
      • Chau 2 months ago
Please show me when he was cleared to play and by who.

        http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2009/09/25/sp-burke-moore.html

I'm not really buying the idea that he could not have played ever again, but i do think he's due some sort of settlement. I wish it would happen out of court though so there isn't any crazy precedent set.
      • tyler 2 months ago
He hasn't been cleared to play, but like Crosby, he was skating, practicing and working out... over 6 years ago. Please, do not tell me a concussion can last 6 years. It is easy to fake concussion symptoms, as they can not be medically proven, and Moore says he is still has headache, which is a joke because I, like everyone else in the world, have been having headaches over the course of my entire life.

"Think the refs of the infamous 2004 game should get a little blame here. I remember watching it and it was ugly from the getgo"

I know who deserves even MORE blame. How about the NHL! Why? Because they ruled Moore's vicious BLINDSIDE hit on the Canucks Naslund as legal, that's why! Had the NHL used a little common sense and PROPERLY punished Moore for his disgusting act, perhaps the even more disgusting act by Bertuzzi might not have happened.

I'm not saying Moore deserved what he received. No one deserves what happened to him. But the NHL's inconsistent officiating of its own sport has ruined it.

Bertuzzi reminds me of "doc" from the flick Cannery Row
doc hit a ball player with a fastball
is no way he can change the past, what is done is done
Both Doc & Bertuzzi will forever carry remorse
      as with Doc,
Bertuzzi cannot live in the past.
    • shadow  •  Ottawa, Ontario  •  2 months ago
i think Bertuzzi has paid the price for his absurd assault...to his credit he has been a model player since landing in Detroit...like give the guy a break...he took his juice and moved on...why cant the public do the same?
    • really4mi  •  2 months ago
There's no reason to linger on the past as he's shown remorse for the incident. He's come back and played at a level that the Wings find acceptable. That alone speaks of his worth.
    • CrackerJack  •  2 months ago
First, Todd Bertuzzi, if he could, he would love to take back what happened but of course he can't...! It has had a profound effect on his life as it has Moore's.... I have seen countless fights and altercations in the NHL and any number could have ended the same way, with a serious injury... What happened was terrible but I am sure Todd was not trying to end the guys career, his temper and actions just got away from him...! 38 million is a ridiculous judgement .. He deserves compensation but not that kind of money, because he was not that kind of player but of course you have to take into consideration what he has been through and the pain, both mental and physical he's endured .. As far as Bertuzzi's contract for 2 million a year, for two years is a bargain, he can still play...!
    • Colin  •  Oshawa, Ontario  •  2 months ago
if you watch the replay of actually what happened, it wasnt Bertuzzi that injured him, it was everyone else that jumped on them...also this terrible incident ruined both players careers, Moore never played again, Bertuzzi lost all confidence and never played the same way again. He was a top player in the league until that game.
    • Mustache of Kes  •  2 months ago
First of all, Bertuzzi's actions were completely indefensible.

That said, I've always felt pity for him. He made a really bad decision in the heat of the moment, and has paid dearly for it ever since.

$38 mil...I hope #$%$ bag Mark Crawford brings his check book.

I love how people are sanctimonious over this situation involving Moore and Bertuzzi. I'm not going to lie, if I was in Bertuzzi's shoes in 2004, I probably would have done the same thing and most people on here who played hockey also would too.

After looking at the "hit" a few dozen times, its my assumption that steve moore is a #$%$ bitch

hink the refs of the infamous 2004 game should get a little blame here. I remember watching it and it was ugly from the getgo. When the score got way out of control (final was 10-2 Colorado for those who don't remember) and fights were breaking out everywhere, the refs should have been throwing people out of the game left and right but they didn't throw out anyone so things kept escalating. Not to condone what Bertuzzi did and I think he should have to pay Moore for it but let's be honest, Moore was never going to be a big time or big money player. I'd say $7-10 million to Moore in a settlement would be more than fair.
