The Chicago Blackhawks’ losing streak is bad for everybody

Q-stache death stare - Getty ImagesAs a Canucks fan, I think I'm supposed to be cackling with churlish glee at the recent struggles of the Chicago Blackhawks, who extended their losing streak to eight games after Friday's 5-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks and (UPDATED) Saturday's 3-0 downer against the Phoenix Coyotes.

After the Sharks game, Blackhawks' blog Indian Head Nation wrote, "The Hawks win that one with Emery in net." That should make me laugh out loud.

Chicago's Daily Herald columnist Barry Rozner Tweeted, "Thornton legendary for disappearing when things get rough but suddenly he's tough against little Jonathan Toews." The notion that the incredibly tough Jonathan Toews is suddenly some shrinking violet should have made me howl.

After all, for two years, the Blackhawks' goaltending and captain have been praised for their warriorism and their clutchiness, but over this panic-inducing stretch, the sheen has come off of both -- suddenly, Ray Emery has become the answer and Toews has shrunk. I should be relishing this.

But my heart, like a bland hot dog, is without relish. This just sucks.

With every loss, everything that makes the Blackhawks awesome comes into question --  their clutch goaltending and their clutch captain are just the beginning. Soon, someone will come for their identity.

The Blackhawks are one of only six teams averaging three goals per game. They play a high-octane system, more concerned with scoring than preventing. The problem: they're also one of only five teams in the NHL that averages three or more goals against per game. The other four: Carolina, Ottawa, Columbus, and Tampa Bay. That's bad company, and bad company can only reflect poorly on you, a lesson Sir Ben Kingsley learned when he joined the cast of BloodRayne.

If the Blackhawks don't right the ship soon, someone is bound to come for that sexy, high-octane offense.

We're already seeing the signs of it, as Chicago worked on their defensive positioning prior to the game in San Jose. From the Chicago Sun-Times:

"We probably let it slide a little when we were scoring many goals and weren't looking to prevent them at a regular rate," Quenneville said. "Especially on the road, we want to play tight, and we want to be responsible. An awareness of our positioning is what we're talking about."

On Wednesday, it was accompanied by more chalkboard instruction as the Hawks worked in the neutral zone with a variation of the 1-2-2 trap for their game against the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

I have bolded the word that makes my heart weep. GOD NO.

Of course, Quenneville has to try battening down the hatches somewhat. When you surrender 27 goals over six consecutive losses, not to mention turn Sam Gagner into the second coming of Wayne Gretzky, you're doing it wrong. The fact that nothing changed versus San Jose only makes things worse.

Some are already pointing the finger at Quenneville and GM Stan Bowman, the men who constructed this team's identity. Here's Al Cimaglia from My Fox Chicago on Quenneville's decision to bench Viktor Stalberg in the third period Friday versus the Sharks:

Quenneville has been slow to react and has been reluctant to change this season. His message to Stalberg and others has fallen on deaf ears. Quenneville has been more a part of the Hawks problems than a solution.

Although Coach Q. was correct in thinking a message must be sent to Stalberg it was the wrong time to do so. Having a shallow lineup because of injury and the flu makes it a punishment for the whole team to play short a forward.

So Quenneville was caught delivering the right message at the wrong time. Quenneville can't be held blameless this season nor should GM Bowman.

The Blackhawks are one of the last bastions of the high-octane offense, and if they continue to struggle, or worse, miss the playoffs, you have to believe that Quenneville's system will be marked for demolition, especially after what happened to Bruce Boudreau in Washington.

It seems a far-fetched notion to suggest that the Hawks could miss the playoffs this season, regardless of how bad things get, but their schedule won't help. From the same article:

Speaking of playoff hopes slipping away, the Hawks aren't at that point yet, but don't think it would be impossible to miss the post season. It has been reported the Hawks have the most difficult schedule remaining of any Western Conference club except for Nashville. The Hawks can't rely on any scheduling favors from here on out.

The highly-entertaining identity of the Blackhawks may rest in the balance this season. A playoff berth and they may stay as they are. A playoff miss and they may be due for a lobotomy.

Regardless of where your allegiances lie, that's a scary thought. I've seen my fair share of cyberpunk films, but a future without the high-octane Chicago Blackhawks as we know them is the worst future imaginable.

