Minor league baseball teams to wear 'Miracle on Ice' jerseys during game (Photo)

The celebration of the 35th anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice” will continue this coming weekend in a unique way: on a baseball diamond. The Triple-A Rochester Red Wings and Syracuse Chiefs will honor the 1980 U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning hockey team by hosting Miracle on Ice Night Saturday night.

The Red Wings will be donning baseball jersey versions of the U.S. team’s white Olympic jerseys, while the Chiefs will wear the blue version. The umpires for the game will all be sporting hockey referee jerseys (What, no Soviet uniforms?). Take a look:

From the Red Wings:

Both teams' jerseys will be auctioned off in the ballpark August 1 to benefit the Red Wings Community Foundation and will be signed by the members of the 1980 US Men's Ice Hockey team that will be in attendance - Mike Ramsey, John Harrington and Ken Morrow. Each jersey for the in-ballpark auction will be signed by all three Olympians, but not the Red Wings player who wore the jersey on the field as has been the usual protocol for jersey auctions in the past. The auction will begin when the gates open at 6 p.m. A "buy it now" price will be listed with each jersey when the in-ballpark auction begins at 6 p.m.

One jersey from each team will also be auctioned off online.

"I think the Miracle on Ice is an event that happened in our country that kind of transcends sports. We thought collectively that this would be an event that fans of all kinds would enjoy,'' Rochester general manager Dan Mason told Lindsay Kramer of Syracuse.com. "I think the players on both teams are really looking to be a part of it.''

To keep things in a hockey mood, the pre-game first pitches from Ramsey, Harrington and Morrow will actually be the three former players shooting pucks from the pitcher’s mound.
