Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams stabbed during robbery attempt

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that offensive tackle Mike Adams was stabbed during an attempted robbery outside his Pittsburgh residence early Saturday morning.

“We are aware of the situation regarding Mike Adams being stabbed earlier this morning," Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert said. "We are in direct communication with both Mike and his family. Mike is expected to make a full recovery."

Eric Metz, Adams' agent, tells Aditi Kinkhabwala of the NFL Network that Adams was confronted by three men looking to steal his truck. Adams was stabbed in the stomach during the robbery attempt, but luckily, no vital organs were affected. Metz adds that Adams will be out six-to-eight weeks, but is expected to be ready for training camp.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that one of the attackers dropped his cell phone, which was recovered by the police. That piece of evidence could help identify the genius who thought it was advisable to attempt to rob a 6-foot-7, 323-pound professional athlete.

Adams was selected by the Steelers in the second-round (No. 56 overall) of the 2012 NFL draft out of Ohio State. The 23-year-old had an injury-plagued rookie season, starting six of 10 games and playing right tackle on 45.74 percent of the Steelers' offensive snaps before an ankle injury landed him on injured reserve. The Steelers are counting on Adams being the long-term replacement for Max Starks at the left tackle position, but this latest setback will cost him valuable practice time. The Steelers have four more OTA dates and a three-day mini-camp remaining on their offseason schedule.

Metz expects Adams to overcome this latest obstacle.

"He's worked too hard to let a few morons screw it up for him," Metz said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