No grit, no goaltending and abysmal special teams. Sounds like a recipe for success.
      • Jake Coneh 3 months ago
No grit? Not sure what that is supposed to mean, but no defense is by far more harmful to the team right now than anything you just mentioned except maybe special teams
      • TV 3 months ago
@Jake Coneh, go watch tennis or golf. I agree with Kevin 100%. NO GRIT in the corners, or in front of the net to take opposing players out of the play. I've seen too many Hawks skate in a corner and not make any contact to take a player off the puck. Toews is getting the hell beat out of him and Kane doesn't even bother going into traffic in front of the net. No knowledge hockey people like you do not realize how important "GRIT" is (see Boston Bruins). The great Gretzky would not have been as great if his coach and GM weren't smart enough to have Marty McSorley as they called it, "riding shotgun" for him. Also see the Stanley Cup Red Wings with Probert/Kocur making sure nobody pounded their captain (Steve Yzerman).

Its a Queervill team. He couldn't last with good St. Louis teams either.

What a ridiculous article. Sorry, there's 200 feet of ice out there, not 90. You have to play the entire rink. The 'Hawks stink at it. And it's not just goaltending though they clearly need an upgrade. If you can't play defense you don't deserve to win.
      • Kevin 3 months ago
Actually, when broken down, the defense at 5X5 is allowing about 20 shots per game, which would be tops in the league. What is broken is the special teams and the goaltending is not helping a poor PK.

First, they came for the Blackhawks' identity, and I said nothing because I was not a Blackhawks fan.

Then they came for Chicago's sexy high-octane offense, and I said nothing because I was not sexy enough for a Blackhawks shirt.

Then they came for Patrick Sharp, but there was nobody left to say anything because they had quickly moved onto coming for Henrik Lundqvist.

The Hawk's don't have an easy schedule the rest of the way, They got the following games against playoff bound teams to date:
      4 games: St Louis
      3 games: Detroit, Nashville
2 games: NY Rangers, LA Kings
1 game: Washington, New Jersey, Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto

Against teams out of the playoff picture:
      2 games: Dallas, Columbus, Minnesota
      1 game: Anaheim

I don't think Chicago will miss the playoffs, but if Calgary, Colorado, LA and Phoenix play well down the stretch, it's possible they could push Chicago out. There's only 5 points separating Chicago (6th) and Calgary (9th)/Colorado (10th).

I worry more when the hawks play mediocre teams. They play better against better teams...not sure what is up with that.

THEY'LL CERTAINLY MISS THE PLAYOFFS, I'VE GOT FAITH IN THEM, AND THEY'VE GOT THE GOALTENDING
    • sharksfan11  •  Santa Clara, United States  •  3 months ago
I can't believe that no one on the hawks went after Vlasic or Thornton. They just let the sharks push their captain around. That's a bad sign.
      • chijim222 3 months ago
Bickel flattened Vlasic and ended up fighting. Is he supposed to jump off the bench and immediately tackle the guy when it happened, or pick his spot and hit him the next time he gets a chance?
      • Diehardnuck 3 months ago
Keith threw a few punches toward the end of the Thornton/Toews scrum and the Sharks got a powerplay goal because of it.
      • Puck Seattle 3 months ago
Thornton now has to resort to this crap because his talent is fading........

As a Blackhawks fans, it pains me to say this but I had a feeling this was going to happen. Their free agency haul was badly overhyped and hasn't come anywhere close to bringing what they were supposed to bring. Aside from Mayers, not one of Bowman's additions have paid off. These players were supposed to make the Blackhawks tougher, but they are still a soft team teams take liberties on way too often without response, save Mayers. The players they brought in were old and brought little in the way of talent that would make them better. Brunette was supposed to be a top six forward, he's now a fourth liner. O'Donnell is so old, slow, and past his prime he should be retired, not an every game defensemen. Carcillo was okay but didn't bring the edge he was supposed to bring. Montador has been average at best. Morrison has been invisible. Past trades have been no better. Frolik was given good money in the off season to stick around and he has been horrible. Leddy has hit a wall, Stalberg, while improved, still makes some of the dumbest plays I have ever seen. There are other problems as well of course, but a lot of their problems comes from the fact the additions they made did not make them any better than last year.

