Connor McDavid: 'Anywhere you go in the NHL is great' (Puck Daddy Interview)

Connor McDavid is on my computer screen talking to me. He’s wearing a CCM hat with a CCM logo draped behind him. It’s because he announced his partnership with the hockey company and we were asked if we wanted to Skype chat with the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft and latest savior of the Edmonton Oilers who own the top overall selection.

Oh yeah, he’s also considered a generational talent.

We asked him a few questions in our brief four-minute window with him.

What does he think about the fact that teams get to choose him in the draft, and not the other way around. Basically what’s it like being really good and being sent to a really bad team that won his services through lucky numbers?

“It’s a little bit weird. It’s different that you don’t have any say, but that’s the draft and that’s the part of the excitement. The unpredictability of it is part of the excitement for sure,” McDavid said.  “You don’t really know where you’re going to go. Anywhere you go in the NHL is great.”

He was currently at the NHL draft combine in Buffalo. Has he seen any of those Sabres, McDavid jerseys?

“No, I haven’t,” he laughed.

But c’mon man, it has to be a little strange in Buffalo, where the team and fans were dead set on you all year before Edmonton won the draft lottery.

“It’s like any other city. It’s good to be here,” he said. “The NHL combine is something I had marked on my calendar for a couple of months now. It was good to finally be here and be a part of it. “

McDavid did have his answers to sponsorship-related questions:

“I can give you a long list of names that have been a part of the (CCM) family and guys like Bobby Orr who I have a good relationship with. He was wearing CCM tacks. It’s a little bit funny now that I’m wearing it. I’m very lucky to be a part of that,” he said.

Here’s his video. Makes you kind of weepy knowing that skill is going to be playing in Hoth until he’s at earliest 27 – using the current CBA rules. (Cough, Eric Lindros, cough).

Just kidding. Edmonton's new downtown arena will transform it into Xanadu, if it hasn't already. In all sincerity it will help the team a great deal. If only it could build a closer airport ...

As for whether he’s started scoping out real estate in Edmonton?

“That’s getting a little far ahead of ourselves. I haven’t even been drafted there yet, so draft day is going to be exciting wherever it is I get selected,” he said. “It doesn’t really matter. Everywhere is great in the NHL. If it is Edmonton, that would be great.”

Hey, if he needs to take a look at a place via online video, he’s learned that there’s always Skype.

What does he think about matching up against Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews potentially as soon as next season?

“He’s a great player, he’s certainly a lot of fun to watch, I’m not sure he’s going to be fun to play against,” McDavid said also slightly side-stepping the Stanley Cup prediction question.

Amen to that. Can't wait to see it.
