Pass or Fail: Los Angeles Kings ‘We Are Los Angeles’ anthem

During playoff time, it's not unusual for a local radio station or a random fan to put together an "official" anthem for their team. Usually, it's to the beat of a recent pop song, like "Thrift Shop" or a not-so-recent one, like what CTV Ottawa did earlier in the playoffs.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings are getting into the game, thanks to the music of The Goon Squad, with the song "We are Los Angeles." According to the Kings, "This is a song that captures the spirit of the LA Kings, their fan, and the city."

The Goon Squad is made up of four local musicians who also happen to be Kings fans. So where did the idea come from to write an them for the local hockey team? From a Q&A with the band on the Kings site:

GRANT: I've done a lot of touring in Europe, and have been around football fans as they cheer their teams on. Each city has a chant of musical theme that they sing, and it's always been pretty inspiring for me to watch. I've been a fan of the Kings for a long time, and got to thinking that, as a supporter, I really wanted the team to have a fight song... something to galvanize the crowd. It's also something I thought the city of LA could feel good about.

So that explains the European soccer vibe we got during the opening. And the Kings were right, we'll be singing this for hours because the repetitive chorus is now firmly stuck in our heads.