Bowman thinks the "core" of the Blackhawks is so good he can just slap anyone on the roster and they will contend. He has been proven decidedly wrong. I said the Blackhawks would be no better than a 5th seed in the preseason and I got ripped to shreds for it by so-called "real Blackhawks fans", got called a bandwagon jumper and all those wonderful names, all because I didn't buy into the hype. I wanted to be proven wrong, but sadly I haven't. Bowman has no eye for evaluating talent and has no idea how to build around the core that is supposed to be so great. I hope he figures this out soon because if he doesn't, the Blackhawks may not match last years 8th seed. And it kills me to say that.

Play defense or die...it is that simple. Run and gun hockey got the Capitals nothing but close. When Chicago won the Cup they had solid defensive core...that isn't there any longer.

Not sure why a 1-2-2 trap makes you weep and cry out to God. Every team (except for Tampa) runs some variation of a 1-2-2 trap. The difference is that some teams have the offensive horses to play good transition hockey.
The Red Wings of the mid-90's under Bowman trapped teams like crazy, but they were still an offensive team.
The problem is that everyone associates the word "trap" with boring, which isn't true. Your Canucks run a 1-2-2 neutral zone trap, but when you have the Sedins, Kesler, Booth, and other offensive studs, your team can turn a neutral zone turnover into a goal. It's still a trap, but there's offense behind it.

Who is saying Toews has shrunk? He basically was going 100% last night in the first period while most of the team sat around watching him get his #$%$ handed to him by various Sharks. And it's pretty obvious he's playing substantially injured (note his faceoff percentage lately). That's just for Toews. The organization has serious problems at the moment. There seems to be a disconnect between GM and Coach. Bowman trades for Brendan Morrison, who is marginalized and a healthy scratch now? Quenneville has favorites and is unable to punish players like Shaw for their mistakes but comes down extremely hard on players like Stalberg and Frolik, acquired from Bowman trades. He refuses to give Lepisto a shot at any decent amount of games despite their D being garbage, until now he is forced to because of injuries.

Toews and Kane are elite players going through some tough times right now. ALL teams go through a let down after the half way mark. Some just have not made it yet. The Hawks are a quality team, right now things are in tough mode. I hate to see them in this position, but I hope they can pull this out before they slip further down the ladder. They need to win a few to get back and remain in the top 8 positions. Getting into the playoffs, they are just as deadly as any of them, either in the East or the West. Playoff bring it all out. Go Hawks Go.

What garbage. The Blackhawks are getting what they deserve. They gutted the team and kept the "superstars". They need GOOD role players, not the goofs they have now.
    • T-Doug  •  Chicago, United States  •  3 months ago
While I agree the Hawks are playing poorly, anyone that questions Toews is an absolute #$%$ He is playing unbelievable and seems to be the only Hawk with some fire. The comment about Thornton was about the fact that he is a soft player yet felt the need to cheap shot Toews. THe last two games people have been coming for Toews. The one Sharks defender, Vlasic or whatever his name is, cheap shotted him after every whistle and then when he was finally run into the boards (with a clean hit) someone else had to come fight his battle. The Hawks need to get John Scott back out there just so somebody will actually stick up for Toews. All you fans that cheer for the Hawks early in the season and said they were back are poor excuses for fans now. In December you were saying they were winning the cup again. Now they are on a skid and you immediately jump off the bandwagon. Get over yourselfs.

As a Wings fan, I will say that I'm glad that the Hawks aren't complete garbage anymore, but I'm sure as heck not bummed that they aren't keeping up with the Wings.
The Hawks will get their crap together and make the playoffs. I don't see them going far, not because of Toews, who is fantastic, or the other core guys, but because their depth si crap since the post Cup purge.

The Canucks have put both the Hawks and Bruins into prolonged slumps after beating them. Chicago has lost 7 straight since losing to the Canucks and the Bruins went into a similar tailspin after the Canucks beat them in Beantown.

All you people do realize that the team Tallon constructed was well over the salary cap right? They had to break them up. No choice, unless those players wanted to graciously lop off their salaries, which wasn't about to happen. The only major mistake, in hindsight, I can say Bowman made is matching that offer to Hjalmarsson. That move cost the Hawks Niemi. And with that they may have been able to keep Campbell, who is sorely missed right now.

How does this theory apply to all the defensive teams that never accomplish anything?
