NHL Three Stars: Scrivens leads Leafs; wild wins for Flyers, Avalanche

No. 1 Star: Ben Scrivens, Toronto Maple Leafs

Scrivens pitched his second straight shutout, blanking the Florida Panthers in the Leafs’ 3-0 victory. He made 14 saves against the home team in the first period, as Phil Kessel put the Leafs ahead for good. Overall, Scrivens had 37 saves for the game.

No. 2 Star: Claude Giroux, Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers’ Best Player In The World opened the scoring 26 seconds into their game against the New York Islanders, and they didn’t look back. Philly defeated the Isles, 7-0, as Giroux had two goals and an assist on Matt Read’s seventh of the season. Danny Briere had two goals and an assist; Jakub Voracek had four assists.

No. 3 Star: Mike Smith, Phoenix Coyotes

Smith made 30 saves in front of a sold out Jobing.com Arena crowd, as the Coyotes defeated the Calgary Flames, 4-0. Keith Yandle gave the Coyotes the lead 41 seconds into the game. Smith was at his best in the second period, stopping 13 shots. Antoine Vermette and Raffi Torres had a goal and an assist each.

Honorable Mention: Jakob Silfverberg had the lone goal in the shootout, as the Ottawa Senators rallied to beat the New Jersey Devils, 2-1. … The Colorado Avalanche won a wild one against the Nashville Predators, 6-5, as Matt Duchene had a (controversial) goal and two assists. Aaron Palushaj also had three points. For Nashville, Sergei Kostitsyn had a goal and an assist and was a plus-3. … Max Pacioretty had a goal from center ice and assisted on Tomas Plekanec’s eighth of the season in the Montreal Canadiens’ 3-0 win over Carolina. Peter Budaj stopped 19 shots for the shutout. … Jonas Hiller made 25 saves while Corey Perry scored a key power-play goal in the third to give the Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Vinny Prospal scored his fifth in the loss. ... Ilya Bryzgalov had a 19-save shutout.
