NHL Three Stars: Schneider saves NJ Devils; Porter tips the scales

No. 1 Star: Cory Schneider, New Jersey Devils

Due respect to Jaromir Jagr’s history-making night and Scott Gomez’s rare two-point evening, but it was Schneider’s 39 saves that were the difference in the Devils’ 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, as they were outshot 17-1 (!) in the third period.

No. 2 Star: Chris Porter, St. Louis Blues

Just 3:12 after Aaron Ekblad tied the game for the Florida Panthers, Porter tipped home a Barret Jackman shot to give the Blues a lead that Paul Statsny’s empty netter extended to 4-2. Porter earlier set up Max Lapierre for the game’s first goal.

No. 3 Star: Kevin Klein, New York Rangers

Klein’s sixth of the season at 3:45 of overtime found its way past Marc-Andre Fleury and gave the Rangers a 4-3 win. Not bad for a guy who earlier in the game needed 13 stitches to reattach his ear.

Honorable Mention: Jagr moved into fifth all-time in NHL points with a goal and an assist. Gomez’s two assists were his first 2-point game since playing for the San Jose Sharks in 2012-13. … Martin Brodeur got his second straight win for the Blues. … Nick Bjugstad scored his 12th for the Panthers. …  Rick Nash scored No. 18 for the Rangers, while Evgeni Malkin notched No. 15 for the Penguins. Steve Down scored 24 seconds after Geno to earn the Penguins a point. …

Did You Know? Rangers LW Tanner Glass returned to the lineup after missing four games due to the mumps.

Dishonorable Mention: Eric Gelinas was benched for the Devils after skating just 7:27 in the game. … Dmitry Kulikov was a minus-2, as was Patrik Berglund. … Rookie Brian Dumoulin had a rough night for the Penguins, skating to a minus-2.
