Flyers’ Brayden Schenn suspended one game for charging Anton Volchenkov; here’s why (VIDEO)
The Philadelphia Flyers have provided the 2013 NHL season’s first suspension-worthy offense, as forward Brayden Schenn received a 1-game suspension for charging New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov on Tuesday night.
(That’s Brayden. Not Luke, as NHL.com first had it. D’oh.)
The justification from Brendan Shanahan, NHP VP of player safety:

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Schenn will forfeit $4,702.70. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred at 12:37 of the second period. No penalty was assessed on the play.
Good call? Bad call?
This is why jumping to conclusions about illegal hits off the television camera angles can be a little iffy. The angles from the NBC Sports Network telecast made it unclear if Schenn jumped into the hit or where the principle point of contact was.
At around the 48-second mark of the video above, we’re given clarity: Schenn clearly left his skates into the hit – a check he had Volchenkov lined up for, and continued through after the defenseman had released the puck.
Factor in contact with the head, and you have a recipe for a Shanaban.
(Well, that and the fact that it’s a nice way to remind the NHL’s other players that the sheriff is back on patrol.)
One game is about right.
