Tom Martinez, Tom Brady’s mentor, dead at 66

Brady and Martinez (Pro Football Talk)Tom Martinez, the coach who mentored New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack during dialysis. The man known as "The Quarterback Whisperer" was in need of a kidney transplant due to diabetes complications.

Martinez first came into Brady's life when the future MVP was just 13. He signed up for a quarterback clinic and then worked with Martinez for the rest of his career. Brady said he would never be the quarterback he is today without Martinez's help.

"He's a great friend of mine for a very long time and taught me how to throw a football at a very young age," Brady told ABC News in January. "He's been looking for a kidney for quite a while."

Brady used his platform in the Super Bowl to encourage organ donation.

People from around the NFL immediately reacted to Martinez's passing. Brady's teammate, Julian Edelman, tweeted, "RIP coach Tom Martinez. He was such a great mentor to many in the bay area. His legacy will always live on." Brady's father told CSN New England, "There are a lot of sad people in San Mateo County tonight."

Martinez's impact was felt beyond football. He coached football, women's basketball and softball at the College of San Mateo, where he won a combined 1,100 games. He was 66 years old.

We need adults to mentor children and it is nice to read a story about just such a man, especially in light of the horror stories we read every day about adults usig their position to victimiize children.

My Mom worked at the College of San Mateo and knew all the coaches and my brother wrestled (heavyweight) and played noseguard on the football team. It was a great environment and0Ttom Martinez was one of many great coaches and employees at CSM.

Some people are just plain heartless. They would probably laugh at their own mother's funeral.

I played for Tom Martinez and he was an interesting coach to say the least. I have never known any college coaches that were the head coaches of three different teams. Now believe me he treated the women's basketball team the same way as he treated men's football team. He would yell at us and call us names I didnt know coaches were allowed to say, but he would also come over give you a hug and tell a joke. With him you couldn't take it personal. He was just hyper and wanted to win. He was old school with a new school twist. He was a stickler for small details and those things made you better as a player. It could turn an average player into a good player and a good player into a great player. He will always be remembered

RIP. I'm on dialysis and need a transplant as well. The wait list is 7 years with my common blood type here in California. 20 years ago the wait was only 1 year. More need but nobody signs their donor card. Please sign your donor card. Don't take your organs with you, heaven knows we need them here =)

Thanks for all the great memories, Tom. You will be missed by those in the sports community. Your service to San Mateo and the surrounding communities has touched many lives. CSM was lucky to have you.

This goes out to any of you worthless pieces of garbage that gave a thumbs down for anyone who left a positive comment. You're trash and I bet mommy and daddy are real proud of you. A respected man loses his life to an illness and you idiots are slamming other people for being supportive. You need your sorry #$%$ kicked.

Sad to hear and see a Coach like this pass, the only comfort is that he no longer waits and suffers, and he can teach the young people in Heaven who never got to learn football. Being a coach in Heaven his his true reward. Coach RIP.
