Brad Marchand slew-foots Derick Brassard; NHL discipline coming? (Video)

“It was a dangerous play and it was definitely a slew-foot. Those are dangerous plays and guys can get hurt like that. It’s something I shouldn’t have done and they penalized me for it and I’ll move on now.” 

Those were Brad Marchand’s words after the Boston Bruins forward was fined $2,500 in 2011 for slew-footing Matt Niskanen of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

We might be hearing something similar in the next few after Marchand slew-footed New York Rangers forward Derick Brassard during Boston’s 3-0 win Thursday night.

Marchand was not penalized on the play. Brassard remained in the game.

Afterward, Brassard was upset about the slew-foot and Rangers head coach called it “obvious.” Last season, Marchand called out Jeff Skinner, saying the Carolina Hurricanes forward “slew-foots all the time” after Patrice Bergeron was taken out.

Marchand hasn’t been punished since that incident in 2011, but he’s been warned for other infractions and has certainly been watched closely by the Department of Player Safety. Given that Ryan Garbutt was banned three games last month for a slew-foot, it might be a justified punishment if the Bruins forward was handed something similar.

UPDATE: Marchand will have a hearing with the DoPS on Friday afternoon.
